DC Comic characters heading to the big screen - Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman are the Trinity in control

In the past, Warners optioned a property, paying DC a fee comparable to what a property could command on the open market. But while the projects ostensibly were being developed under one roof, many were spread out over a host of producers, each with different visions for how to approach each adaptation.
To bring competing approaches into sync, DC Comics president Paul Levitz and DC's Los Angeles-based film exec Gregory Noveck have overseen a reorganization of the development slate. While Warners execs still drive the creative side, DC now has more input, making it an actual participant in the shaping of material.
"The creative process is by and large a true partnership," Noveck said. "They'll ask us a ton of questions, and we'll give a ton of answers. We will talk back and forth. We'll discuss writers and talent, but ultimately it's their decision."
Warners quietly hired three of DC's biggest writers -- Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman -- to act as consultants and writers for its superhero line of movies. The move involved taking back the reins on projects being handled by such producers as Charles Roven ("The Flash") and Akiva Goldsman ("Teen Titans").
Some agents and scribes grumbled about being forced to work with the consultants, never mind that Johns started his career as a assistant to "Superman" director Richard Donner or that Wolfman has worked in animation since the 1980s.
Johns worked up a new treatment for a "Flash" script, being written by Dan Mazeau; Johns will act in a producer capacity on the project, which has not attached a director.
The projects Morrison and Wolfman are working on are in the early stages at Warners, whose execs declined to comment.
The process involves one writer taking point, though the trio do collaborate on projects, reading one another's materials while hashing out a story that will be at once accessible to nonfans yet still adhere to each character's long history. The writers also work in tandem with producers, writers and the Warners execs overseeing the projects, showing them treatments and providing notes on scripts.
Meanwhile, other superhero projects are moving forward at Warners.
The studio is taking pitches on sci-fi hero Adam Strange and the underwater hero "Aquaman," to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way shingle.
Also in the pipeline: "Bizarro Superman" being written by "Galaxy Quest" scribes David Howard and Robert Gordon; a sequel to "Constantine," with Goldsman and Erwin Stoff producing; two concurrent Green Arrow projects, an origin story and a prison-set one titled "Super Max"; and "Shazam," which was set up at New Line but has moved to Warners, with Pete Segal attached to direct.
However, it will be a while before we see DC's Trinity of main characters back on the big screen.
Warners and DC still haven't figured out how to translate "Wonder Woman" to the big screen. In part, that failure reflects the difficulties DC has had turning out a popular Wonder Women comic. Morrison, during a recent Q&A with Clive Barker at Los Angeles' Meltdown Comics, admitted he didn't have a complete handle on the character when he was writing the comic "Final Crisis."
Also, ever since Bryan Singer's 2006's "Superman Returns," a new Superman has been in limbo.
"Our hope is to develop a Superman property and to try again," Warner Bros. Entertainment president Alan Horn said in April. "What hurt us is that the reviews and so on for the Superman movie did not get the kind of critical acclaim that Batman got, and we have other issues with Superman that concern us."
On the Batman front, a sequel to "Dark Knight" also is quite a way off. Nolan is open to doing a third installment, but his next movie is "Inception," an original script he penned and is shooting for Warners.

The Losers and Freddy Krueger to go head to head in 2010

According to Box Office Mojo, the adaption of DC Comics The Losers will hit theaters on 16th April 2010. This is the same release date as New Line’s A Nightmare on Elm Street
Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earle Haley are the leading men of The Losers and Nightmare.
As far as I was aware The Losers had yet to start filming so it is a bit of a surprise for the release date to be announced so soon.
2010 should be quite a good year for Comic Book lovers - The Losers, Iron Man 2, Jonah Hex and Scott Pilgrim vs The World announced so far.
Out of The Losers and The Nightmare on Elm Street remake which one are you most looking forward to?

Megan Fox's part just a cameo in Jonah Hex?

However it looks as if Fox's character is not going to be in it that much.
“It’s basically a cameo,” said Fox speaking to MTV. “She’s a twisted love-interest to Jonah’s character; my part’s pretty small.”
Jonah Hex lives in a deadly world filled with lies, lead and life-threatening encounters. Which is why Fox’s next statement made it seem even less likely that her character Leila would be returning for those sequels.
“I worked the first week, and then I was shot out of the movie,” she explained “My scenes with Josh were my favorite, because he really pushed me as an actor. He obviously knows what he’s doing.”
Although the film, directed by relative-newcomer Jimmy Hayward, is a no-nonsense genre flick, Fox was quick to point out that Josh Brolin approached it with the same acting chops as his recent Oscar-nominated work in “Milk.”
And although Megan may not get much screentime in “Jonah Hex,” she said that the film is some of her best acting yet – and Brolin’s work may be nothing short of iconic. “He is a sort of chemically-enhanced, nuclear John Wayne on steroids,” Fox said of Jonah.
I think it will be a little more than a cameo though as photos show she has at least two costumes and she previously mentioned that she'll be shooting someone. Looks like it will probably be a few scenes in the film.

Megan Fox talks about Jonah Hex

"That movie is gonna be amazing," Fox stated. "It's a post-civil war, apocalyptic type Western. The director Jimmy [Hayward] is a lunatic, and he might be a genius. From some of the things I've seen him shoot, it's a badass movie."
"They've changed her name a couple of times - it's Leila now," Fox said. "She is a prostitute. She's a good ol' working girl, and she's a love-interest to Jonah... of sorts. I mean, it's by no means a classic type of relationship."
"Her name was initially Liala, and now they changed it - or it was Layla, and now they changed it to Leila. ... All the women in the movie are prostitutes. ... [I'm] sort of a tough, no-nonsense prostitute. Like, she'll shoot you in the head if she has to. And she does!"
The film stars Josh Brolin as Jonah along with John Malkovich and Will Arnett.
Check out the photos of Brolin as Hex and more of the lovely Megan Fox.
Jonah Hex is due out on 6th August 2010

Jonah Hex joins Batman: The Brave and the Bold

We have to wait a while longer to see the Josh Brolin Jonah Hex in action, but in the meantime we can catch up with the animated version of character. I remember an old episode of Batman: The Animated Series that featured Hex, but good to see him again.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold continues on the Cartoon Network this Friday June 12th in the episode "Duel of the Double Crossers!" When Mongul recruits Jonah Hex to bring new gladiators to War World, the old west bounty hunter wrangles the Dark Knight. After a change of heart, Hex and Batman team up to take down the violent empire.

First look at Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex

Now these photos of Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex have turned up (via AICN) and it is looking pretty good. He certainly looks the part and they've got the scarring almost right (I'm wondering if they may make it a little more icky in post production in a Two-Face stylee)

Megan Fox has joined Jonah Hex and Fathom

Fox has signed on to star in Jonah Hex alongside of Josh Brolin and John Malkovich in Warner Brothers' adaptation of the DC Comics series. Fox will play Leila, a gun-wielding beauty and love interest of Hex, a disfigured bounty hunter who is tracking down a voodoo practitioner that wants to raise an army of undead to liberate the South. Jimmy Hayward will direct that adaptation starting in April for a August 6th, 2010 release.
In Fathom, Fox will play the lead character Aspen, who learns she is a member of a race of aquatic humanoids who possess the ability to control water.
How do they grab you? How do you rate Megan Fox? Can she carry the Fathom movie considering in the comic the lead character pretty much wears a bikini the whole time? Was that a leading question?

The Random - The Matarese Circle, Christopher Nolan on Inception, Malkovich in Jonah Hex, Nightmare on Elm Street, 20,000 Leagues rewrite
Christopher Nolan will be shooting another project before working on Batman 3. He will direct a sci-fi action film called Inception at Warner Brothers which will be released in the summer of 2010. Described as a "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind." Sounds deep and trippy, kind of like a Tron for the cerebellum! Warner Brothers is producing with Nolan's wife Emma Thomas. Have no fear on the fate of Batman as Nolan made The Prestige between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
John Malkovich will join Josh Brolin in the comic book western, Jonah Hex, which starts shooting in April. Malkovich will play the villain, Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger.
News is out that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and New Line have hired a director for the reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street, bringing on Samuel Bayer to direct the reimagining of the Wes Craven classic. Bayer is best-known work is in commercials and music videos; he's won best director at MTV's VMAs and is responsible many classic videos, including Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Blind Melon's video for "No Rain."
Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Voltron) has been brought in to rewrite Bill Marsilii's draft script for Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo says The Hollywood Reporter. McG (Terminator: Salvation) remains attached to direct the big-budget underwater adventure which Sean Bailey is producing. I just hope the rewrite ends up better than the original script did.

The Random - Joan Jett, Jonah Hex, Magdalena, Repo Chick, Alex Cox, Romancing the Stone, In the Hand of Dante, Captain Blood
Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone) has apparantly been approached to direct the Jonah Hex film.
Gale Anne Hurd says that Magdalena (based on the Top Cow comic), starring Luke Goss (Hellboy 2, Blade 2) and Jenna Dewan, is like The Da Vinci Code meets Wanted. The Magdalena has the ability to see into the human heart, to show people the error of their ways and give them the choice to redeem their sins. There is only one in a generation, and she alone stands and takes arms against the evils of the world. Apart from the powers she is born with, the Magdalena wields the Spear of Destiny, the spear that pierced the side of Christ, as a holy and formidable weapon against the twisted and the evil.
Alex Cox starts work on his sequel to Repo Man next month, David Lynch is producing it. It will be called Repo Chick. Cool fact, Alex Cox went to my school and I sometimes see him drinking in a pub near me. I must approach him about this next time our paths cross.
The "inside source" that said George Miller was off of the Justice League film was wrong, and according to official representatives Miller is still on the film and the project is still being developed.
Romancing the Stone may be getting remade.
Jonny Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, has acquired the rights to Nick Tosches' novel "In the Hand of Dante" that was first published in 2002. The book is about Dante's "The Divine Comedy," and tells parallel storylines involving Dante in 14th-century Italy as he tries to complete the work, and a contemporary storyline involving Tosches, who is asked to authenticate what might be Dante's original manuscript.
Warner Brothers is remaking the 1935 swashbuckling pirate film Captain Blood that starred Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Basil Rathbone. Philip Noyce (Patriot Games) is down to direct it.
Production Weekly have more.

Josh Brolin thinks Jonah Hex script is awful but would be fun to do!

MTV have been speaking to Josh Brolin about Jonah Hex. This morning, Variety broke the news that due to “creative differences,” Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have officially dropped out as directors for the in-early-development, big screen adaptation of “Jonah Hex” — DC’s resident post-apocalyptic, anti-hero cowboy. And while we could speculate all day as to what those “differences” were, the writing was on the wall when we spoke to Josh Brolin a few days ago, the actor who’s had an on-again, off-again attachment to the lead role of Hex.
“When I first read it I thought, oh my God it’s awful!” Brolin exclaimed to MTV News. “And then I had a moment a week later and I thought why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.”
The idea of doing “Hex” grew on Brolin, the actor told us, proclaiming that in the hands of the right director and cast it could be a winner. When asked if the “Crank” helmers were still on board, Brolin replied, “It’s all up in the air,” an early indication of today’s announcement that the duo were leaving the project.
According to Brolin, it’s the zaniness of the story that attracts him to the project. “[I love] the absurdity of it,” he said. “It almost allows you to create a new genre. I love going back into the spaghetti western idea and completely turning it around.”
When pressed further if and when he plans on making an official announcement regarding taking the role, Brolin replied, “Soon. In the last couple months I’ve been going back and forth about it. I went back to my gut. Is it a sell out? What is it I like about this movie? … It’s so tongue in cheek. It’s so ridiculous. But once I started putting people in my mind and saying what if I put Malkovich in this role then what does this movie become? Now let’s put this producer and director on it and think about how it plays out. Then it becomes fun. Now I love that movie. If you have a great filmmaker come in then suddenly these gags and characters become interesting.”
What do you think about Brolin's reaction to the script? Does it make you interested or turn away in a cowboy stylee?HOME / FORUM.

Jonah Hex is saddling up. Is Josh Brolin taking the reins?

Filmstalker mentioned this and yes it is another comic book movie. However, this time it's a Western one.
Josh Brolin is being linked to the adaptation of the western anti-hero comic book character Jonah Hex, a former Confederate soldier who travels across the pretty much lawless old West of the U.S. (that's in the past I'll have you know) working as a vigilante and bounty hunter. With a badly scarred face and a struggle with alcoholism, he's a dark and complex character. The character received his signature scar at the hands of Indians who placed a hot tomahawk to his face. His mother was a prostitute and his dad sold him into slavery. It's to be directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank, Game) and to be funded and released by Warner Bros.
Neveldine/Taylor have said that they don’t plan on “making a straight-ahead Western but plan to develop the character with some of the supernatural overtones in the hopes of creating a franchise.”
According to Hollywood Elsewhere the deal is done and he's the man (although his reps are currently denying it), and the story from Cinema Blend tells us that the film version will have plenty of CGI and science fiction elements.
What do you make of the news? Excited? Jonah Hex is a pretty cool character and Westerns seem to be having a little bit of a come back these days. I think Josh Brolin is perfect fit for the part.
