Sherlock Holmes coming to the BBC with a modern day spin

Robert Downey Jr is starring as a different take on Holmes and now it looks as if there will be a another version.
The BBC confirmed today it has commissioned the first series of the new Sherlock Holmes series, written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, as three ninety minute episodes.
Moffat is the new Doctor Who showrunner and Tintin screenplay writer, Gatiss is best known as a member of comedy troupe, The League Of Gentlemen.
Gattiss, was one of the four creators of League Of Gentlemen, has writtne episodes of Dr Who and the Lucifer Box novels.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Fortysomething and The Last Enemy) will star as Holmes with The Office’s Martin Freeman as Doctor Watson, set in 2009 London, remaking Holmes as a “dynamic superhero” figure. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade and Coky Giedroyc will direct the series.
Not sure if this is a great idea or whether it will blow great big chunks of cheese. The fact Moffat is involved means it should hopefully be good.

Sherlock Holmes - Posters for Guy Ritchie's new film
Here are a couple of nice looking posters for Guy Ritchie's Lock Stock version of Sherlock Holmes. Nothing like the smog of old London town to give a bit of a backdrop to the master detective. Looking closely though, I must admit that both look like they are almost painted on. Downey Jr still looks nothing like any Holmes we have seen before, but that may be a good thing.Still the photos and trailer do make it look as if this film will be a lot of fun.

Empire had the posters.
What do you think of them? Are you looking forward to seeing the film?

UPDATED: Robert Downey Jr talks Iron Man 2
Robert Downey Jr spoke to ET about the forthcoming Iron Man 2."The film is almost entirely about character, and yet we still have twice as much action as we did last time, so it's going to be nuts," said Downey Jr, set to start filming Monday. "Essentially 'Iron Man 2' is about looking behind the armor, or the armature, of a superhero. It's one thing to say you're Iron Man, it's another thing to be fully ready to do that."
Robert says he's no longer on his strict 'Sherlock Holmes' diet and has returned to some serious iron to once again portray Tony Stark: "I'm on Beefcake Charlie status," he jokes. "I've got to not be the skinny Brit anymore. I have to be the Tony that you know and may have loved."
As for co-star Scarlett Johansson, who plays the femme fatale Black Widow in the sequel, Robert says, "We've been rehearsing and she's in insane shape. She's getting lean and mean."

Thoughts on the G.I. Joe and Sherlock Holmes Footage at ShoWest
The good folks over at First Showing have seen some footage of various films at ShoWest in Las Vegas. Here is a snippet of what they thought of a couple of them.
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Essentially, what I saw was a super charged mix of high tech bio suits, lasers, futuristic military vehicles, guns of every type, jumping, dodging, spinning, bio-gadgetry, and whimsical technology that we only see in movies. And this isn't a good thing. Everybody remembers The Mummy Returns, also directed by Stephen Sommers, and how they just threw in everything they could into that to beef it up and it made it so damn cheesy? Some sort of thing here, except that instead of mummies, we've got Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans wearing ridiculous-looking armored suits with helmets that emulate the Iron Man visor.Sherlock Holmes
Interesting stuff. I get the feeling G.I. Joe will be a cheese fest with a couple of cool bits thrown in and Sherlock Holmes will split opinion right down the middle. I think it will all depend if you are a fan of Guy Ritchie's previous films. The first thing you need to know is that this isn't the Sherlock Holmes you know… It a funky way, it's kind of like if Snatch were about a British detective from the 1800s, which is exactly what it is, thanks to Guy Ritchie writing and directing. The reaction didn't seem to be overly positive, at least coming from a few other writers that I know. It is a bit of a shock at first, because it's such a big departure from expectations, and I hope most people still like it.
But is it good? To be honest, I enjoyed it, it looked very fun. I'm not expecting anything incredible, and although I do really appreciate Guy Ritchie (I loved both Snatch and even RocknRolla), I wasn't expecting a new Guy Ritchie classic like Snatch. Honestly, I'm just expecting a good popcorn flick, which is exactly what it looks like. The first big shocker is that this looks like a buddy comedy, not a serious movie, with some really zany British humor that may really turn off quite a few people. But of course, you'll all get your own taste of that whenever you get to see this trailer, and can judge for yourself whether it works or not.
Then I remember that it's Robert Downey Jr., in that signature top hat, with his signature pipe, and with six pack abs and no shirt (in one scene where he's boxing another guy), kicking some serious ass, and I'm reminded why I actually still am looking forward to this.

The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment snapped up the feature film rights to the book, "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero."The biography was written by William Kalush and Larry Sloman.
Published in 2006 from Atria Books, the book postulated that Harry Houdini was really a spy for Britain and was also asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II's court in prerevolutionary Russia. In addition to this, the book "portrayed the master escape artist and magician as a debunker of con artists who pretended to be spiritualists, leading to the controversial theory that Houdini's death was caused by the spiritual movement as payback."
The studio is not looking to make a biopic but rather an action thriller featuring a character who is part Indiana Jones and part Sherlock Holmes. Summit hopes to cash in on worldwide recognition of Houdini’s name while potentially launching a franchise.

Sherlock Holmes - First look at Mark Strong as the villainous Lord Blackwood
Here is a first look at Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood from Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes film. As you may well know Holmes is played by Robert Downey Jr and Watson by Jude Law (both are shown below).Teaser Trailer had the photo along with some of Mark's words about the ending of the film.
There’s a fantastic sequence where we duel to the death on a half-built Tower Bridge. It’s a perfect way to end the movie, Robert and I hammering seven bells out of each other on top of this swinging bridge with Victorian London as a backdrop. It’s going to be amazing. As they say it does sounds an awful lot like the final showdown between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls.
There’s a touch of Dracula about him (Lord Blackwood).
He needed to have an element of showmanship about him by virtue of the fact that he’s trying to persuade everyone around him that he’s so in league with the Devil that he’s able to conquer death. I just wanted to make him an equal adversary of Sherlock Holmes.”
I am still not sure about the look of the characters in this film. All looks a bit too scruffy, but then I don't know what context the photos are in relation to the plot. What do you make of Lord Blackwood and Mark Strong's description of his comeuppance? Are you excited about seeing this or do you think Guy Ritchie is the wrong director for this film?HOME - Discuss in the Forum

Batman is the next Harry Potter
/film have the news that during today’s Time Warner earnings call, CEO Jeff Bewkes compared the Batman series to the Harry Potter film franchise, saying that they hope to release a long line of sequels. “We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago. Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy taht very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 - 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”
What do you reckon? Good news or bad? Christopher Nolan will do another one but will he do any more? Will Zack Snyder step in? Will it all end up with The Dark Knight Returns and an older Batman returning from retirement? It would be so good to see that showdown with Superman.Who would you like to see directing Batman once Nolan steps down?

Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes
The above photo of Watson (Jude Law), Holmes and Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) was first shown by USA Today from Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. The newspaper spoke with Robert Downey Jr. about his reactions to the Oscar nomination (Tropic Thunder). It looks as if Sherlock Holmes will be a PG-13 which is a bit of a change for a Guy Ritchie film. The production shifted from London to New York in January and is finishing its last few weeks of shooting.Discuss in the Forum

Tom and Jerry to be CGIfied - Tell me it ain't so
Variety have the hideous news that the brilliant Tom and Jerry are to go the way of Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Why Hollywood Why?Warner Bros. is turning to Tom and Jerry to create its own "Alvin and the Chipmunks"-like family franchise.
Plans are to bring the constantly warring cat and mouse to life as CG characters that run around in live-action settings.
Studio-based Dan Lin, currently producing the upcoming "Sherlock Holmes" and exec producer on "Terminator: Salvation," will adapt the classic Hanna-Barbera property as an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home.
Eric Gravning is penning the script.
Interest in the new projects certainly ramped up after "Alvin and the Chipmunks" earned a whopping $360 million worldwide, besting even Fox’s predictions for the pic, which was budgeted at $60 million. A sequel was quickly greenlit, with the singing rodents skedded to hit the screen again in 2010.
Revenue potential from worldwide box office, DVD, games and merchandise sales, as well as the potential for sequels and earnings from TV and homevid spinoffs, is considered too good to pass up.
The built-in familiarity of the characters has studio bosses feeling they’re not taking the kind of risk associated with creating a new property marketing mavens must promote from scratch.
"Tom and Jerry" originated as a series of 114 animated shorts, produced by MGM’s toon studio between 1940 and 1960, and won seven Academy Awards. New toons were produced after that, and Warner Bros. released "Tom and Jerry: The Movie" in 1992 as a feature-length toon.
Anyone else think this has bad idea written all over it? Mind you my kids loved the Garfield and Alvin movies so the target audience will no doubt dig it. However, that normal animated Tom and Jerry film from a few years ago was not so good.
