Star Wars - Video from 1976 showing the Millenium Falcon being built

David Berry posted a home movie reel shot during the construction and second-unit filming of Star Wars models (i.e., Millenium Falcon, Empire fighters) inside a San Fernando Valley warehouse in 1976.

So far it is not embeddable but it is well worth having a look at the early days of Star Wars, back when effects were built rather than rendered.

Thanks to Jeffrey Wells for pointing it out.

Star Wars The Old Republic Timeline trailer 3: The Return of the Mandalorians

The Keeper of the Jedi Archives has entered a new holorecord. Continuing his investigation, Master Gnost-Dural delves deeper into the history of the galaxy after discovering that the blockade that Hylo Visz helped end was a result of the actions of the new Mandalore.

During a Republic resurgence in the Great War, a bold young warrior rose to fame in the Gladiatorial arenas on Geonosis. Adopting the ancient and infamous title of Mandalore, this young leader amassed an army of Mandalorian mercenaries and bounty hunters. The new Mandalore led his forces to form a blockade and challenge the Jedi Order, effectively turning the tide of the war back in the Sith Empire's favor.

Watch the third Timeline holorecord, The Return of the Mandalorians, narrated by actor Lance Henriksen.

TV Squad also say George Lucas may be at this years Comic Con to talk about aht live action Star Wars TV show that is due to start filming in Australia soon.

UPDATED: George Lucas: Maker of Films - Rare interview from 1971

Love him or hate him, at one point many of us thought George Lucas was the best thing in the world. Then came Jar Jar and things would never be the same.

Before a galaxy far, far away Lucas was just a young filmmaker making films any way he could. Quiet Earth found this excellent interview that Binary Bonsai dug up. Check out the Binary Bonsai site as they have lots of info on Lucas and the interview, however to introduce you to it here is a some of the background to it.

It is 1971, THX 1138 was released on March 11, American Zoetrope is spiraling towards certain doom, Lucas has become even more disillusioned with Hollywood than he was during his stint on McKenna’s Gold, and where exactly things go from here for the upstart and its members is all up in the air. And while American Zoetrope and Coppola had slowly started to cause waves — mostly due to THX’s failure as it were, though also because Coppola wasn’t afraid of touting American Zoetrope a state-of-the-art facility which could outmatch Hollywood, and that the company (and thus himself) was the future of filmmaking — Lucas was little more than a promising student who had made an obscure sci-fi film which opened small and died fast.

During the summer of ’71, as all of this is happening, Gene Youngblood interviewed the then 27-year-old Lucas for a Los Angeles-based educational TV station, KCET in an hour-long program called George Lucas: Maker of Films.
It is almost an hour long, but well worth a watch.

UPDATE: The original video on Vimeo was pulled but hopefully this new one should work.

Real life spaceport under construction

This isn't related to a film, but it is some excellent news for fans of space flight.

For everyone looking to hop the next commercial flight to space, your departure gate has finally been announced. Almost two years after the first plans were announced, construction has finally begun on Spaceport America. The spaceport, which will serve as the launch and landing pad for Virgin Galactic flights, is the first of its kind anywhere in the world, and represents the first serious commitment of infrastructure to manned commercial spaceflight.

According to the project website the festivities kick off today with a panel of speakers, food and drink, and even a mariachi band. Tomorrow, the construction begins in earnest.

Currently, Virgin Galactic only has two space ships, so it will probably be sometime before the facility experiences O'Hare and LaGuardia level traffic.

Someday, flights will leave from this spaceport with other spaceport destinations in mind, not just a return trip to New Mexico. It’ll be the 7 a.m. flight to Tokyo, or London. Travel time will be really short and partially weightless.

They've got to have a docking bay 94!

What an incredible smell you’ve discovered! Star Wars Bookends

I love these. Sure Lucas did a great job of throwing Star Wars in the trash with his last few efforts (did you see what I did there), but some of The Clone Wars animated series has been pretty good - as is anything else that he doesn't actually direct. Plus the merchandise associated with Star Wars is often excellent (as the recent Storm Trooper Adidas Originals show).

These 6" x 12" x 7.5" hand painted Trash Compactor Bookends are available for pre-order (shipping April 2010) from the Star Wars Store for $190.

Timeline of Sci-Fi movies

Dan Meth put together this brilliant chart putting futuristic films into their chronological order. He should have put Star Wars on A long time ago, but apart from that he seems to have got all the major movies.

Has he missed any classics?

These are not the shoes you are looking for - Cool Star Wars Adidas Originals

Trainers, sneakers, pumps, whatever you want to call them these are a nice fusion between Star Wars and Adidas. I do love the packaging on them. The first releases are scheduled for Spring/Summer 2010 at select retailers as well as adidas Originals Stores worldwide

Saucy Star Wars and Star Trek corsets

Here are a few items of clothing worn by models who look so happy to be wearing them. You can see the joy emanating from them....or they could be just acting moody.

The Star Trek corsets cost $200 and the Star Wars models (which include the rest of the costumes), are $500 (trooper) and $600 (Vader).

Star Wars: The Old Republic E3 2009 Jedi vs. Sith Trailer

Here's the trailer for Bioware's new Star Wars MMO game. It looks amazing.

The Old Republic takes place thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader and at a time when war was raging between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire.

77 - Trailer for a coming of age story set in the year Star Wars was released

32 years ago Yesterday Star Wars hit the World and changed the face of cinema as we know it. 10 years ago Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace was released and changed the face of Star Wars...not for the better. Darth Maul was cool though.

However, Jar Jar to one side, the original Star Wars was a big deal to an awful lot of people.

First Showing have the trailer for 77.

Alienated, hopeful-filmmaker Pat Johnson's (John Francis Daley) epic story about growing up in rural Illinois, falling in love, and becoming the first fan of the movie that changed everything.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi by David Lynch

George Lucas approached David Lynch to direct the third Star Wars film. He of course, turned it down. What if he hadn't?
