Fantastic Mr Fox - Trailer

The stop-motion film, marking Anderson's first foray into animation, is an adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's story, centering on a clever fox who must outwit three mean, dimwitted farmers who try their hardest to hurt Mr. Fox and his family. George Clooney will voice Mr. Fox, while Cate Blanchett voices his wife.

Out on 13th November.

The Secret of NIMH gets another go

Paramount is developing a feature version of the award-winning children's tale Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) is in talks to write the screenplay, and former Walden exec Cary Granat is on board to produce.

This film would be the second theatrical go-round for the book, which MGM brought to the screen in 1982 as the animated The Secret of NIMH, directed by Don Bluth.

Robert C. O'Brien's "Rats of NIMH" won the Newbery Medal in 1972 and has been a staple in children's bookstores and libraries since. The story centers on a mouse -- the titular Mrs. Frisby, re-named Mrs. Brisby in the MGM movie -- faced with a crisis when her son falls ill and she must move her family to escape a farmer's plow.

Mrs. Frisby enlists a group of former lab rats, whom she soon discovers run a highly evolved society, who possess advanced technologies and divide labor in the manner of a human community.

It's likely the new "NIMH" would combine live-action and animation in the manner of Alvin and the Chipmunks and other kiddie hybrids, but should hopefully be a little better!

An extended 4 min clip for 9. 9 (Elijah Wood) and 5 (John C. Reilly) come to rescue 2 (Martin Landau) and as they are under attack 7 (Jennifer Connelly) comes back to the rescue. 9 (Elijah Wood) then makes a mistake and activates a machine which sucks in 2 (Martin Landau).

The Goon - Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti voicing The Goon and Frankie?

Some more Comic Con news. This time about Eric Powell's film of The Goon. Apparantly footage was shown and it looked lovely, in a smashing zombie's around the head kind of way. /film had this to say.

At the moment, Clancy Brown is interested in voicing the Goon, and Paul Giamatti is interested voicing Frankie. We heard their voices in the clips, and they worked beautifully. But since the film isn’t fully greenlit, they’re not signed. The first clip was a ‘public service announcement’ from the Goon, who explained how to deal with a zombie, or slackjaw. “Pick up a hammer or a large wrench, maybe a rusty mailbox and…bash the fucker’s head in!” Then we saw Frankie at a bar with a slackjaw, and got a little dialogue from Giamatti complaining about getting a drink. It’s fun, vulgar and just dark enough.

I think that voice casting is just spot on and I hope they get signed for the feature. Clancy Brown's voice is just fantastic plus he was the Kurgen!

Halo goes Animatrix

Microsoft's new project, which it's announcing Thursday at Comic-Con for the first time, is a series of seven shorts set in the Halo universe and done in Japanese anime style.

Involved are the animation studios Bones, Casio Entertainment, Production I.G., Studio4[Degrees]C, and Toei Animation as well as the creative director helping to oversee production for Microsoft: Shinji Aramaki, director of "Appleseed" and "Appleseed Ex Machina."

Microsoft is financing and overseeing production through 343 Industries, its new internal division that's in charge of everything Halo. It's planning to preview them on the online gaming service Xbox Live this fall and has then enlisted Warner Bros. -- the game companies still need a little help from Hollywood -- to release them on DVD, Blu-ray and other digital platforms in early 2010.

Aramaki is directing his own short that tells the history of the Spartans, a warrior class in the game's fictional universe that main character Master Chief is part of. Though Halo isn't particularly popular in Japan -- most of its 27 million units sold have been in North America and Europe -- Aramaki said he's a player and was immediately interested in the possibility.

"I liked that this would be an anthology of human stories told from different characters' perspectives," he explained.

Frank O'Connor, creative director of 343, gave a peek at some of the other Halo Legend shorts. Studio4 C's project, tentatively called "Origins," is a two-parter that's about 30 minutes long in total and tells the entire 100,000 year history of the Halo universe. Another, from Toei, is the only one outside of the official canon and pokes fun at some of the game's characters.

Within the general anime style, the visual look of the projects differs widely.

"It's a wildly varied genre, but anime creators do things with weapons and vehicles and technology nobody else does, and that marries very well with Halo," he explained. "It's amazing to see some of the new stuff they're introducing and how neatly it maps to the visual aesthetics in the Halo universe."

Microsoft gave the production companies largely free reign in how the shorts looked, but O'Connor and others were heavily involved in developing the stories and making sure all the details were right.

HaloLegends2 "Depending on the studio, we did everything from writing the stories to feeding them with characters and scenarios they could explore," he said.

At first, he was a bit wary about revealing any details, but O'Connor quickly granted that when Microsoft releases a trailer for Halo Legends at its Comic-Con panel, fans are sure to pick apart every frame.

"I think the core 'Halo' fans will recognize key moments from the universe never shown in the game," he said. "They're moments where people wanted more depth. That's where this fits."

Fantastic Mr Fox - Photos from Wes Anderson's adaption of the Roald Dahl classic

The film focuses on a crafty fox (voiced by George Clooney) who finds himself and his family targeted for death by the three dumb, plug-ugly farmers who tire of sharing their chickens with the critter. The Fantastic Mr. Fox features the voices of George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Meryl Streep.

How about that for a cast! The film is due out on 13th November.

I'm a little unsure about the look of the film. Not what I was expecting, but typical Wes Anderson quirkyness. What are your thoughts?

Jackboots on Whitehall - Animated Nazis invade England

This sounds fantastic - England defeated by Nazi Germany during World War II and now occupied and only Scotland can save everyone.

It is an animated film featuring stop-motion, puppets and animatronics and has started filming today.

It stars Timothy Spall as Churchill, Alan Cumming as Hitler, Tom Wilkinson as Goebbels and Richard O'Brien as Himmler, along with Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ewan McGregor and Richard Griffiths. That is one hell of a cast.

Edward and Rory McHenry are writing and directing the film that will feature stop motion, puppeteering, and animatronics.

I can't wait to see some photos of the puppets.

Max Steel - Another action figure film heading our way

According to Variety Paramount Pictures and Joe Roth are partnering up to bring the Mattel action figure Max Steel to the big screen.

The toy follows a 19-year-old extreme sports junkie who gets picked by a secret agency when his body is taken over by nanobots and he becomes superhuman.

Mattel brought out the character as an action figure in the U.S. in 1999, and it followed that with an animated series that played from 2000-2002. This character gained a lot of traction in Latin America, where Max Steel, in that region, is the No. 1 action figure. Mattel made multiple animated direct-to-DVD features for that market

Mattel hopes that movies can relaunch the toy line in the U.S. and elsewhere.

"A theatrical film plays a significant role to relaunch the franchise," stated Mattel's Vice President of worldwide entertainment marketing and strategy, Barry Waldo. "But we have a strong Latin consumer we're going to keep happy while broadening the franchise for the rest of the world. We wouldn't do ourselves a favor if we turned a blind eye to it. That's the artistic challenge we've got."

Roth is serving as an executive producer on the project.

Currently, Mattel and Roth are looking for a screenwriter and director. The plan is for them to work closely with Mattel to create characters and a storyline that match what the company hopes to do with the property.

Max Steel marks the first film that Mattel has put together at Paramount since it started looking to turn it's toys into big screen vehicles.

Hong Kong Phooey - Number one movie guy.

Ready for another childhood cartoon to be ripped asunder and have all the goodness removed before it heads to the bigscreen?

According to Variety Alcon Entertainment will be making its live-action/animated version of Hong Kong Phooey with Alex Zamm directing. The screenplay was written by David Goodman.

The film will be an adaptation of the 1970s Hanna-Barbera animated TV series.

In this show a janitor that works at a police station turns into a dog with the ability to do kung fu. Much hilarity ensues.

This news just makes me feel pain in my head.

Gatchaman, Battle of the Planets, G Force - Whatever you call it here is the trailer

This is a videotaped recording of the Gatchaman teaser trailer that was shown at the 2009 Anime Expo.

Over here in the UK we had a cartoon called Battle of the Planets that took the original Japanese cartoon, cut it up, added the dreadful 7-Zark-7 and 1-Rover-1, and they made sure no one died. It was still cool though as it had the fiery Phoenix and Princess.

This new version looks pretty damn tasty.

Planet 51- Trailer
