Castlevania film is reborn

Last I heard the Castlevania film adaption was as dead as can be, but it has once more risen from the grave.

James Wan, the co-mastermind behind the Saw franchise, and director of Dead Silence and Death Sentence, will be co-writing and directing Castlevania for producer Paul W.S. Anderson. Sylvain White was originally slated to direct. Castlevania is an adaptation of the popular NES game from the 80's that has since become a massive video game franchise.

"I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," James Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive chat. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

"The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he continues. "That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.”

Tim Burtons to start shooting Dark Shadows soon

While talking about his new Alice in Wonderland film Tim Burton got onto the subject of his adaption of the vampire infested soap opera, Dark Shadows.

“That’s something that [Depp and I] both love and are excited about,” the director told MTV News. “When I’m done with this (Alice) I’ll definitely focus on that.”

Shadows” will be based on the ‘60s soap opera of the same name, an ABC daytime TV show that incorporated elements of gothic romance, science fiction and supernatural phenomena like ghosts, zombies and vampires. Depp will reportedly play vampire Barnabas Collins.

“It’s another challenge because it was such a weird soap opera,” Burton explained. “Part of the energy of it was the tone and weirdness of it. That’s our challenge, to try to capture that vibe.”
That vibe was part campy melodrama, part dead serious—and decidedly odd—storytelling. Which direction does Burton plan on going?

“It’s always a fine line,”
he said. “That remains to be seen. That’s a question and a challenge we talk about a lot. I haven’t arrived at the answer. That’s definitely a main issue, the tone and the vibe of it because as we all know melodrama can cross over. It’s one of the more interesting things about it.”

Will The Eternal find peace?

Another Vampire film but I like the story behind this one. Kind of like Dracula and Highlander mashed up.

Samuel Gradius has lived too long. In his 500 years on earth he has seen empires rise and fall, changed the course of history with his bare hands and experienced countless revolutions first hand. Samuel Gradius is a vampire, perhaps the only vampire, and he’s had enough. He wants to die. No longer content with the idea of simple suicide, he makes the decision to go out in the ways of old. He wants a warrior’s death. The Eternal follows Samuel on the pursuit of his own personal oblivion, he hopes, at the hands of someone worthy.

Apparantly their is a graphic novel prequel:

The Eternal: Final Dawn tells the life (and undead) story of Samuel Gradius, born in 1463 Scotland as Samhairle Greme. Twelve chapters tell his journey, from birth until 2009, and the first moments of the feature film The Eternal. Set against the backdrop of real history and known myth, the horrific, tragic and humorous collide in The Eternal: Final Dawn. Welcome to Samuel’s world – we can’t guarantee your safety.”

The graphic novel represents the first step in offering a unique immersive experience for an independent film, as out of the twelve total issues, the first six will be offered online in monthly installments, entirely free. The first issue is expected to be offered online later this year, and will be previewed at the upcoming Rue Morgue Festival of Fear in Toronto. You can view the teaser issue here.

Daybreakers - Trailer for Willem Dafoe vampire film

I love the concept of this - a world of vampires - and the trailer looks great. Puts me in mind of the Blade universe if Deacon Frost had won.

Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

Check out the poster and photos for the film. Watch the trailer and let me know what you think.

Written & directed by Peter Spierig
Starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan

Out on 8th January 2010

Daybreakers - Vampires and humans working together

This has been in post production since 2007. Sounds like a great idea for a film.
In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher (Ethan Hawke) works with a covert band of vamps (Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan) on a way to save humankind.
Willem Dafoe always brings that crooked charm to his roles and it will be good to see him play another vampire after the brilliant Shadow of the Vampire.

The film also stars Sam Neill. That looks like him in the top photo below.

The photos do show that these vampires are more like the ones from Blade, organised and businesslike in their dealings.

It is not clear from the description, but the photos also suggest that Ethan Hawke is also a vampire. So all of the main characters are vampires? I think I've got that right. Instead of just finding a way to ensure there is enought blood for the vamps is Ethan trying to find a cure to the curse itself?

Daybreakers is written and directed by Australian brothers Michael and Peter Spierig. Lionsgate are releasing it on 8th January 2010 next year.

Will Morbius the Living Vampire be in Spider-Man 4?

CHUD have part of an interview from Fear.net with Sam Raimi. They ask Sam of the possibility of a vampire being in the new Spidey film. He responds with “What? I don’t know anything about that”. Then he goes on to explain why vampires are so cool.
"I guess they're very appealing. The best of villains have some positive qualities. That is - they can be very sexy and alluring. And the way in which they attack you is very sensual, it's almost something you desire."

"That's why I like the fact that there is a cure against them in some of the lore, like garlic or the cross. That's really interesting, that there is a way to stop them. There's a whole story that can be made with all those elements. So its got some real rules and laws…"

"And that you can be turned into one of them is interesting also. Its got a lot of enticing qualities for a storyteller or an audience."
The main vampire in Spider-Man's world is Morbius.
Michael Morbius was born in Greece. He was attacked by the Lizard and defeated when Spider-Man and the Lizard joined forces. A flashback reveals that Morbius was actually a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist, who had attempted to cure himself of a rare blood disease with an experimental treatment involving vampire bats and electroshock therapy. However, he instead became afflicted with a far worse condition that mimicked the powers and blood-thirst of legendary vampirism. Morbius now had to digest blood in order to survive and had a strong aversion to light. He gained the ability to fly, as well as superhuman strength, speed, and healing abilities. His appearance became hideous—his canine teeth extended into fangs, his nose flattened to appear more like a bat's, and his skin became chalk-white
His origin is tied into genetic manipulation to cure a disease. The same applies to Dr. Curt Connors who uses gene therapy and lizard DNA to help regenerate his lost arm. This results in him becoming The Lizard. Connors has already appeared in the Spider-Man films as Parker's lecturer.

The possibility is there for both Morbius and The Lizard to appear in the next film and their origins could easily be connected. Plus Peter Parker could use his scientific knowledge to help cure them as well as beat them up.

What are your thoughts? Would you like to see Spider-Man go up against a vampire and a reptile? Who could play Morbius (maybe Hellboy 2's Luke Goss)? If not those bad guys who would you like to see in the next Spider-Man film?

Dylan Dog - Our first look at Brandon Routh as the Nightmare Investigator

Here are the first photos from the Kevin Munroe helmed, Dead of Night. It is based on the horror comics by Tiziani Sclavi that feature the horror detective Dylan Dog.
Dylan Dog is played by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and the pictures do show a similarity between the comic book character and the actor. According to /Film the original character design was based on Rupert Everett - The Everett that existed before the facial reconstruction altered him almost beyond recognition!
The sickly looking character below is Sam Huntington as Dylan's undead sidekick Marcus.
Finally, we have the always cool looking Taye Diggs as the Vampire leader, Vargas.
Peter Stormare and Kurt Angle are also in the film as a pair of werewolves.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it will be any good? Is Routh a convincing leading man or is he forever linked with the mediocre Superman Returns?

On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling." Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base's general that Saya learns of her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection.

Guillermo Del Toro talks about The Strain

Author and acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro talks About Vampires, the inspiration for his forthcoming series of books, The Strain Trilogy.

The Strain

They have always been here. Vampires. In secret and in darkness. Waiting. Now their time has come.

In one week, Manhattan will be gone. In one month, the country.

In two months—the world.

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing . . .

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city—a city that includes his wife and son — before it is too late.
