Captain Jack as Captain America

The Avengers film draws ever closer and we have our Iron Man, Thor, Nick Fury, and a few others. However, there is still no news on who will play Captain America.

Worryingly Will Smith's name keeps getting bandied about. Don't get me wrong, I like a bit of Big Willy stylee (hmm a dodgy sentence if ever there was one!) but they should stick with the Steve Rogers set out in the comic. However, another actor, who would agree with the sentiments of my previous sentence but in a whole different way, has said they'd like to give it a go.

During the BBC "Torchwood: Children of Earth" mini-series panel at Comic-Con last weekend, actor John Barrowman revealed that he would like the chance play Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers films.

"You know what I want to play? Captain America," he said to the wildly receptive crowd, before adding that it "so won't happen."

Barrowman plays the fixed point in time, Captain Jack Harkness and is pretty good at it.

The question is would he make a good Cap? To be honest I think he would. He's got the looks (my wife and mother love him as do many other men and women), he's a bit of an unknown for the mainstream audience (only fans of TV sci-fi, musical theatre and 1980's Saturday Morning Kids TV would know him) which would make them buy into him as the character rather than as a big name playing a part. Although Kevin Feige has said they are looking for a star with international appeal.

Of course, there would be none of the shenanigans that Captain Jack gets up to if he took on the role of Steve Rogers.

I seriously doubt that this will come to pass or that he will even make it to an audition, just one of those things that the Comic Con throws up once in a while. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are people working away on making vids and pics of Barrowman as Captain America right now.

The Avengers and Captain America - Could the Skrulls and The Invaders feature in them?

Some interesting facts have been hinted at by Kevin Feige, over on CHUD, regarding various things that may feature in their forthcoming Marvel films.

'Will the Skrulls be the villain in The Avengers?' I asked.

Feige gave me one of those looks he's good at giving and just said, 'We do own them.'

More digging turned up the fact that Marvel Studios owns the Skrull race, while Fox own the Super Skrull.

The Skrull are a shape changing alien race who have had a hard-on for Earth for quite some time. They would make a pretty great big bad for the film for a number of reasons: first of all, there's a bunch of them, so the film wouldn't have to contain just one or two fight scenes with the main threat, and each of the team members could have their own battles at their own power level. For another, they allow Marvel Studios to do something really cool - what if it's revealed that certain characters from the previous Marvel movies have been Skrulls all along? And Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch proved in the first Ultimates series that the Skrull (called the Chitauri there) make a convincingly cinematic threat.

Of course the other possibility is that The Avengers will battle Hydra. As I mentioned in this story about The Invaders possibly appearing in The First Avenger: Captain America, Feige name-dropped Hydra as being something with which Steve Rogers had to contend. Might the truth be that Steve Rogers would just meet some of the Nazi supervillains who go on to head Hydra? And with The Avengers being a SHIELD group in the movies, it might make sense to make the villain a SHIELD villain. On top of that, like the Skrull, the sheer number of Hydra agents mean the film could contain lots of battles and that each of the Avengers could get something to do during the course of the film.

Having the Skrulls in the Avengers films throws up some interesting possibilities - the Hulk may feature but turn out to be a Skrull, other characters in Iron Man, Thor etc may turn out to have been replaced by Skrulls at some point.

The Hobbit - Who will be Bilbo? Dr Who, Harry Potter or Mr Tumnus?

Rumour has it that the name of the lead star in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit will be announced next week at Comic-Con International.

Names recently mentioned in the running are David Tennant (Dr Who), Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and James McAvoy (Wanted, The Last King of Scotland). Sadly Ian Holm who played Bilbo in The Lord of The Rings is not in the running.

I don't really see any of the trio being Bilbo, they're all a little skinny and heading down the Elijah Wood as Frodo look.

However, if I had to pick I would like to see Tennant. To go from the Doctor to The Hobbit would be amazing.

This also seems like it could be the most likely if you look at what is happening at this years Comic Con.

David Tennant is making his very first trip to the San Diego expo to promote Doctor Who, a television series that he will soon be leaving behind. Peter Jackson, the producer of the two-film "Hobbit" series due out in 2011 is also meant to be appearing at the Comic Con. Coincedence?

UPDATED: De Niro & Seagal may be fighting Machete!

We are all looking forward to the feature length version of Robert Rodriguez's Machete.

Danny Trejo is back in the title role and he's out for revenge.

Now Bloody Disgusting have some interesting rumours on other cast members:

• Michelle Rodriguez will play a character named Luz.
• Jonah Hill will play Julio.
• Robert De Niro will play Senator McLaughlin.

That's right. De Niro! If he is on a good day when he films this then it should be amazing. Plus he will have to have a big smackdown with Trejo.

Still just a rumour, but a very good one.

UPDATE: The Playlist have the news that Steven Seagal will almost definitely be starring in the film. Sounding like another Expendables!

An American Werewolf in London - Can you say remake? No doubt we'll see it next Wednesday!

John Landis' classic comedy horror was one of the first film that gave me nightmares as a kid. The bit in the dream when the Nazi Werewolves kick the door in and shoot the family did it for me. A bit older and with repear viewings made me realise just how good it was.

The bit on the London tube is one of the spookiest, suspenseful scenes in an movie and the actual transformation scenes is one of the greatest physical effects ever.

Now comes a rumour which could lead to the greatness of the movie to be diminshed.

John Landis has sold the remake rights for An American Werewolf In London to Dimension Films according to a tipster over at Bloody Disgusting.

Of course even if this is true it doesn't necessarily mean that we will see a remake, but the chances are we will soon be seeing a crappy CGI wolf running around London cracking wise and looking at the camera with a wink while chewing on a bloody corpse.

Could Tyrese Gibson be in the Captain America film?

Busy promoting Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and his new comic book, Mayhem, Tyrese Gibson mentioned a few interesting things.

“The energy from Comic-Con really did something to me,” Gibson told MTV News of what prompted him to try his hand at comics. “Instead of me sitting back and waiting on ‘Luke Cage’ to finally happen — which I’m still looking forward to doing once they get the script together — and instead of me waiting on ‘Captain America,’ which they were talking about me for, I’m going to create my own. And that’s what I did.”

Now what could Tyrese be in talks about Captain America for? There was the rumour that Will Smith could be playing Steve Rogers, but nothing more has been said. Smith as the First Avenger is a bit of a stretch, but he would bring in a wide audience (I don't think it will happen though), however Gibson as Cap would never work. He's just not that big a name to pull in the punters.

There are a couple of characters that spring to mind for Tyrese.

First there is the role of Sam Wilson aka The Falcon. Sam debuted nearly three years before Luke Cage so is one of the first African American characters (Black Panther is from Africa).

The Falcon, as the name suggests, had the ability to fly via a high tech winged suits. He was also a top spy kind of character and had many an adventure with Steve Rogers.

Maybe Tyrese is in talks to play Sam, maybe not. As The First Avenger film is supposedly going to be set for the most part in World War II then it seems unlikely that The Falcon will feature in the film. However, he is a cool character and it would be great to see him on screen.

The other, more likely, option is Isaiah Bradley who featured in the Truth: Red, White & Black mini series.

Project: Rebirth began as a collaboration between US, British and German eugenicists led by Dr. "Josef Reinstein" (real name Dr. Wilfred Nagel), and Dr. Koch. When WW II began, Koch took over the German program and Josef Reinstein took over the American program. Each was attempting to recreate the super soldier serum which had previously turned Steve Rogers into Captain America a year prior to Pearl Harbor. Reinstein's early attempts to refine the formula were tested on African-Americans. Three hundred of these soldiers were taken from Camp Cathcart and subjected to potentially fatal experiments at an undisclosed location in an attempt to re-create the Super Soldier formula, as seen in Truth: Red, White & Black. Only five subjects survived the original trials. In the name of secrecy, US soldiers executed the camp's commander and hundreds of black soldiers left behind at Camp Cathcart. The government told the families of the three hundred subjects that their loved ones had died in battle.

The sole survivor of his test group, Bradley stole a spare costume intended for Captain America before he engaged in a suicide mission to destroy the Super-Soldier efforts of the Nazis at the Schwarzebitte concentration camp. There, he was also able to assassinate Koch. The mission ended when the Germans captured Bradley. Nazi interest in the American supersoldier was high; he was even brought before the Führer himself. Bradley was later rescued, only to be court-martialed and imprisoned at Leavenworth around 1943. In 1960, Bradley was pardoned by President Eisenhower and released.

This is all supposition on my part based on the few words mentioned by Tyrese. Isaiah Bradley seems the role most suited for the film.

UPDATED: Could we be seeing the new Doctor Who sooner than we think?

The Daily Mirror is claiming that Matt Smith and the first ten Doctors will all appear in a special 15-minute episode filmed for the BBC's Children In Need charity night. The episode will air in November, and the first three Doctors, the late William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, will be represented by footage from their old stories. A BBC source supposedly tells the Mirror:

This is a momentous episode for all Doctor Who fans. Never before have all the Doctors been in the same room, let alone in the same show. It's been a logistical nightmare getting all the actors together and available for shooting on the same days. But the script has already been started and it's classic Doctor Who – really witty and very sharp. Viewers will see the Time Lords regenerating and emerging one by one from the Tardis, each with their own quirky opening line. David Tennant is the central character in the episode. He's trying to hunt down some special time travel apparatus. What he's actually lost has not yet been decided, but the idea is for all the other Doctors to club together to help David find it. The actors who are no longer with us, William, Jon and Patrick, will make special cameo appearances, with footage from original shows being flashed up on screen. It's a really exciting project – and all for a good cause.

Wonder Woman - Could she be one of the Seekers

Wonder Woman is a film that has been in development hell for a long time now. Various writers and directors, including fan favourite Joss Whedon have been attached to guide DC Comics Amazon Princess to the big screen. However no one is currently at the helm.

More interest is on who will actually play Diana and fill her rather small costume. Many names have been rumoured from Beyonce to Jessica Biel. Megan Fox was recently asked about it and she said she had no interest in the role.

Now a new name has entered the internet debate and that is of Bridget Regan. She is one of the stars in Legend of the Seeker and her fans have put together an online petition to let the people in charge know she is right for the part.

“We feel that [Bridget Regan] has all the right qualities to give justice to the character of Wonder Woman,” reads the online petition located at PetitionSpot. “All we are asking is to at least give Bridget Regan a screen test to see if she fits the necessary requirements to fulfill the role of Wonder Woman.”

The statement, addressed to Warner Brothers, DC Comics, and Disney ABC currently has just over a hundred signatures from Regan’s supporters, urging anyone in charge of the project to give her a screen test.

I've not seen Bridget in action, but she certainly looks the part. As there is no director casting is still a long way away so this is one of those early rumours that usually end up as dead as a doornail.

Michael Sheen as Blofeld? Throw me a frickkin' bone here

Last week a press release went round saying that James Bond 23 had a new screenwriter in Peter Morgan.

According to The Guardian, actor Michael Sheen is in negotiations to portray the villain in Bond 23.

Sheen would portray Ernst Stavro Blofeld, a Bond villain who has appeared in six previous Bond films and he's been portrayed by actors such as Donald Pleasance, Telly Sevales, Charles Grey and the villain was also the inspiration for Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers film series.

Sheen has previously worked with the new Bond 23 writer Peter Morgan in several films, including The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, last year's Best Picture nominee Frost/Nixon and The Damned United. Plus he was a werewolf in the Underworld films so he does have a bit of a range.

Now as a scriptwriter has only been announced I seriously doubt that they have got as far as casting. However, Sheen is a top actor (although I always see a bit of Tony Blair in him) and would be good at grounding the Blofeld character in the slightly more realistic Bond Universe that has been shown in the Daniel Craig era.

I still think they should set up the Bond name as an ID given to all 007 agents which would make it so much easier for all future updates to the franchise and they could do the same with Blofeld. Have the name given to all leaders of SPECTRE.

Is Michael Bassett in the running to direct Predators?

Last week I mentioned the fact that Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, Descent) was one of several directors in the running to direct the Robert Rodriguez produced Predators.

Now it looks as if we may have one of the other directors in the running. Michael Bassett (Solomon Kane) talks about his recent trip to LA to discuss one thing. Reading between the lines I am pretty sure he is talking about Predators.

I had a specific reason for going so it was all pretty focused on that one thing. There are several directors being met and considered so I can’t/won’t be specific about what this is. I’m also pretty sure I’m not at the top of anyone’s list for this gig, though god knows I pitched my little heart out for it. I met with the producer (even though arranging the meeting was like trying to juggle mercury) at the very swanky Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills and spent a pleasurable few hours chatting about his work and achievements as well as this project. He’s a director as well and it was really interesting listening to some of his war-stories. He’s not much older than I am but has been far more productive in his time and I was pretty blown away by that sheer heads-down determination and work ethic he’s got. Makes me feel like a lazy underachiever in comparison. Though he’d seen Solomon Kane and really liked it, the film of mine that he dug most was WILDERNESS. He responded to the strong performances of the young cast and sheer ferocity of the kills which I think plays to elements of this project.

Then I met with the executives at the studio that’s financing. Once again, a great meeting with a huge amount of positive energy and enthusiasm from me and them. I came away thinking that – whoever gets the gig – they’re going to have a really passionate team behind them.

Anyway, back home now and awaiting feedback from this trip. It’s a long shot but the game’s not over just yet. I think I know who’s most likely to get the job out of the other names I’ve heard and if I’m right, then we’ll all get a great movie and if it’s me, we’ll then, we’ll get an even better one

Maybe he is talking about Neil Marshall in that last paragraph or mayber somebody else.

In a previous post on his excellent blog he talks about dream projects (Half-Life, Outland and more) and mentions the Alien films.

Alien is the reason I became a film maker. I don’t care about Ripley (edit – just to qualify this comment; Fincher finished her story in Alien3 and bringing her back felt like a diservice to her character in Alien4.) I want to know about the Aliens; their world, the ecosystem or intelligence that created them. Imagine if the Alien in its home world was nothing more than a wasp or ant? What kind of planet would that be? I’d rather Ridley Scott or James Cameron did it but if they won’t I’ll happily take a swing. Anything has to be better than the Alien movies we’ve been served up so far. (And this is coming from a guy who went to New York to see the opening of Alien3 in Times Square. I’ve long since forgiven Fincher who is clearly a genius but boy, it stung at the time. In fact you can kinda see what he was trying to do if you look at the extended cut. Still bad but now at least a really noble failure.) I hear now that the Ridley is producing a prequel with his favourite new Wunderkind director protege. Maybe we’ll finally find out what the hell the ’space jockey’ was all about. Wish it was me doing it though…

He definitley has the right mindset and geek credentials to make a new Predator film that we all want to see. Right, I'm off to see if I can get an interview with him.

Angelina Jolie talks Wanted 2

Recently Timur Bekmambetov was talking about making Wanted 2 and how he would like Angelina Jolie to return. Spoilers ahead.

For those of you who know, Jolie's character bends a bullet at the end of the film that takes down all the bad guys including herself. The film, and the Mark Millar comic it was based on, was full of mad concepts and included a place where the characters where healed in super quick time. However, there was no mention of characters being brought back from the dead.
The comic did feature lots of parallel dimensions though so it could possibly bring back characters that way, but that still doesn't fit into the film version.

However, they could probably fit something into the universe they set up to do this and if that was the case could also mean a possible return for the other characters who died in the first one.

Now MTV have an interview with Jolie that seems to indicate in no uncertain terms that her character isn’t likely to return for a sequel, but that could just be movie talk while deals and money is being discussed.

Back in November 2008, MTV spoke to Jolie and she discussed her final scene in the film.

“In the original, she doesn’t kill herself,” said Jolie. “I actually changed the ending. I said, ‘If she was to find out she had killed people unjustly and was a part of something that wasn’t fair, then she should take her own life.’”

That means it was Jolie who wanted the character to die due to what she had done.

Shia talks Indiana Jones 5

While chatting to the BBC about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Shia LaBeouf mentioned news about a certain archaeologist.

"Steven [Spielberg] just said that he cracked a story on it before I left and I think they're gearing that up."

That is pretty much all he says apart from that fact that there are "definitely no special effects in that movie."

I think the last part is in reference to the fact that the Transformers film is chock full of CGI (rather like the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

This is what you call early days, but it does look as if they are kicking around the idea of a 5th Indiana Jones film. It is sad that this news doesn't thrill me as much as it should do. The most recent film was such a disappointment.

If they do make another I hope the story is great, they cut out silly CGI and actually let Indy solve the mystery instead of some gibbering idiot.

Derek Mears talks about Predators

Derek Mears, the guy who played Jason in the Friday the 13th reboot has apprantly been rumoured to have something to do with Robert Rodriguez's Predators.

This video below from MovieWeb shows that it was news to Derek, but he does seem excited at the prospect.

He's got the build and the speed to make a pretty good Predator, but again, it is very early days on the project and I doubt they've got into the casting yet.

Jaime King to play Brigitte Bardot

Cinema Blend have come across an interview in the Australian magazine InPress with Fanboys director Kyle Newman. In it he reveals that he’s working on a Brigitte Bardot biopic.

Newman says that though the project is currently in development, he’s already found his star: his wife Jaime King, who met Newman on Fanboys and married him soon after.

King was last seen in My Bloody Valentine and The Spirit.

I'm not sure whether it will be dealing with just Bardot's early life or whether it will include the later years when she became a recluse fighting for animal rights.

Still early days on this one but how do you feel about Jaime King playing Bardot? Does she have the acting chops for it?

Megan Fox as Buffy - Dwayne Johnson as Commando

Cinefools has reported on a couple of rumours.

The first is that Megan Fox is being considered for the title role in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot that I mentioned a while back.

At the time of that news stories I sent Megan a quick Tweet asking if she was interested in playing the part and her response was in the negative.

Going with that and the fact it is still early days in this Buffy stories I would say that there is not much truth in the rumour.

Who else would you like to see as a new Buffy?

The second rumour is to do with the Commando remake. Cinefool's source says that Dwayne Johnson (Doom, Race to Witch Mountain) is the favourite to play the lead in the film that is in early development.

Not a bad choice for the role in my opinion but the plot of Commando was recently updated in the excellent Taken starring Liam Neeson.

Ice Age 4 - Who knew?

The third Ice Age film isn't even out yet, but AICN have this snippet of info about a possible fourth film. Just a rumour at the moment, but I like the fact that it is changing the franchise. I enjoyed the first one but the second did nothing for me.

I haven't seen this reported anywhere, so hopefully this is of some interest.

Even though Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs hasn't even hit theaters yet, it seems a fourth Ice Age film has been well underway or the past few months. [SOURCE'S CONNECTION TO PROJECT DELETED BY AICN] friend of mine says the 4th installment sees Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie and Scrat frozen solid and accidentally defrosted in a museum in present day.

At this stage the film is being called "Ice Age Th4w". Guess that sees the end of any future Ice Age movies being set in prehistoric times but this could be an interesting new direction for the franchise.

This idea also mirrors recent events where a perfectly preserved (Frozen) baby woolly mammoth was discovered on a Siberian riverbank earlier this year.

Spider-Man 4 producer talks villains

Todd Black the producer of Spider-Man 4 has been speaking to the New York Post. He has confirmed a few things:

Kirsten Dunst is definitely set to return, contrary to early rumors that she might be replaced (I personally wish the character was changed from the whiney one from the last couple of films).

There will be no wedding between Peter and Mary Jane.

Morbius the living vampire is not a villain in the film.

However, he goes on to give a few clues as to who it could be."We're just coming up with who the villain's going to be now. We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York." He also adds that "the villain will be one of Spidey's foes from the comic, not a character invented for the film."

That doesn't really narrow it down as Spider-Man is set in New York, and most of his villains are from there as well. Add in the fact the comic has been going for so many years then there are many to choose from. Plus it may not be a big name villain, maybe a lesser one who has been beefed up. The weird thing is the fact he says "it'll be a big part of New York."

Some sites have mentioned Kraven the Hunter but as he's not from New York that goes against what Black has said. The Kingpin is definitely a NY boy so he is a strong possibility, but as he was in the Daredevil film there may be some rights issues with that. Mind you he is big so maybe Black was being cryptic with his clues.

Another choice is the Lizard who is Parker's mutated teacher. Dr Conner has been shown in previous films (he is the man with one arm and his research on lizard's regeneration abilities causes his change) and there are urban legends of lizards and alligators in the NY sewers.

Then of course there is J. Jonah Jameson who, in the comics and animated series financed the creation of Scorpion and set the Spider-Slayer robots on Spider-Man.

Other villains from NYC (as far as I am aware so apologies if I get any wrong) are Electro, Hobgoblin, Hammerhead, Molten Man, Jackel, and the Vulture.

Rhino and the Chameleon were both originally from Russia. Mysterio would be cool but I think he was originally from California.

I personally feel it will either be the Lizard or the Vulture, but we shall have to wait and see.

It is a pity that Morbius won't be in it, even though Sam Raimi gave a strong hint that it could be. Maybe Black is giving us some Michael Bay misdirection?

Could Terminator 5 be set in London?

The usually very reliable Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Cool had this little nugget of information.

I hear from industry sources that yet-to-be-named Terminator 5, the sequel to Terminator: Salvation, will be set in London in the year 2011, with a time-travelling John Connor (Christian Bale).

Not sure if this could be true or not. Very early days although back in April, Film Journal ran an interview with McG on his plans for a follow up to Terminator Salvation:

I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a 2011. John Connor is going to travel back in time and he’s going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They’ve figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you’re going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome.

I think setting it in the UK will mix up the franchise a bit in a good way, and I wonder if it is anything to do with Bale wanting to shoot it back in his home country. Still as I've said this is very much a rumour, but it could lead to some pretty cool visuals. Now what would Skynet want with London?

Anna Paquin would love to be in X-Men: First Class

IGN UK recently spoke with Anna Paquin, who revealed she would like to return as the mutant Rogue for X-Men: First Class.

"Absolutely. Yeah," she told us. "I would hope I could do a little bit more action next time, though. I kind of find it ironic that I did three big action films and did, actually, no action whatsoever. I mean I got some really amazing emotional story moments, but I didn't really get to do the physical stuff."

It was said that the film, which is currently being written by The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz, would feature younger mutant characters like her Rogue along with Colossus, Angel, Jubilee and Shadowcat.

I am still not sure about this whole First Class thing. One minure they say it will feature the younger version of Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey etc and then it's turned around to this new crowd of mutants who turned up late on in the comic book world. Surely if it is First Class then it should be Xavier's first class of mutants? Am I silly for thinking that?

Gordon's Alive? Brian Blessed may play Odin in Thor

I am really looking forward to Kenneth Branagh's adaption of Marvel's Thor. Now this news has got me even more excited.

Rich Johnston over on Bleeding Cool had this to say:

I understand that British actor Brian Blessed has been cast in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR movie, based on the Marvel Comics title, as the character Odin.

Blessed is best known for his roles as Caesar Augustus in I CLAUDIUS and King Of The Hawk Men in FLASH GORDON as well as being a charity campaigner and mountaineer.

He has appeared in a number of Kenneth Branagh productions, including HAMLET and AS YOU LIKE IT, famed for his booming voice.

I still haven't found any official confirmation on this, however he apparantly confirmed it at a recent public appearance in York. I will keep looking for official confirmation on this, so at the moment count it as a rumour.
The fact that Branagh as previously worked makes even more sense as he has also worked with Tom Hiddleston who was recently cast as Loki. Chris Hemsworth is Thor. Now we just need to find out what characters Natalie Portman and Josh Hartnett are playing.

I personally think this is a brilliant piece of casting and hopefully it is true.
