Dark Country - Trailer for Thomas Jane's new 3D thriller

I posted some cool photos for Thomas Jane's new thriller, Dark Country, back in March.

Now we have a trailer.

Good news is it also stars the mighty Ron Perlman and is due out on DVD on 6th October.

Two honeymooners rescue a mysterious car crash survivor in the Las Vegas desert. But their decision to save the man becomes increasingly regrettable when he turns on them, forcing the newlyweds to do the unthinkable.

In a blur of paranormal chaos, the couple must take drastic measures to cover up their actions from the local police, ultimately leading each character to an inescapable fate.

Give 'em Hell Malone - Cannes Trailer

I first mentioned the Russell Mulcahy (Highlander) film, Give 'em Hell Malone, back in September of last year.

Then there were teaser trailers, photos, and posters.

Now the new trailer for its Cannes debut has been released and it is below for your viewing pleasure.

Starring Thomas Jane, Ving Rhames, Elsa Pataky, Chris Yen, French Stewart, Doug Hutchison, Leland Orser, Eileen Ryan, Gregory Harrison and David Andriole.

I'm digging the look of this film. I love the whole pulp noir style of it all. What are your thoughts on it? Are you a fan of Thomas Jane? Will you be watching the film when it is released?

Give 'em Hell, Malone - Two new posters

The Moving Picture posted these two posters for Russell Mulcahy's Give 'em Hell Malone.

Looks like some poster designer has been reading their Sin City books. I personally feel these posters are a bit naff, but I am looking forward to seeing the film.

The film stars Thomas Jane as Malone along with Ving Rhames, Elsa Pataky, Leland Orser, French Stewart and Doug Hutchison

Thomas Jane is lost in Dark Country

Thomas Jane, has been directing a 3D horror film called Dark Country for the last year or so.

It stars Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, and Lauren German, the story follows a couple en route from Las Vegas that are forced to deal with a body out in the desert making their honeymoon one hellish ride.

According to First Showing it has some supernatural elements to it and Quiet Earth had these first photos from the film.

I am a big fan of Thomas Jane. I thought he was great as The Punisher and I've liked him in pretty much everything I've seen him in. Glad to see him teamed up with Ron Perlman again. He is another solid actor.

Although The Mutant Chronicles that they appeared in together was not very good.

The Mutant Chronicles - New images

Movieweb had these new images from The Mutant Chronicles. They look pretty good don't they. Sadly, I have seen the film and it had so much potential but it just didn't work for me. Check out The Mutant Chronicles review.
In the year 2707, war rages between earth's four giant corporations as they battle over the planet's dwindling resources. In an era marked by warfare and social regression, the earth is on the verge of ruin, destruction is everywhere; battles explode on every ravaged continent. Amidst heavy combat, an errant shell shatters an ancient buried seal releasing a horrific mutant army from its eternal prison deep within the earth. As the mutant scourge threatens human extinction, a single squad of soldiers descends into the earth to fulfill the ages-old prophesy of the Mutant Chronicles and save mankind.

Thomas Jane - Photos of Give 'em Hell Malone

I posted the trailer for Russell Mulcahy's Give 'em Hell Malone a while ago and I personally think it looks ace. Looks like a very hard boiled detective kind of story. Mulcahy previously directed Highlander.
Thomas Jane stars as Malone, a tough as nails private investigator who squares off with gangsters and thugs to protect a valuable secret. "Malone goes through hell to protect the information but he dishes some hell as well."
Film School Rejects got hold of the photos. As well as Thomas Jane there is also a shot of Elsa Pataky, but still no photos of Ving Rhames. It's due out in April next year. Will you be going to see this?

UPDATED: Give 'em Hell Malone - Poster and trailer for Thomas Jane's latest

I mentioned this a while ago but here is a poster and a teaser trailer for the Thomas Jane, Ving Rhames film. It's directed by Russell Mulcahy.

"Thomas Jane as the title character and Ving Rhames as his rival, "Boulder." Malone, tough private eye, takes a job retrieving a case containing a mysterious secret. Bullets, fists, and blood fly as he fights through an army of thugs to protect the secret."

UPDATE: Here's the embeded trailer below. It does look pretty cool and proper old school. Let me know what you think of it.

Mutant Chronicles, 2008 - Movie Review

Director: Simon Hunter
Starring: Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, John Malkovitch, Devon Aoki, Sean Pertwee, Pras
Running Time: 5 / 10
Score: 111 minutes
This review by Great Cthulhu.

Somehow this is just another example of a brand name being thrown into the shredder of film-making. One asks why? Especially with the rather unknown Mutant Chronicles (a role playing game, later board game, etc.). Well, I did play MC for a time maybe 14 years back and I liked it. So I looked forward to the movie – at least the cast looked good. But, at it was with many game/book/play/whatever turned into a movie – it had the same name, but most of the original background story is twisted, strangely falsified or just completely ripped out.

One has to ask why? While some changes always occur when converting something into a movie – for sake of pacing, storytelling, etc. – some changes are just stupid. It would have worked with the original story, but no, movie writers and directors seem just too clever and imaginative to just adapt a good story and so bastardize along, killing some of the vital features of the original story. In Mutant Chronicles this is the case with the complete background of the "Enemey", which is in the original game the Dark Legion, hailing from planet Nero, coming from another dimension and crippling all high tech with their "dark symmetry" – which is by the way why everything has this heavy industry/steam-punk flair. In the movie the enemy is a big machine that turns humans into zombies and lo! they go forth and destroy the Earth. The style is okay – they are heavily industrialized and use clumsy steam-punk's stuff – but the reason is never explained and has nothing to do with the evil that has come back. To whine on about the enemy only having one kind of mutant is pointless (they just trashed the original stuff more or less completely with the movie), but come on. Pedestrians without fine manipulation? That's the most evil the enemy can come up with? For a society as gun toting as the human race is in this movie, guys with a single spike for a hand (mutation sequence badly animated, and the spikes seem sharp and nasty, but can also be cut off with a knife) should not be that big a problem?!

Anyway. Some scenes of the movie are quite good, and the overall style of the costumes, backgrounds, etc. is not bad and captures some of the original flair. Then again the first believable and not somehow cheesy dialog happens in my book in the middle of the movie, between the main character and the captain of their drop-ship. That's something.

Shouting at the FX guys is also easy, you can only get some satisfaction from the overall computerish look if you like movies like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow – but Mutant Chronicles always comes off as something that was not really intended to look that way. It is like back in the 80s and early 90s some guys would cry "Science Fiction Movie" and go to some old factory or mine or subterranean dungeons and make a cheap sci-fi flick, pretending to be on Mars or whatnot. Today they seem to film a movie with the same shameless bad script, some clumsy acting and just smear so much CGI over it that is looks like a big picture with Special Effects. Almost all of the splatter effects could have been done better by make-up and "real" special effects.

Acting is okay (Jane, Perlman) to forgettable (most of the crew) to very bad (Malkovich, Walton). Some actors seem to have sensed that this maybe not the best movie of all times.

Overall another attempt to convert a nice story to the big screen, wasted for all the wrong reasons. But, isn't this the case with most of this kind of movie? So, if you like Sci-Fi you can try this one, maybe its "pseudo-artlyness" appeals to you. If you like a cheap flick with some nice scenes, wobbly dialog and cheesy one-liners to watch with some friends to have a laugh – good movie for that. If you know the original Mutant Chronicles stuff you will cringe in pain and gape in awe of what has happened to the story at time and at other times feel just a little bit of the flair of the game. Just a little bit.

UPDATED: Give 'em Hell, Malone - Thomas Jane, Ving Rhames

Moviehole have news that Russell Mulcahy (Razorback, Highlander) has signed on to direct the unfortunately titled, Give 'em Hell, Malone, starring Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames.

A tough as nails private investigator (Malone) squares off with gangsters and their thugs to protect a valuable secret. Malone goes through hell to protect the information but he dishes some hell as well.

It is apparantly going to be filmed in Spokane, Washington which is where Twin Peaks was shot.

The Random

The Movie Blog Uncut confirms that Thomas Jane isn't the one they wanted. Directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were on the latest episode and mentioned that: "He's a great guy… But we don't see the guy as Jonah Hex, to be quite honest with you. But we like him."

Inglorious Bastards casting news. Instead of DiCaprio, German TV actor Christoph Waltz will be taking on that role. And instead of the previously announced Nastassja Kinski, actress Diane Kruger (who we know most from the National Treasure movies) will be taking on the role of Bridget Von Hammersmark.

Slap Shot, the classic 1977 politically incorrect hockey comedy starring Paul Newman is being remade. The update comes from YourMovieMaven

In production this year is a biopic on Beatles singer John Lennon titled Nowhere Boy. The script details "the story of Lennon as a lonely teenager growing up as his aunt and the mother who gave him up fight for his love. His only escape is music, art and his fateful friendship with Paul McCartney."

Edgar Wright has chimed in with an update on Scott Pilgrim vs the World via Wizard. For those who are unfamiliar, Scott Pilgrim is an adaptation of a comic book that's currently in the middle of its run.

The Mutant Chronicles Teaser is out there

The futuristic war movie, The Mutant Chronicles, now has a teaser trailer and it looks like it could be a good movie. Very dark and realistic looking in a sci-fi kind of way. Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman star. Directed by Simon Hunter.

The Mutant Chronicles - Poster.

This is the latest movie from Thomas Jane. Also starring Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich. Directed by Simon Hunter.
It's based on an old RPG and imdb.com states the plot as being "23rd century soldier Major Mitch Hunter (Jane) leads a fight against an army of underworld NecroMutants."
Any film starring NecroMutants has got to be good. It reminds me of Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. Now there was a movie!

The Mist, 2007. DVD Review

Director: Frank Darabont
Starring: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Toby Jones, Andre Braugher
Running Time: 125 minutes

Score: 7/10

Not to be confused with John Carpenter's The Fog, this is an entirely different sort of beast (although one dealing with a weather condition similar in form). Based on a 1980 novella by Stephen King, this is a horror movie directed by Frank Darabont. As he also directed the superb Shawshank Redemption, also based on a King short story, you have your seal of quality right there (On a side note the original novella apparantly inspired the computer games Half-Life and Silent Hill).

The film is set in King's favourite haunt, Maine, and deals with a small town and the aftermath of a storm. While checking out the damage caused to his house by the storm, David Drayton (Thomas Jane), and his son, Billy (Nathan Gamble) notice a thick cloud of mist heading towards town across the lake. Thinking nothing more of it they head into town with their neighbour, Brent Norton (Andre Braugher), for supplies. While in the supermarket, they hear sirens and look on as a man with a bleeding head, Dan Miller, runs into the shop screaming about something dangerous in the mist. Shortly after the town is swamped by the mist and they hear strange noises and screams outside. Then all goes quiet before the store is hit by an earthquake. Not sure what's going on most of the people in the supermarket stay put while a couple head off to find out what has happened to their loved ones.

The rest settle down to see what happens. While getting something for his son in the supermarket's warehouse, David Drayton hears something large banging against the door of the loading dock. Telling some of the others about this they go to investigate. Opening the door of the loading dock they let something in and then things get really bad for them.

Meanwhile, Mrs Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden) is convinced that all of the recent events point to the end times and that it is all Gods will. As events progress more and more of the survivors begin to side with her and listen to her cries for a sacrifice. David and his friends then have to not only survive the monsters in the mist but also the more dangerous human ones within.

Now this is a great little movie. I say little as it had a small budget but this was used brilliantly. The first few scenes did give it the feel of a made for TV movie, but my worries soon lifted as they headed into town. The tension is raised throughout the film and the horror you feel as Mrs Carmody's influence begins to take hold of some of the survivors is almost as bad as that felt whenever someone heads out into the mist. Characterisation on all involved is pretty good, and you are never sure who is going to make it to the end of the movie. All the actors involved are brilliant and really help you buy into their plight.

The monsters in the mist are, on the whole, weird looking and spooky (Bernie Wrightson helped in their design). Some of the CGI is a bit ropey, but this never really detracts from the film itself as the beasties are only a small part and are often hidden within the mist. In fact the effects seem to get better as the film progresses. It must be noted that Frank Darabont originally wanted the film to be in black and white which would probably make the CGI blend in even better. In fact the special edition DVD has a B&W version, but I have yet to get hold of that.

There is not much music used throughout the film but when it is it just rips the emotion up to another level. In particular the use of Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance near the end of the movie is abso-bleedin-fantastic. The whole feel of the movie is quite unlike that of most Hollywood films.

Speaking of the end of the movie, I guarantee it will stay with you for a long, long time. It works really well and although different from the end of the novella, Stephen King gave it his blessing and apparantly wished he had thought of it.

To sum up this is a great horror movie that may leave you feeling like you've been punched in the gut, but in a good way.

The film is released in the UK next month. Go check it out.

JONAH HEX - Bunked, debunked and now rebunked? Film School Rejects has a comment direct from actor Thomas Jane about the photo that circulated last week and had director Mark Neveldine disavowing publicly. Jane wrote, "Yeah, the pic is real all right -- my pal Akiva Goldsman told me about the project and I fell in love with the idea right away. Being a huge fan of all things Hex -- I just couldn't help myself. I called up my buddy Chris Nelson and we spent a Saturday afternoon working up some make-up for this impromptu shoot and I fired a few pics off to Warners. How do people get a hold of this shit? It's a little embarrassing seeing my fanboy enthusiasm spilled all over the web, but great scripts don't come around too often, especially for characters I love." So -- to sum up -- yes, it's Thomas Jane and no, the studio nor the production aren't involved. Right, then.

SPIDER-MAN 4 - According to E! Online, producer Laura Ziskin told Nevada and California theater owners that "Spider-Man 4 won't hit theaters until at least 2011. She said there is no script yet and neither Maguire nor director Sam Raimi have signed on."

THE GREEN HORNET - What's that? An official teaser site? Cool ...

BILLY BATSON AND THE LEGEND OF SHAZAM - Director Peter Segal talked to FirstShowing.net about bringing the wizard and the hero to the silver screen. "We're still working on the script," Segal said. "An interesting little development, but it's an annoying one, is that after a strike there are residual effects and one was that everyone who was a writer suddenly had a back log of assignments as did John August, so we started to do our re-write process but he had to service some of these other prior commitments. So now we're kind of waiting in line to get him back but it's worked out okay because we've been working on the marketing of this and getting this going, so we've been doing enough to keep ourselves busy and as soon as this movie gets released then we're going to focus again on 'Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam.'"

KICK-ASS - Creator Mark Millar told CBR News a little about his next cinematic endeavour.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE - Musician Will.I.Am spoke to MTV about his involvement in the Hugh Jackman-fueled spinoff. "I'm a teleporter. ... I'm here, I'm there, I'm everywhere. Boom, boom, boom!" he said. "My character's name is John Wraith. He's a black Texan. He's not a cowboy, but his gear suggests that he is. He's just a bad ass who'll whoop your ass."

THE SPIRIT - You've seen the posters of the lovely ladies in the Will Eisner adaptation ... but now they talk to you? Just run your cursor tenderly across the images on this new page at Yahoo! Movies and hear the actresses speak their lines.

INCREDIBLE HULK BOX OFFICE - The word from Comingsoon.net (domestic and international results) is that "Incredible Hulk" has pulled in $96.5 million, about $4 million behind the previous "Hulk" movie five years ago. Internationally, "The Incredible Hulk" finished a close second by grabbing $23.4 million at 4,700 theaters from 50 territories in its second weekend. "Hulk" has raised its totals to $63.3 million overseas and $159.8 million worldwide.
