John Carpenter's The Ward moving forward

Been a while since there has been any news on any of John Carpenter's new projects. There is nothing new about the prison one called Riot starring Nicholas Cage or the gangster film called The Prince.

However, there is some movement on his next film called The Ward (last mentioned back in February).

Carpenter has signed up Danielle Panabaker (Sky High, Friday the 13th) to star opposite Amber Heard (The Rum Diary).

It is a psychological horror thriller written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen (Long Distance). The story follows a girl (Heard) who is admitted to a psychiatric ward where she meets other girls there with distinct personalities and discovers a mysterious girl haunting the halls at night. Panabaker plays another patient in the institution, a snobbish girl who flirts with orderlies and faces electroshock therapy.

In addition to Panabaker, Taking Woodstock star Mamie Gummer has also joined the cast as a patient in the ward. Principal photography is scheduled to begin next month in Spokane, Washington.

John Carpenter is one of my favourite directors, but his last film, Ghosts of Mars, in 2001 was not so good. The Ward does sound like it could be back to the brilliant John Carpenter we all want to see again.

Happy Birthday Johnny Depp

A cool video of Depp celebrating his 46th birthday during the filming of The Rum Diary. Benjamin Velez shot it and said:
I filmed Johnny Depp´s surprise party from my house balcony, at Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, as he became my new front neighbor during more than 8 days, while his new movie "The Rum Diary" was being produced.

Depp's birthday presents...the red car used in the film and a guitar sitting in the front seat. From 9 pm to 4am the cast and crew celebrated his birthday at the Parrot Club. Cepp brought his own bottle of wine.

Happy Birthday Mr Depp. I would have loved to have been there. Thanks to Pam for sending me the link.

Photos of Depp, Nolasco, Eckhart and Heard on the set of The Rum Diary

The Rum Diary is slated to finish shooting on June 9. Yes, Johnny Depp will have to work through his birthday to make up for rain delays. Pam sent me these photos of Depp, Amaury Nolasco, Aaron Eckhart and Amber Heard on the set. I can't wait to see some footage from this film.

The Rum Diary - Johnny Depp in Neguabo, Puerto Rico

It has been a while since there has been anything new on The Rum Diary film. Now Pam has sent me these two photos. Both were shot in Naguabo, Puerto Rico on 25th May.

According to local reports Depp was supposed to have attended the Cannes Film Festival, but had to cancel due to rain causing delays during shooting.

Location shooting for the adaption if Hunter S Thompson's The Rum Diary will end as expected around 5th June.

Puerto Rico through the bloodshot eyes of Hunter S. Thompson

As I've mentioned a few times, Johnny Depp is currently in Puerto Rico filming The Rum Diary. It is based on the book by Hunter S. Thompson, as was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Now Pam sent me this link (Thanks Pam). An editor of Media Bistro's Galley Cat book blog reread The Rum Diary, written very early in Thompson's career, and put together this video tour retracing the gonzo journalist's life on the island nation.

Is Depp using a box or not?

While filming The Rum Diary Johnny Depp had to do this scene in a little car. For some reason he had to sit on the knee of the other actor with him. However, in these first two photos he is sat on a box.
In the photos below the box is gone and he is sat on the actor's knee. Looks like Depp uses a box to rehearse. Not really movie magic but a nice little glimpse into the making of the film. Thanks to Pam for sending me the pics.

Is Patti Smith in The Rum Diary?

Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer–songwriter, poet and visual artist who was a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses. Called the "Godmother of Punk", she integrated the beat poetry performance style with three-chord rock.

That is her in the picture above.

Pam sent me the picture below of Johnny Depp in Puerto Rico filming The Rum Diary. She told me to look closely at the person to the left of the photo.

It sure does look like Patti Smith doesn't it. I've not heard of her starring in the film and it is more than likely just someone who looks like her, but it is an uncanny similarity.

The same person is in this photo between Jerry Judge and Johnny Depp.

I open it up to you. Do you think it is Patti Smith behind Johnny Depp?

First look at Amber Heard in The Rum Diary. It's carnival time.

From what I can gather this is our very first look at Amber Heard on the set of The Rum Diary in Puerto Rico. Like Megan Fox did recently, Amber's costume is hidden beneath a rather fetching dressing gown, but still she is on set.
According to my always excellent source, Pam (thanks for the pics Pam), the make believe plaza in Vega Baja is substituting for a carnival in St. Thomas which is a major part of the story. There are meant to be hundreds of extras but not clear how many they actually got. The film's budget is $45 million so Depp may be taking a big cut in front end pay to do this one. $18 million has been set aside for the Puerto Rico shoot.

Shooting concludes in Puerto Rico on or around 5th June.

A tired looking Depp talking to the press for The Rum Diary

Here are a few photos of Johnny Depp during a meet and greet with the press for The Rum Diary. The white haired bloke is is long time assistant, Jerry Judge.

The life of an actor is not always the fun and cool time that we often see.

Thanks to Pam for sending me the pics.

Armored - Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, and Laurence Fishburne have a plan to make some money

A crew of officers at an armored transport security firm risk their lives when they embark on the ultimate heist….against their own company. Armed with a seemingly fool-proof plan, the men plan on making off with a fortune with harm to none. But when an unexpected witness interferes, the plan quickly unravels and all bets are off.

Starring Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, Laurence Fishburne, Amaury Nolasco (who is currently filming The Rum Diary with Johnny Depp in Puerto Rico), Fred Ward, Skeet Ulrich, Columbus Short (who is down to star in the adaption of The Losers) and Milo Ventimiglia it certainly has got some big name action stars in there.

Always good to see Fred Ward. I loved him in Tremors and Remo: Unarmed and Dangerous (Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins if you live in the USA).

Armored (keep wanting to type Armoured) is directed by Nimród Antal who, not only sharing a name with a mutant killing robot from the X-Men comics, also made Vacancy.
Collider had the poster and photos and Trailer Addict had the trailer. Watching it this looks like it will be of the old school variety and there's nothing wrong with a bit of old school action now and again.

Hunter S Thompson and Johnny Depp back in the day

As you all know Johnny Depp is filming an adaption of Hunter S Thompson's The Rum Diary.

Depp also starred in the excellent adaption of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that Terry Gilliam directed.

Pam sent me these great photos of Depp and the father of Gonzo journalism at a signing during the time of the film's release. Great photos.
