Russell Mulcahy takes the Bait

Russell Mulcahy has recently made the nice looking Give 'em Hell Malone starring Thomas Jane. He also made Highlander and The Shadow amongst many other things.

Now, for his next film, Bait, he appears to have taken whole heap of high concepts and thrown into something that can only be described as a great big mess. Oh it will also be in 3-D.

In a sleepy coastal resort community, shoppers at an underground supermarket find themselves terrorized by a crazed bandit when the unimaginable occurs… A monstrous freak tsunami swallows the town. Now trapped inside a flooded supermarket with an armed maniac and rushing water threatening to entomb them all in a watery grave, the imprisoned band of survivors discover they’re not alone. The tsunami has brought some unwanted visitors from the depths. As the waters rise they must overcome not only the threat of drowning, but another threat, just as deadly and far more bloodthirsty… Packs of hungry tiger sharks.

You probably feel much the same way I do after that.

Give 'em Hell, Malone - Two new posters

The Moving Picture posted these two posters for Russell Mulcahy's Give 'em Hell Malone.

Looks like some poster designer has been reading their Sin City books. I personally feel these posters are a bit naff, but I am looking forward to seeing the film.

The film stars Thomas Jane as Malone along with Ving Rhames, Elsa Pataky, Leland Orser, French Stewart and Doug Hutchison

Ferris Bueller is Tyler Durden

I am a big fan of Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Fight Club. This blew my mind when I read it over on /Film. Big warning for spoilers if you haven't seen Fight Club.

Cool Papa Bell over on metatalk mentions the Ferris Bueller Fight Club Theory:

My favorite thought-piece about Ferris Bueller is the “Fight Club” theory, in which Ferris Bueller, the person, is just a figment of Cameron’s imagination, like Tyler Durden, and Sloane is the girl Cameron secretly loves.

One day while he’s lying sick in bed, Cameron lets “Ferris” steal his father’s car and take the day off, and as Cameron wanders around the city, all of his interactions with Ferris and Sloane, and all the impossible hijinks, are all just played out in his head. This is part of the reason why the “three” characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day — Cameron is alone, just imagining it all.

It isn’t until he destroys the front of the car in a fugue state does he finally get a grip and decide to confront his father, after which he imagines a final, impossible escape for Ferris and a storybook happy ending for Sloane (”He’s gonna marry me!”), the girl that Cameron knows he can never have.

Cameron: My father will see what I did. I can't hide this. He'll come home and he'll have to deal with me. I don't care I really don't. I'm just tired of being afraid.
Ferris: It's my fault. I'll take the heat for it. When he comes home, we'll tell him that I did it. He hates me anyway.
Cameron: No, I'll take it. I'll take it.
Ferris: No, you don't want this much heat.
Cameron: If I didn't want it, I wouldn't have let you take the car.
Ferris: I made you take that car.
Cameron: I could have stopped you.

Palinode goes further:

I realized that Cameron and Sloane seem to inhabit a different universe than Cameron and Ferris, or Ferris and Sloane. It's those two who are shyly and sweetly stumbling into a relationship, and "Ferris" is the thing between them. During the parade scene, for example, Ferris vanishes, leaving the two to have an understated and genuine conversation. Then Ferris erupts from a crowd of girls on a parade float, screaming out what Cameron cannot. He is the sausage king of Chicago, Cameron's frustrated adolescent libido made manifest in the form of a short dude with a vest.

It all fits. Oh my God! Going to have to watch Ferris again.

The many endings of Wolverine - Deadpool and Spoilers ahoy!

As you know the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film has a number of different endings after the end credits (check out my review). io9 have tracked them down and they are as follows.

Wolverine ending via Comic Book Movie - I don't know whether this is in fact true or not but in the cinema that I saw this film in after about 30 seconds of credits there was a scene with Stryker walking down a road and being stopped by several soldiers in regards to him killing a general earlier in the film. After the entire credits there is then the scene that I had previously heard about, of Wolverine sitting in a bar and speaking in Japanese saying that he is drinking to remember

Deadpool ending - The Slumz - Basically they zoom in on the rubble of the destroyed nuclear plant. We see Deadpools hand out of the rumble and then we see his head on the floor. We then see a guy in a long black over coat with his hood up, kneel down and pick up the head. We then hear dialogue as the camera pans around, " who the hell are you supposed to be?" and as it pans around we see its Wade Wilson. (Ryan Reynolds). then the screen fades to black. BTW its after the credits.

So Wade is alive and well... Weapon XI was a Wade Clone.... DEADPOOL lives.

This last description may not be totally correct though as Steve Zagar left this comment on the io9 post:
I work at a theater and just screened it. I got the Deadpool ending. No one in a black coat. The hand moves and we see that "Weapon XI's" head is sitting there and his mouth is now open and he says. "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
I saw the first ending and thought it was okay. Nice to see Logan in Japan. As for the Deadpool ending it sounds as if the studios realised that Deadpool is hugely popular and they had to dig themselves out of the ending they had originally made. Getting Ryan Reynolds in for re-shoots could well have been to set this up. Seems a bit odd that they'd introduce cloning technology here without any previous reference which makes it seem like a last minute add on.

If it is just Deadpool's head saying "shhh" then I assume they are saying his hyper healing facter has kicked in and he'll reattach his head and then Deadpool will kick off. I don't think he's ever had his head cut off in the comic book but he does take an awful lot of punishment so it is not that big a stretch and it would explain him getting the healing factor and his disfigurement without the whole cancer side of things being involved. Plus it would go a hell of a way to tip into total madness.

Which ending is your favourite? Which is the correct Deadpool ending? Have you heard of any more or is it just the two?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 2009 - Movie Review

Director: Gavin Hood
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Lynn Collins, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds, Dominic Monaghan, Daniel Henney, Kevin Durand, Taylor Kitsch
Running Time: 107 minutes
Score: 7 / 10

This review by the all powerful, all mighty, full of the awesome Live for Films...that's me.

Last night my Wife and I went to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I'm a long time comic book geek and have always enjoyed the adventures of Marvel's favourite mutant. We both enjoyed the X-Men films. I thought the second was the best and the third the weakest, but they never really capture Wolverine in his true berserker state that we have seen so many times in the comic.

How did Wolverine's solo film manage then? It does have its flaws (some pretty big flaws actually) but is a most enjoyable blockbuster film nonetheless. Apologies if this review skips around a bit, but that's how I roll and also how the film progresses.

As it started up we see a young boy ill in bed being tended by his father (the guy who played Shane in Neighbours) while another young lad with bad nails looks on. Bad things happen, claws pop and a howl to the skies puts the young Wolvie and Sabretooth on the run.

During the build up to the film I had been really excited seeing photos of Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber in character during the Civil War, the two World Wars and the Vietnam War. Schreiber is excellent as Sabretooth - menacing, psychotic and just plain nasty. You'll be pleased to know that his bounding lope type thing you see briefly in the trailer is a lot better and more convincing in the final film.

I thought they would spend a bit of time developing the relationship between the two feral mutants but instead there is a mad dash through the years during the Watchmen inspired opening credits. Seeing the extras and scale of these war scenes in photos and snippets shows that an awful lot of the budget went into these scenes but they are gone within the first few minutes, yet they have the most realistic feel compared to the rest of the film. Almost as if they blew the cash early on and then went "oops, we better reel it in a bit".

This leads to one of the main problems with the film. It all feels studio bound. Even with scenes that are outside it all feels like a set. Plus some dodgy green screen (the bits with Logan and Silver Fox in the van) and CG effects (the claws in the bathroom scene, and the de-aging of a character at the end) really pull you out of the movie. The recent leaking of the film onto the internet a few weeks ago was said to just be a workprint copy with unfinished effects. If that was the case they should have spent a little longer on them.

As with the dash through the years at the start of the film we are rushed through pretty much everything else. We never really get a chance to savour the moment and wallow in our comic book memories. The most time in one place is up in the Canadian Rockies where Logan spends his time with Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins).

After the credits Wolvie and Sabretooth are inducted into the Weapon X program by Stryker (Danny Huston - who uses the same speech pattern as Brian Cox which adds a nice bit of continuity), then we cut to them on a plane with Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), Bolt (Dominic Monaghan), Wraith (Will.i.am), Agent Zero (Daniel Henney), and Frederick J Dukes (Kevin Durand). Unlike the film I'll spend a bit more time talking about the pack of Mercs. There is some good banter between them and the mission we see gives them all a chance to shine. All are good although Agent Zero's actions, along with the later Gambit scenes, have some shoddy wire-work which again pulls you out of the film. Durand and Monaghan do a little but not a lot.

It is Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson who truly shines. He basically does the same schtick he did in Van Wilder and Blade Trinity, but he does it so well and it is ramped all the way up to 11 in this film. He is the best thing in the early scenes and it is a shame we only get to see him and, to a lesser extent, the rest for such a short amount of time. It would have been great to see them on a couple more missions to get a feel for them working as a team.

It is this rushing through the film that makes me feel the studio had more to say on the matter than the director, Gavin Hood. The whole film could have done with being another 20 or 30 minutes longer.

However, this is a Wolverine film and Hugh Jackman is great in the role. He's been doing it for a few years now so he is very comfortable in the skin of Logan. The weird thing is that he doesn't seem to have aged a day since he first appeared in X-Men back in 2000. Hugh is funny, scary, angry and confused at various points of the film and he acts his socks off. There are a few points in the film where you think he is going to pop a blood vessel as he is so worked up. The one fault with him though is that we once again, never really get to see him go fully berserk and become the scary beast he can be in the comic. I thought we would see this in his escape from the Weapon X compound, but he gets out of the tank (fully naked to the delight of my Wife) kills a couple of guards and is then out and away. I would have liked this to last a little longer and have us follow a few guards or something getting picked off from the shadows. The point I'm getting at is that they never really make Wolverine scary. I know that they are aiming for a younger market, but a few scenes to show just how scary it would be to face him or be to know he is hunting you would have been great.

Apart from Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool the other big name Mutant in the film is Gambit (Taylor Kitsch). He is okay, but I never really felt he was as cool as the character could sometimes be in the comic and some of the card effects were just not up to scratch. Just before he sits down with Gambit there is a pleasing nod to the comic book cliche of the heroes fighting first before teaming up and those kind of things really float my boat. There are a few others throughout the film - Holding a loved one while screaming "Noooooo!!!" to the heavens and calling people "Old Friend". If you are a long time comic book reader then you'll know what I am getting at and I felt they really added to the whole comic bookiness of the whole thing. I also liked the little nod to Superman with the Ma and Pa Kent types helping Logan.

The final showdown on the Island was good, although I kept saying "Where are all the guards" and it was nice to see lots of familiat Mutants as kids. The final showdown with Deadpool, Logan and Sabretooth doing his best impression of the Millenium Falcon at the end of A New Hope is pretty good, but very short. I still can't see how they will take the Deadpool from this film and marry it with the Deadpool from the comic if they decide to make a spin-off from the spin-off. I would have loved for the proper Deadpool to have been the one they were fighting with lots of chances for Ryan Reynolds to do his funny dialogue thing he does so well.

Reading back through this it does sound as if I did not like the film. It's not a Dark Knight or Iron Man, but I really did enjoy it. Like many of these kind of films you can pull them apart if you look too closely at it, but if you enjoy comic book movies then just sit back and let Hugh do his thing. Well worth seeing on the big screen. Don't forget to wait through all of the credits for the last little bit - I got the Japan ending (more news on the different endings here). I give it 7 out of 10 and my Wife would give it 8 as she said she would give Hugh Jackman one......Hold on a minute...

Have you seen the film? What did you think of it? What post end credit ending did you get?

The Random - Robin Hood, Spawn, Roger Rabbit, Red, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Shaolin Cowboy

- According to Filmstalker Tom Stoppard is rewriting the Robin Hood script that is currently being filmed by Ridley Scott, the script that Brian Helgeland had completed. It marks another rewrite of the script although the suggestion is that the rewrite is actually for Russell Crowe's dialogue which would make much more sense.

- Todd McFarlane tells IESB he has five offers on the table to do a new Spawn film. From big special effects studio budgets to a smaller indie budgets that he hopes to be able to write and direct himself. Which will he choose?

- "I'll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability—the digital tools, performance capture—I'm starting to think about Roger Rabbit," Zemeckis told MTV. Unfortunately, Zemeckis wouldn't say anything else - "I can't give you more details."

- Bruce Willis may star in Red. Willis would portray a former black-ops agent who has gone into retirement but is forced back into action when a high-tech assassin threatens him and his girlfriend. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing, and Erich and Jon Hoeber (Whiteout) are writing the screenplay, which is based on the WildStorm comic series. First Showing say the early word is that Richard Donner might direct.

- According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) will be making Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The film will look at what happened to the siblings 15 years after everything went down in the original story. They are now "specialized bounty hunters" who are on the hunt for bad things. The film will be made through Gary Sanchez Productions which is owned by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell. "The idea is, they've grown up and they hunt witches," McKay states. "It's a hybrid sort of old-timey feeling, yet there's pump-action shotguns. Modern technology but in an old style. We heard it and we were just like, 'That's a freakin' franchise! You could make three of those!'

First look at Amber Heard in The Rum Diary. It's carnival time.

From what I can gather this is our very first look at Amber Heard on the set of The Rum Diary in Puerto Rico. Like Megan Fox did recently, Amber's costume is hidden beneath a rather fetching dressing gown, but still she is on set.
According to my always excellent source, Pam (thanks for the pics Pam), the make believe plaza in Vega Baja is substituting for a carnival in St. Thomas which is a major part of the story. There are meant to be hundreds of extras but not clear how many they actually got. The film's budget is $45 million so Depp may be taking a big cut in front end pay to do this one. $18 million has been set aside for the Puerto Rico shoot.

Shooting concludes in Puerto Rico on or around 5th June.

The plot for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and it's already in pre-production?

Now if this is true then it's pretty cool, but still very early days and I can't find any official confirmation as yet. Therefore, file it under rumour.

According to Flickdirect Walt Disney Studios has announced that they are now in pre-production for Pirates of The Caribbean 4, and that preliminary casting is in progress. Filming is set to begin late summer/early fall 2009.

Filming Locations include Los Angeles, Florida, The Caribbean Islands, and Ireland. Returning cast includes Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffry Rush, along with newcomer Christopher Walker as Calico Jack Rackham.

The story is rumored to center around Captain Jack Sparrow's journey to a land unknown to mankind. Could it be Atlantis?

I must admit that I first read Christopher Walker as Christopher Walken which got me super excited, but then I spotted the n was actually an r. Thanks to Pam for sending me the info.

Joshua Breed a.k.a. Zombie Island

Early days for this but it sounds like a nice take on the whole reality TV thing after the brilliant Channel 4 series, Dead Set.

This is Reality TV taken to the next level. 7 players have 70 minutes to survive the most lethal Zombies ever created in the deadliest game show imaginable.

A cross between The Running Man and Battle Royale from the sound of it. I wonder what the most lethal Zombies ever created will look like.

The Special Effects team will be lead by Chris Fitzgerald who has previously worked on the model, creature designs and sculpture on all the Harry Potter event movies, as well as work as key sculptor on Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm. Director of Photography, Martin Mercer (War Of the Worlds; DareDevil) is working on concept cells and story boards. Phil Claydon is down to direct it.

Audrey's Door - Doorway to hell film seems familiar

Dimension Films has bought feature rights to Sarah Langan's yet-to-be published horror novel Audrey's Door in a preemptive purchase.

The story centers on a young architect who, after breaking off her engagement, finds the perfect Manhattan apartment. She begins to lose her grip on reality and finds herself battling the building's ghosts as well as the cultish tenants, forcing her to build a door that will connect to a nightmarish netherworld.

The book is due out in September according to Variety.

Sounds interesting, but the description does sound like a mish-mash of Rosemary's Baby, The Shining, 1408, The Gate, In the Mouth of Madness and a few others.

Soul Power - Trailer for epic Soul music documentary

In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The dream-child of Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with “The Rumble in the Jungle,” the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, previously chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary WHEN WE WERE KINGS.

SOUL POWER is a verité documentary about this legendary music festival (dubbed “Zaire ‘74”), and it depicts the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, among a host of others. At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers, these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots, as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience, to give the performances of their lives. The concert has achieved mythological significance as the definitive Africa(n)-American musical event of the 20th Century.

SOUL POWER is crafted from the extensive “outtakes” that remained after making WHEN WE WERE KINGS, which documented the epic title fight, but relegated the music festival to a small, supporting role. The “outtakes” have remained vaulted for the past 34 years, until now. Lensed primarily by celebrated cinematographers Albert Maysles, Paul Goldsmith, Kevin Keating and Roderick Young, SOUL POWER finally provides today’s audience the opportunity to experience this historic musical event in all of its magnificent, filmed glory.

Soul Power is due out on 10th July.

The Random - The Forgotten, Humpty Dumpty, Wall Street 2, McG vs Bay, Clash of the Titans, Gremlins 3, Flanimals, Star Trek,

- Producers John Wells and Don Murphy have optioned the rights to indie comic The Forgotten says The Hollywood Reporter. The comic centers on a man who, no matter what he does or whom he meets, is forgotten five minutes later. While it gives him great power and leeway as far as investigations and problem-solving, it leaves him incredibly alone. When the son of a long-lost friend is charged wrongly with murder, he uses his powers to get to the bottom of a conspiracy.

- Snakes on a Plane helmer David R. Ellis is in reports to direct the 3D sci-fi horror Humpty Dumpty reports Variety. The story follows a half-human, half-alien creature who embarks on a murderous rampage after his alien mother is abused by two rednecks in the Deep South. Billy Majestic penned the script and filming kicks off in September. Mark Ordesky is producing.

- Oliver Stone has officially signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to direct a sequel to the 1987 film Wall Street, according to Entertainment Weekly. Michael Douglas is also set to return as Gordon Gekko, a role which earned him an Academy Award. Shia LaBeouf is in talks to play a young wall street trader.

- The Michael Bay and McG fued escalates to schoolboy heights according to Men's Style. "Michael Bay has a big cock," McG says to Men's Style. "But I'd like to believe mine is bigger." McG smiles. "If he's up for it, we can both reveal ourselves on the Spartacus steps at Universal and put the question to rest."

- Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 21 Grams, The Aviator, Children of Men, The Number 23, and 30 Days of Night) is down to play Poseidon in Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans.

- Gremlins director Joe Dante tells Bloody Disgusting that while a third Gremlins movie or remake might happen someday, he won’t be involved.

- Universal Pictures’ Illumination Entertainment have announced that they are developing a 3D animated feature film based on the Ricky Gervais children’s book series Flanimals. Simpsons writer Matt Selman is working on the script based on the four volume series illustrated by Rob Steen. The books take readers to a “far, far away to a distant planet” inhabited by 50 species of “ugly and misshapen” creatures. Gervais will voice the lead character, a “pudgy, perspiring purple creature, goes on a mission to change the world.”

- J J Abrams explains to io9 why there is so much lens flare in his Star Trek reboot.

Gladiators vs Werewolves: Edge of Empire

From AV Pictures (Lesbian Vampire Killers) comes the next great genre mashup - Gladiators vs Werewolves. Sounds almost like a prequel to Dog Soldiers - funny as Neil Marshall is making the Roman themed Centurion.

Twitch had the synopsis.

AD 160. The Romans occupy Britain, and the great Hadrian’s Wall divides the land, built to keep back the northern warrior tribes, and something far more dangerous; a clan of savage wolf-like creatures which roam the lowlands.

Word reaches Governor Flavius that the Emperor has decreed that new, more fearsome beasts should be captured for the games. The ambitious Governor, having heard rumours of the fierce wolf-beasts beyond the great wall, senses an opportunity to win favour with the Emperor and even a place in the senate.

The heroic Centurian, Titus, is tasked with hunting and trapping the wolf-creatures. Titus and his legionaries track the beasts to their mountain lair and discover a warrior clan who transform at will into mighty, armour clad werewolves. In a fierce battle, the beasts slaughter half of the legionaries. Titus and his surviving men escape and ensnare the pursuing werewolves.

The Governor is delighted he has his prized new fighting savages, but Titus realizes that anyone bitten by a werewolf is cursed to become one of their kind. He warns the Governor that the werewolves pose a grave threat if they increase their numbers. Titus’s reward for challenging the Governor is to be stripped of his rank and thrown into the arena where the beasts’ savagery will be tested.

Excited spectators cram the amphitheatre. Titus and the land’s best gladiators are pitted against the ferocious werewolves, but the beasts are powerful and smart. For every two fighters they slay, they leave one wounded and alive. Titus’s fears are confirmed; the werewolves are building an army. The final day of the games will be a blood and thunder battle, more savage than any Roman has seen or experienced before.

Spiderbabies (Damnation Road) - Trio of hotness fight the Rapture

Quiet Earth dug up this sweet little poster for Spiderbabies.

The story is about a three girl punk rock band who get stuck in a small town in Texas after the rapture.

Craig Matthew Staggs and Christopher Sharpe co-wrote the script. It stars Sarah Rodgers, Adrienne Mishler, and Hilah Johnson. They say about the film "We're looking at the 18 to 35 year old, technologically savvy, pop culture-oriented audience.. it's definitely not Gone With the Wind with a lot of pensive looks and that sort of thing".

Sounds pretty cool in a Russ Meyer kind of way.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - New trailer has leaked onto the Web and we see Megatron is back

I don't know. I post the news that Frank Welker will be back doing the voice of Soundwave and now the new trailer has found its way onto the web.

Watch it quick before it gets pulled. It's a bootlegged copy so quality is as you would expect.

Shia starting college, Megan Fox in denim hotpants, plus it shows the Monastery in Petra that my Dad, brother and I wandered round and actually did some filming for a film I never made. We also get to see Megatron rising up from the depths. More of Devastator as he sucks up sand and Autobots and lots more.

What are your thoughts on the trailer?

Soundwave has his voice

Back in March I mentioned that Michael Bay wanted Frank Welker to voice Soundwave in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. This was exciting news as Welker voiced Soundwave in the original cartoon. Now UGO have the following piece of news from an interview with Roberto Orci.

Jordan Hoffman: Who’s voicing Soundwave in Transformers?
Roberto Orci: Welker.
Jordan Hoffman: That’s official?
Roberto Orci: I think so.
Jordan Hoffman: Uh oh.
Roberto Orci: Might be something I just told you for the first time, but I think so.
Jordan Hoffman: Good to know

That is pretty much, almost a definite then. Welker will join Peter Cullen who is forever more the voice of Optimus Prime.

All in all the next Transformers is shaping up rather well.

How do you like them apples?

Bale will be Batman again. Nolan may not.

We all know how good The Dark Knight was and how well it did at the box office. IT was the second film with Christian Bale as the Bat and Christopher Nolan as the puppet master. Since then there have been many rumours as to what actors and characters would be in the third film. Now some interesting news has come to light via Total Film. They spoke with star Christian Bale who talked about a The Dark Knight follow-up.
"Will we do a third movie? It's got to be the right story. You can't make something like The Dark Knight and then come out with something disappointing.

"I would like it if people say, 'You'll never make a good third movie.' I say, 'OK, let's make a third movie in that case, let's prove them wrong. But that's just me. The fact is, I have to! I've signed up! Chris doesn't. So I'm in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn't want to!"

Would you want to see a Batman film not directed by Christopher Nolan? If he didn't come back for the third film who would you want to see direct it?

Humpday - Poster

This supposedly went down very well at the Sundance film festival. It is a comedy directed by Lynn Shelton starring Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard.

Humpday tells the story of two straight college friends who reunite after years apart, fall back into their old habit of competing in increasingly outrageous dares in order to one-up each other, and, at the end of a wild night out, challenge themselves to have sex together in a gay porno for an art film contest.

Not one to watch with your parents then!

Cemetary Junction - Gervais and Merchant's new film

Principal photography commences on June 15th 2009 on Cemetery Junction, the first motion picture written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the multi-award winning team behind The Office and Extras.

With a cast including Ralph Fiennes and Ricky Gervais plus stars-of-the-future Christian Cooke, Felicity Jones, Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan, Cemetery Junction tells the funny, touching, universal story of being trapped in a small town and dreaming of escape.

In 1970s England, three blue-collar friends spend their days joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls.

Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to leave their working-class world but cool, charismatic Bruce (Tom Hughes) and lovable loser Snork (Jack Doolan) are happy with life the way it is.

When Freddie gets a new job as a door-to-door salesman and bumps into his old school sweetheart Julie (Felicity Jones), the gang are forced to make choices that will change their lives for ever.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant:

“ We want to capture the spirit of those classic British New Wave movies of the 1960s that made stars of Albert Finney, Julie Christie and Michael Caine. We are so excited about our fresh young cast – they are all film stars in waiting. Cemetery Junction is going to be glossy and glorious, full of humour, romance and drama as well as our usual observations on the truth and absurdity of real life. The fact that Ralph Fiennes is also on board to add depth and class to the whole thing is just unbelievable icing on the cake.”

Deborah Schindler, President of International Motion Picture Production at Sony Pictures added " We are delighted to be partnering with two of the UK's foremost writing and directing talents. Ricky and Stephen's past successes have proved not only their unparallelled understanding of comedy but also their ability to create realistic stories and characters with worldwide appeal. Add to this the exciting ensemble cast and we know we have a movie for all audiences."

Cemetery Junction will shoot on location in and around London, and will be based at Shepperton studios. The film is produced by Sue Baden-Powell and Charlie Hanson and executive producers are Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will be releasing Cemetery Junction in cinemas in 2010

Rififi, 1955 - Movie Review of the classis heist film

Director: Jules Dassin
Starring: Jean Servais, Carl Möhner, Robert Manuel, Janine Darcey, Pierre Grasset, Robert Hossein
Running Time: 122 minutes
Score: 9 / 10

This review by ackatsis

As evidenced by the recent success of 'Ocean's 11 (2001)' and its sequels, 'The Italian Job (2003)' and 'Inside Man (2006),' the heist movie is still as popular as ever. For decades, audiences have flocked to the cinema to enjoy the latest crime caper, a veritable goldmine for intrigue, suspense, betrayal and adrenaline-charged action sequences. However, it's always beneficial to consider the origins of a film movement, and, though it may not be the first example, Jules Dassin's 'Rififi (1955)' would undoubtedly influence ever cinematic heist flick that followed it. Employing, and perhaps pioneering, the three-act narrative format that proves commonplace for films of its sort – the preparation, the heist, the aftermath – 'Rififi' slowly and thoughtfully allows its plot to unfold, striving for realism over embellishment, and delicately laying down the cards for a tense and volatile climax. Interestingly, the authorities perform almost no function in the story at all, and so the manner in which the thieves' scheme unravels concerns only themselves and other desirous criminals, cementing the typical film-noir belief that the darker side of humanity – greed, lies, selfishness – will prove its own undoing.

By 1950, director Jules Dassin had already released a string of well-received American thrillers, before falling victim to the Hollywood blacklist. Considered un-backable by most European studios, Dassin languished in poverty for a period of five years, before he was offered the opportunity to direct a low-budget French thriller based on Auguste Le Breton's novel. 'Du rififi chez les hommes (1955)' {which loosely translates to "of brawling among men," a suitable description for the destructive male behaviour that devastates their well-laid plans} proved Dassin's redemption of sorts, becoming an incredible critical and commercial success and winning Best Director at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. Then-critic François Truffaut famously referred to Dassin's film as "the the best film noir I have ever seen," a lofty word of praise if there ever was one. Though the film differs from classic film noir in that the story unfolds in Paris, it contains sufficient elements of the movement to easily qualify. Indeed, Jean Servais' character, Tony le Stéphanois, might conceivably have been played by Humphrey Bogart – he may be a man past his prime, but he's proud, shrewd and decisive, and it'd be a mistake to get in his way.

'Rififi' takes a few minutes to fully swing into motion, and, though our introduction to the fellow team members is quite interesting, I found little importance in Tony's relationship with former girlfriend Mado (Marie Sabouret). It was possibly included to further flesh out his character, and to define the role of women in this particularly story, but I felt that Mado simply distracted from the caper that we were all here to see. However, the undisputed centrepiece of the film is undoubtedly the breathless 33-minute heist sequence, which is entirely devoid of all music and dialogue. The crime unfolds in almost complete silence, the thieves' quiet movements barely audible in the hushed atmosphere of the empty jewellry store. Every unexpected sound leaps out at the audience like a dagger, the single resonating note of a piano acting as the men's mortal enemy. Their ingenious heist unfolds like a meticulously-staged ballet {somewhat reminiscent of the extended pickpocketing sequence in Robert Bresson's 'Pickpocket (1959), every man completely and silently aware of his role in the operation. Following the successful jewel theft, composer Georges Auric is finally allowed to spread his musical wings, and Dassin begins to toy sadistically with the fates of his characters.

Guillermo Del Toro talks about The Strain

Author and acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro talks About Vampires, the inspiration for his forthcoming series of books, The Strain Trilogy.

The Strain

They have always been here. Vampires. In secret and in darkness. Waiting. Now their time has come.

In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country.

In two months—the world.

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing . . .

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city—a city that includes his wife and son — before it is too late.

Lonely Street - Trailer for a film starring Elvis and a character called Bubbha...haven't we heard this one before?

Nope, this isn't Bubba Ho-Tep. This is something a little different.

Bubba may not be Albuquerque's most successful private detective, operating from a seedy Motor Inn on Route 66 amid hookers and dope dealers, but when a man named J.G hires him as a bodyguard to protect a visiting celebrity from an overzealous fan, Bubba sees it as easy money. Easy until the celebrity seems to be the living Elvis - determined to keep a low profile - and the fan turns out to be a sleazy tabloid reporter - determined to break the story that the King is still alive. Bubba's predicament grows darker when the reporter winds up dead in a motel room, and Bubba becomes the number one suspect after the King and J.G. skip town.

Directed by Peter Ettinger.

Starring Ernie Hudson, Jay Mohr, Joe Mantegna and Robert Patrick

Hysterical Psycho - Trailer for new horror lampoon

The trailer for Hysterical Psycho which will premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Launching the "Moonlake Series Horror Stories," writer/director Dan Fogler (who acted in Balls of Fury and Fanboys) and NYC theater troupe Stage 13 create a hilarious horror lampoon of the stuck-in-a-cabin-with-the-phone-lines-cu t-and-the-car-battery-dead ilk. "Moon Lake has been a hotbed of evil activities for centuries," our droll, Hitchcockesque narrator tells us in an inventively animated preamble to the live-action splatterfest that's about to unfold. The site of some ancient, angry goings-down between the moon and the earth, rural Moon Lake now holds the strongest amount of insanity-inducing lunar radiation on the planet. When a New York theater troupe travels to those snowy woods to "find themselves," one by one, each member begins to get killed. But who is the killer among them? Did the lunar radiation turn one of the thespians into a crazy killer? And what's up with the groundskeeper and his deaf-mute sister?

Fogler is apparantly going to be portraying a young Alfred Hitchcock in Chase Palmer's Number Thirteen.

Hisss is directed by Jennifer Lynch (Surveillance) and is due to debut at the Cannes Film Festival. I posted some photos a while back for this, but now a trailer has hit the web.

He finds and captures the nagin’s mate for the magical powers of its nagmani, a mythical gem embedded in its hood. Ridley Scott is toying with an Alien prequel

IESB recently spoke to Fox Co-Chairman, Tom Rothman about a whole host of things.

Regarding a possible Alien prequel, "There's been some talk. Ridley Scott, Ridley is right now working on Robin Hood, but I think he's toying with the idea and that would be great for us. I mean, it's always been a matter of, really, if you can get the originator to do it that would be the greatest thing, so I've got my fingers crossed, all of them."

Interesting indeed. How cool would that be to have Scott back on the Alien universe. Would we finally get to find out some more about the Space Jockey and how his ship crashed.

He also talked about Robert Rodriguez' Predators (and the fact that he has been given total control of the franchise), Daredevil, Avatar at Comic Con, Fan Four and the new Wolverine film.

Check out the full interview over on IESB.

Do you want another Ridley Scott Alien film? What would you like to see in a prequel? Should there be a definitive origin to the Alien?
