Richard Feynman Plays the Bongos

Richard Feynman was an American physicist known for the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics and the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as work in particle physics (he proposed the parton model). For his contributions to the development of quantum electrodynamics, Feynman got the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965, together with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga. Feynman developed a widely used pictorial representation scheme for the mathematical expressions governing the behavior of subatomic particles, which later became known as Feynman diagrams. During his lifetime and after his death, Feynman became one of the most publicly known scientists in the world.

He assisted in the development of the atomic bomb and was a member of the panel that investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. In addition to his work in theoretical physics, Feynman has been credited with pioneering the field of quantum computing, and introducing the concept of nanotechnology (creation of devices at the molecular scale). He held the Richard Chace Tolman professorship in theoretical physics at Caltech.

Pontypool, 2009 - Movie Review

Director: Bruce McDonald
Starring: Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly

This review by Stephen Holden.

“Pontypool,” a small Canadian horror film that makes the most of its minuscule budget, is set almost entirely in the confines of a tiny radio station that operates from a church basement in rural Ontario. (The film’s title is also the name of the village that is home to the station, CLSY Radio.) Here, Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie - Nite Owl 1 in Watchmen), a growling talk-show cowboy who suggests a bottom-drawer Don Imus, holds forth each morning while swigging heavily spiked coffee. By his side are his producer, Sydney Briar (Lisa Houle), with whom he continually bickers, and Laurel Ann Drummond (Georgina Reilly), a resourceful technician who recently returned from serving in Afghanistan.

Directed by Bruce McDonald (“The Tracey Fragments”) from Tony Burgess’s screen adaptation of his novel “Pontypool Changes Everything,” the film captures the monotonous daily rituals of broadcasting from inside a studio that feels so sealed off from the outside world that nothing beyond the sound booth seems real. On this snowy Valentine’s Day morning, phoned-in reports of grisly events in the town seem as bogus as the Sunshine Chopper, a fictional traffic helicopter that is actually a truck parked on a hill.

The traffic reporter, Ken Loney (Rick Roberts), gives increasingly agitated eyewitness accounts of a mob surrounding the house of a local doctor, on top of another report of demented ice fishermen cannibalizing policemen. Because he is just a voice and never seen, they sound like an elaborate prank.

The first half of “Pontypool,” with its mixture of high-velocity banter and news flashes, suggests a deadpan spoof of “War of the Worlds,” Orson Welles’s notorious 1938 mock newscast describing a Martian invasion of New Jersey. But soon enough, the horror outside CLSY closes in on the station, and a zombielike mob arrives and begins banging on the windows.

“Pontypool” eventually makes a giant satiric leap into intellectual pretension, transforming William S. Burroughs’s notion that language is a virus into flesh-eating reality. The virus is not just any language, but English, the contagion spread through terms of endearment. To survive, Grant is forced to speak in broken French.

“Pontypool” barely develops a premise that has all kinds of implications about the mass media (talk radio in particular) and the degradation of language in a culture overrun with hyperbole, jargon, disinformation and contrived drama. But when one infected character is reduced to spouting gibberish as she suicidally hurls herself at the glass booth that has become a fortress against the zombie terror, the notion that we are all being driven mad by an incessant verbal deluge makes nasty comic sense.

Thor to be gritty and dirty says the scriptwriter

CineFOOLS have a great interview with Ashley Miller. He is the screen writer for Kenneth Branagh's adaption of Thor for Marvel.

Reading it does make me feel even happier about the project. Here are some of the main bits from it.
Are you a fan of Thor?

AM-Would you like me to pull my Simonson run out of its bags and boards? Zack had to take me down with an elephant tranq to stop me from throwing in a scene between Thor and a frog.

Is there any Thor storylines you are inspired by?

AM-So many things. Certainly, Walt Simonson's take on the character greatly informs what we brought to the script although I wouldn't say we went to a specific story from his tenure on the book. We saw part of our job as taking all the many approaches to the character over the years (including the myths) and distilling them down into a form that worked for a two-hour movie. There's a tremendous amount of ground to cover, so inspiration has to come from everywhere.

As a writer what would you like to bring to the characters in the Thor Saga?

AM-Grit. Not in the sense that you'd want to see a generic "dark" take on Thor, but in the sense that you want to feel Thor's rage when he rages. You want to see him fight like hell, and take as much he dishes out -- maybe more. You want to have a visceral reaction to the guy, and what happens to him. You don't want his adventures to be clean and antiseptic. You want to see the dirt, and grime and blood. You want to feel every bone crunching moment of every fight. And when he unleashes the storm, you want to feel like you're seeing the power of a GOD at work.

The best example I can give you is the end of Ultimates 2. When Thor shows up and kicks ass, he shows up and kicks ass. He isn't screwing around. There's a certain brutal, cock-eyed realism to Thor in that moment (and through that book in general) that I really resonate to and want to expand on.

As most people will want to see Asgard does it feature prominently in the script or will it mostly be in our world?

AM-Marvel's official description gives you a pretty good idea of what the divide looks like.

With all the Marvel films converging do you have to write with a bigger story in mind? Will you be involved with any other Marvel comic/film writers? E.g J Michael Stratzynski?

AM-We definitely wrote with the bigger story in mind, or at least the bigger universe. Our script is very firmly rooted in the Marvel film world. We were constantly looking for ways to connect Thor to the other movies and heroes, even if they were simply in passing. Part of grounding Thor in the world is grounding him in the specific, fictional world he inhabits. How many of those references and connections make it to the final product are beyond our control, but they are everywhere.

I'll also tell you the nicest thing about working for Marvel, as a fan. You never have to defend the character to the people who own him. You never have to explain to them why Thor is cool, or what he can do. They are as likely as you are to come up with some awesome bit of obscure continuity and pitch it as a story or character element. It's a very writer friendly place.
It is great to see that a fan of Thor is writing the screenplay. I also like the sound of the fights in that we will see the dirt, grime and blood. If they can make it like that then it should be amazing. Can Chris Hemsworth as Thor pull this off?

How do you feel about the Thor film? How can they tie it into the Iron Man film and other Marvel films? What look do you want Thor to have - classic Marvel or the Ultimate version?

New Alien film will be a prequel

Collider was able to confirm the fact that the new Alien film will be a prequel from producer Tony Scott, who also confirmed that Carl Rinsch will be directing. Here's an excerpt of what the producer had to say.
Collider: 20th Century Fox is talking about remaking or redoing the original Alien. What's going on with that?

Tony Scott: Yes, Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien. He's one of our directors at our company.

Collider: I'm going to be blunt about this. Fox has not been doing a great job recently with their movies. They haven't been an artist friendly studio. Are you guys going to have some creative control and make this a kick-ass film?

Tony: Yes! But Fox is our home. They finance our production company.
I'm glad it will be a prequel and not a remake of the first film. What do you want to see in an Alien prequel?

The new Doctor's new companion has been cast

A virtually unknown actress as been picked to partner new Time Lord, the virtually unknown actor, Matt Smith in the latest series of Doctor Who, to be broadcast later this year. Karen Gillan, 21, will play the Doctor's assistant in the BBC's prime-time sci-fi drama.

It is thought Gillan, who played a Roman soothsayer in an episode in the last series of Doctor Who, was chosen so as not to overshadow Smith - the youngest Doctor ever - in his first season as David Tennant's replacement.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat told the BBC that Gillan is funny, clever, gorgeous and sexy: "A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her, too."

Gillan, an alumnus of London's Italia Conti drama school, has appeared in Scottish detective drama Rebus and Channel 4 fashion drama Stacked. She will also appear in British horror film Outcast (that's the one starring James Nesbitt that I've mentioned a while back), which is in production.

After her unveiling, Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion - I just can't wait to get started. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it."

Grant Morrison talks about Batman And Robin

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's new comic book series, Batman And Robin, looks like it will be great.

The debut of the series follows the events of Batman R.I.P., Final Crisis, and Battle for the Cowl in which the original Batman, Bruce Wayne, apparently died at the hands of DC Comics villain Darkseid and features the winner of the Battle for the Cowl as the new Batman. The conclusion to Battle of the Cowl shows Dick Grayson becoming the new Batman, while Damian Wayne becomes the new Robin.

I love both the creators involved and now that Dick Grayson (Robin, Nightwing) has now taken on the mantle of the Batman we should see some cool wisecracking action.

io9 have some more news on the feel of the series. Grant Morrison describes it below.

The only way I can explain the tone is that I had this idea of recapitulating the television show in a certain way... I was thinking of what other aspects of Batman are completely out of favor - that people tend to hate and don't seem to work anymore. The Batman 60s TV show was one of those. Obviously it was camp and a product of its time. But when I was a kid I thought it was really serious. [laughs] So I wanted to take some of that bizarre, psychedelic feel. I wanted to take the idea of very short, punchy stories that just kind of existed on their own terms. Rather than Batman RIP, which was a big, epic story that had a lot of secret subtext and hidden meanings and stuff, these are just crazy stories that are pretty upfront.

It was taking that aspect of the Batman TV show and then trying it in with David Lynch and Twin Peaks. [laughs] And creepy European cartoons and marionettes and stuff like that. That bad dreamlike feeling of a Marilyn Manson video in the '90s, or like Chris Cunningham's video for 'Windowlicker'. [laughs] Again, it was about trying to fuse those two things together into a bad trip, Lewis Carroll kind of world.

Morrison details that the tone of the series will be a "reverse" of the normal dynamic between Batman and Robin, with, "a more light-hearted and spontaneous Batman and a scowling, bad ass Robin." Morrison also divulges that this is a continuation of his previous work on the Batman character, although this is a different title than what he wrote previously. "This is the next book in what will be a 5-volume series beginning [with] Batman & Son, but it can be read on its own too. Batman and Robin welcomes new readers!" Morrison also said that even though the series deals with familiar identities, the series features all new villains and situations, but also revealed that some villains were glimpsed in Batman #666.

When asked if the series would deal with the new Batman being unable to fill Bruce Wayne's proverbial shoes, Morrison answered, "When I started out I had that in mind, and I thought we'd finally prove that nobody else could be Batman. But I do believe certain aspects of RIP were about how nobody but this guy could be Batman. I think with this, it's fun to start by seeing what happens when someone else tries. Sometimes it goes wrong, and sometimes it goes really well. Some of the things these guys do are things that Bruce Wayne would never have thought to do". In regards to using Frank Quitely as the artist, Morrison described the difference between this particular collaboration with previous ones, specifically on JLA Earth-2 and All Star Superman. For instance, Morrison asked Quitely to choreograph the flow of the action in his own way, rather than through Morrison's normally heavily detailed scripts.

Morrison said, "I've asked [Quitely] to re-introduce the much-maligned sound effects to superhero comics, but in a way that integrates them more closely with the art." He also described Batman and Robin as, "a shorter, pacier collaboration so we've tried to keep it looser and more open than All Star Superman.

When given the question about a possible appearance by the Joker, Morrison said, "I think we'd all love to see [Quitely's] take on the Joker, so yeah, I'd like to think I can make that happen in some way."

What do you think about that? Will you be reading it?

The comic is due out next week.

Clifton Collins Jr may be in Thor

It looks as if J J Abrams Star Trek may have another link to Kenneth Branagh's Thor film after Chris Hemsworth was cast as Thor.

Clifton Collins Jr., who as the Romulan miner Ayel helped to kill Hemsworth’s character, George Kirk, appears to now be vying for a part alongside Hemsworth in the upcoming Marvel Studios film according to MTV.

“Studying my ass off for ‘Thor,’ gonna be a late night, well worth the loss of sleep!” Collins wrote Wednesday on Twitter. “Brewing big pot of joe, hitting ‘Thor’ hard this mornin!”

He also said that he would be heading into an audition for the part later that day, but didn’t specify which part he would be trying out for.

The question is what character would he be auditioning for? Possibily Fandral or Hogun from The Warriors Three. My feeling is that it will be for the part of Hogun based on the recent casting call announcement.
Official Casting Call for Hogun

[HOGUN]Male. ASIAN / SOUTH EAST ASIAN / MONGOLIAN / EAST INDIAN. Late 20s to mid 30s. Grim, stoic, fearless. A man of few words who lives for battle...SUPPORTING.
Clifton Collins Jr is one of those actors who always does top quality work. He was great in The Last Castle. Do you think Collins Jr would work as Hogun (he's the one on the right in the picture below)? If not Hogun who else could be play? Do you think Beta Ray Bill will be in the film?

Paul Verhoeven has The Surrogate

The Dutch director, Paul Verhoeven (Black Book, Total Recall, Robocop, Hollow Man, Starship Troopers) has signed on to develop and direct The Surrogate, a thriller for 20th Century Fox.

It is based on the 2004 book by Kathryn Mackel, the story centers on a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane.

The description from the book is "Kyle and Bethany Dolan reel from years of infertility, miscarriages, and finally, a disastrous hysterectomy. They are desperate to find the perfect surrogate mother to carry their last frozen embryo. Sable Lynde, a computer genius with a dark history, is desperate to escape her own inner demons, her dark past, and a dangerous loan shark. Sable assumes the identity of a surrogacy candidate so perfect that the Dolans welcome her into their family without reservation. As the pregnancy progresses, the dangers of Sable’s deception escalate until the unthinkable happens–Sable’s dark demons spill out into the Dolans’ lives–even as she lies in a coma. A thrill-ride of suspense and terror, this novel leads readers to a breathtaking climax."

The question is will this be good Verhoeven or Showgirls Verhoeven directing it?

Danny McBride is Hench

Warner Bros. has picked up Hench, planning to develop the AIT/Planet Lar graphic novel by Adam Beechen and Mario Bello as a comedy vehicle for Danny McBride.

McBride will play a football player who suffers a career-ending injury and needs a job. He signs on as henchman to a successful villain.

The fine line between hero and villain is just another of longtime super-villain henchman Mike Fulton's many scars. Now, faced with a terrible choice that could mean life and death for heroes, villains, his family, and himself, Mike ponders just how his normal life went so crazy.

I've heard about this GN but never actual read it. I liked the concept though.

According to Variety, McBride will write the script with Shawn Harwell.

Chevy Chase will fix the Hot Tub Time Machine

EW has the news that Chevy Chase has been cast opposite John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Craig Robinson (The Office) in United Artist's Hot Tub Time Machine. It also stars Lizzy Caplan, Crispin Glover, Lyndsy Fonseca, and Clark Duke.

That is the comedy in which three grown-up guys return to the hot tub they once partied in, discover it's a time machine, and are transported back to their days of glory.

Apparantly Chase Chase plays a mysterious repairman who dispenses pearls of wisdom and may or may not be behind the metaphysical road trip.

Steve Pink (Accepted) is directing the movie, currently in production, based on a screenplay by Josh Heald.

Sounds to me like Chase's character will be similar to the one Christopher Walken played in that Adam Sandler film, Remote.

Jinja tells me Chase has been great in Chuck and I hope this film is a good one for him as I miss the funny Chevy Chase from Fletch. When did he get so old?

Beautiful Darling - Trailer - Candy came from out on the island-

Beautiful Darling, a documentary film, pays tribute to the short but influential life of an extraordinary person -- the actress Candy Darling, born James Slattery in a Long Island suburb in 1944. Drawn to the feminine from childhood, by the mid-Sixties James had become Candy, a gorgeous, blonde aspiring actress and well-known downtown New York figure. Candy's career took her through the raucous and revolutionary Off-off-Broadway theater scene and into Andy Warhol's legendary Factory. There she became close to Warhol and starred in two Factory movies that still shock and amuse today: Flesh and Women in Revolt. Candy used her Warhol fame to land further film roles, and her admirer Tennessee Williams cast her in his play Small Craft Warnings. She dreamed of becoming a Hollywood star, but tragically died of lymphoma in the early Seventies, at only twenty-nine.

Candy's beauty, humor, and early death, the guts it took to live as a woman, the glamorous parties and the famous friends -- most of all the strength of will she demonstrated in her remarkable act of self-creation -- moved those who knew her in her lifetime and continue to gather fans today. It's a story of wild, creative times and of audacious people, but one that has a theme inspiring for anyone, anywhere: whatever the obstacles, be true to yourself.

Director: James Rasin

Cast: Andy Warhol, Holly Woodlawn, John Waters

Legion - The end of days in the style of a war movie?

Legion is the supernatural thriller starring Paul Bettany as the archangel Michael, who is all that stands between mankind and an apocalypse after God has lost faith in humanity. But the Almighty apparently hasn't lost all hope -- a child is on the way who is the second coming of Christ, and a group of strangers who recognize the fact must band together to save it.

I mentioned it back in March.

Now Quiet Earth have some more news on the style of the film and a detailed synopsis.

The films director Scott Stewart said "I conceived LEGION more as a comic book action movie than a straight horror film. Despite the obvious horror elements, my primary influence when writing it was less DAWN OF THE DEAD or 28 DAYS LATER, and more the original TERMINATOR with its blend of intense action and inventive mythology.

Stylistically, I intend to ground the fantastic nature of the story in a gritty and realistic visual style. I want the audience to feel like they've been dropped right in the middle of the action, so they, like the characters in the film, experience the terror and chaos in a very direct and visceral way. In that regard, the best visual comparison to LEGION are not other horror films but contemporary war films like PLATOON and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN."

That sounds very cool and a great way to go in making this stand out from the supernatural crowd.

Now for the synopsis:
Without warning, on the night of December 23rd, the prisoners inside a Los Angeles jail go berserk, tearing each other apart. Only one is left standing: MIKE (Paul Bettany) . Meanwhile, in the tiny Mojave desert town of Paradise Falls, JEEP HANSEN (Lucas Black going back to his American Gothic roots) awakens from yet another fever dream and begins to draw. His walls are covered with nightmarish visions of fantastic creatures and heroes, including demon lord BELIAL and a mysterious figure... who looks an awful lot like MIKE.

Later that day while Jeep is working on a car the sky darkens. a mysterious black car arrives and the elderly GLADYS emerges. Inside the diner, BOB (
Dennis Quaid), pregnant actress CHARLIE (Adrianne Palicki), the LYMANS, cook PERCY (Charles S. Dutton), and suspicious patron KYLE (Tyrese Gibson) watch Gladys eat a rare and bloody steak. Gladys then revels herself to be a hideous creature and attacks Howard and Bob. Kyle kills her with his .45. The diner is surrounded by thousands of flies, the power goes out and the group is trapped inside.

Mike arrives in a police car and distributes weapons to the group. He reveals that they are witnessing the first signs of a war between humans and a horde of the devil's minions. The demon-creatures converge on the diner and attack. The group fights back. While awaiting the next onslaught, Jeep finds a transmission on the radio explaining that all of human kind is under siege by demons. Apparently Las Vegas is the only haven left. Amidst the chaos, Charlie's water suddenly breaks and Audrey helps her deliver a baby boy.
Legion is set to star Dennis Quaid, Paul Bettany, Tyrese Gibson, Kate Walsh, Kevin Durand and Lucas Black.

I really like the sound of this. The story and, more importantly, the style tick all the right boxes for me. Paul Bettany as an archangel will be good and it puts me in mind of a bigger budgeted Prophecy - now it would be good if Christopher Walken had a cameo in this one.

Do you like the sound of this film? What do you want to see in it?

The Final Destination - Poster for fourth in the series

This is the film that was called Final Destination: Death Trip 3D, but it has since been renamed to The Final Destination.

Eric Bress and David R. Ellis, who wrote and directed Final Destination 2, are back for the fourth which is due out in August.

This one starts out at a Nascar race so lots of crashes for people to narrowly avoid Death and then later die in various wacky ways. As it is going to be in 3D the crashes should be pretty good to watch.

Quite a nice poster. Thanks to Ugo for posting it.

Jon Favreau talks War Machine and Whiplash

Jon Favreau chatted to Empire about what we can expect to see in the sequel to Iron Man.

"Tony's expected to be a role model and I don't think he's ready to be one. He's under a great deal of pressure and when you're under pressure, I think you find outlets for that. That's one of the tensions of the film: it's one thing to say you're Iron Man, and another thing to actually become Iron Man."

He then went on to talk about Jim Rhodes (Don Cheadle this time round) putting on his own armoured suit as War Machine. "Rhodesy is definitely stepping up in this film. Let me put it this way: Tony's not the only person with technology in the film."

Mickey Rourke, who appears as new Iron Man nemesis Whiplash, had this to say "I'm having the time of my life!" he enthused about joining the Iron Man franchise. "It's been really brutal, because my Iron Man suit weighs 23lb. It's sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison."

Iron Man 2 is due out on 7 May 2010.

I really hope this is going to be as good as the first one. Still not sure about Scarlett Johanson as the Black Widow.

Avatar - Concept art from James Cameron's Sci-Fi wonder

The good folks over at Marketsaw were given permission by Fox to publish these lovely pieces of concept art from James Cameron's highly anticipated film, Avatar.

The images are from a book called The Art of Avatar which has a forward by Peter Jackson.

/Film describe the above picture as "This one appears to show action from a set piece rather near the end of proceedings. Fleeing in the foreground is another one of the futuristic flying machines (most likely the Dragon Gunship, I think) and behind it is one of the native beasts of Pandora. This one, I think, is a Bansheeray."

The picture below shows more of the mech suit that had been previously posted. That could be Sam Worthington's character in the suit.
This artwork is lovely and to think that we will be seeing it all in 3D is mind blowing. It does look like Cameron may really be changing the face of cinema as we know it.

What do you think of the concept art? Excited?

Robert Downey Jr is Oobermind

I first mentioned this back in February. Now Variety have the news that Robert Downey Jr. and Tina Fey have been case in a 3D Animated feature for DreamWorks called Oobermind.

Downey will voice a supervillain who finds life a little dull after vanquishing his good-guy rival Metro Man. The superhero-themed film, based on a script (previously called "Master Mind") from Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, will open 5th November 2010.

I do like the sound of this and Downey Jr and Fay are both quality actors. I just hope it is a bit better than recent DreamWorks animated films (Kung-Fu Panda, Shrek 2 & 3 etc) as they have not been too good. Presumably the name was changed from Master Mind as that character exists in the DC Comics world.

Looks as if Dr Horrible will have some company with a villain being the lead.

Diary of the Dead, 2007 - Quick Movie Review

Director: George Romero
Starring: Michelle Morgan, Joshua Close, Shawn Roberts, Amy Ciupak Lalonde
Running Time: 95 minutes

This review by Paul.

I caught this recently on TV. It was late, I was a tad tipsy (day before my birthday) and thought 'why not?'.

Now dont get me wrong, I don't usually like Zombie pics. Not that I dislike them, I just dislike Zombies. they scare me big time. Proper. Can't think of anything worse.

So I was feeling kinda bold when I decided to watch this, especially when the opener said it was Romaro's most gory film EVER, the most SHOCKING SCENES EVER MADE.

End up watching this and you will be very disappointed. I was looking forward to a shockgorefest but this failed to deliver. I didn't even wet myself once. It's difficult to recall what actually happened as the film was so bland. Considering the pedigree of the man I was surprised.

I know this is not a comprehensive review but that's because I dont have anything to say about it.

It was a non event.

The Random - Roadkill, Alien remake, Paul, Wichita, Castlevania, Tomb Raider, Al Pacino as Dr Death, Barney's Version, The Breed

- John Stockwell has signed to direct the action comedy Roadkill, written by Nick Ball and John Niven. Bill Perkins is producing and financing the indie via his Lleju Prods."Roadkill" revolves around two amateur private detectives who take on more than they anticipated when they agree to protect a high-end escort being pursued by a female assassin. While on the run, they discover what could be a government conspiracy.

- According to Bloody-Disgusting, Fox is developing a new origin story for the 1979 sci-fi classic, Alien. The site had originally reported that the project was going to be a straight-up remake of the film, but shortly thereafter the story was updated with information that another source indicated the new project was going to be an origin story and not a remake. The site was reporting that Michael Costigan, Tony Scott and his brother Ridley Scott, who directed the 1979 film, are all attached to produce, with Carl Rinsch set to direct.

- Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Jane Lynch are joining the cast of Paul. Starring in the Paul are Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) and Nick Frost. The film will be directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad). The script, which was written by Frost and Pegg, follows two sci-fi lovers who find their "conspiracy dreams" coming to fruition when they visit an escaped alien at Area 51. Seth Rogen will be voicing the alien.

- According to Variety, Tom Cruise will most likely do the 20th Century Fox action comedy Wichita as his next film. He will star with Cameron Diaz in this movie that will be directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line). Fox hopes to release the film in the summer of 2010. Mangold is presently rewriting the screenplay with Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island). The story follows a secret agent (Cruise) who finds himself coming into and out of the life of a single woman.

The long-gestating film adaptation of the Castlevania video game is not happening says Bloody Disgusting. Paul W.S. Anderson and Ian Jeffers were writing the adaptation that originally had Sylvain White attached to direct. While the film had been out to other directors in recent months, the project has now officially been shelved for now.

Producer Dan Lin talked briefly about the upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise to About.com "It's a great origin story that we're going to tell. A very character-oriented story. I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies...I would say it's like Terminator - character-driven action. I think for me the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character" says Lin.
So they are going back to the beginning like "Batman Begins" or "Casino Royale" in order to try and re-establish the brand. Rumour has it Megan Fox was up for the role of Lara Croft.

Al Pacino is in negotiations to star in the Jack Kevorkian biopic "You Don't Know Jack" says The Hollywood Reporter. Kevorkian, also known as Dr. Death, assisted in more than 150 cases of suicide and had beaten the state court system in Michigan numerous times, but was finally convicted after he willingly sent a videotape of himself euthanizing a terminally ill man to "60 Minutes." He was convicted of second-degree murder in 1999 and is serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison in Michigan. The film will trace his rise as he builds his infamous "Mercy Machine," conducts his first assisted suicide, and starts a media frenzy with his epic legal battles defending a patient's right to die. Barry Levinson is set to direct the film.

Dustin Hoffman will star alongside Paul Giamatti in the indie drama Barney's Version reports Variety. Hoffman will play a retired cop and father of the story's title character -- who has led a reckless life highlighted by three marriages, two children and status as a "person of interest" in the mysterious disappearance of his friend.

Arrow in the Head have the news that Jean Claude Van Damme is joining a horror film called The Breed. Van Damme said that "it's set in a village where strange things happen," but he wouldn't say anymore, "you know, let the movie speak for itself!"

UPDATED: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - Trailer for Werner Herzog's new film starring Cage

More Cage action. Watch him shout, point and look confused.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is the new Werner Herzog film that continues from Harvey Keitel's version. Apparantly it is not a remake.

Judging by this trailer they haven't really any idea what they wanted to do with the film. All in all it looks a bit of a mess.

It stars Nic Cage, Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes and, wait for it, Xzibit.

Remember, Nic Cage and Eva Mendes last starred together in Ghost Rider.

Cage's best acting role before this was posted recently (you have to watch it), but this may take first place.

Update: The video should now work again

What did you think of that? Will The Sorcerer's Apprentice or Kick-Ass finally lift the bad film curse that Nic Cage seems to currently be under?

A Nightmare on Elm Street - First look at Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy

Yes that is Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger before the scarring and glove. It appears to be part of the origin scene of the character.

The scene apparently featured Freddy playing hide and seek with the kids in the playground as they stole his hat and gloves. Every now and again, he'd pick up a gardening tool with his right hand and chase the kids around.

JoBlo had this and a few other exclusive photos.

Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema has hired veteran screenwriter Wesley Strick to pen the relaunch of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series.

The original Nightmare on Elm Street was written and directed by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The new project will keep the high school setting and delve deeper in the psychology of nightmares and Freddy Krueger himself.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is due out on 16th April 2010.

Pandorum - New trailer for sci-fi space weirdness

This is looking rather good and a tad suspenseful.

It stars Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Antje Traue, Cung Le, Norman Reedus and Cam Gigandet.

Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It's pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the spacecraft. They can't remember anything - who are they, what is their mission? The only way out of the chamber is a dark and narrow airshaft. Corporal Bower (Foster), the younger of the two, crawls inside, while the other, Lt. Payton (Quaid), stays behind for guidance on a radio transmitter. As Bower ventures deeper and deeper into the ship, he begins to uncover a terrifying reality. Slowly the spacecraft's shocking and deadly secrets come unraveled, and the astronauts realize that the survival of mankind hinges on their actions.

I just hope it doesn't end up as some predictable bit of space horror. At the moment it is looking like a mix of Dead Space, Event Horizon, Alien and a few others.

What do you think the story is about? Does the trailer grab you?

The Thorn in the Heart - Michel Gondry's new documentary has been picked up by the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope Laboratories

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American distribution rights to Michel Gondry's documentary, The Thorn in the Heart ("L'Epine dans le Coeur"), a personal look at the life of Gondry family matriarch, his aunt Suzette Gondry, and her relationship with her son, Jean-Yves. The Thorn in the Heart had its world premiere screening in the official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Oscilloscope will open the film in theaters, with a DVD and digital release to follow.

Michel examines Suzette's years as a school teacher and her life in rural France. During the course of filming the documentary, Michel unearths new family stories and uses his camera to explore them in a subtle and sensitive way. The film was produced and financed by Partizan Films.

Michel: "So I called up my best friend Etienne and told him, 'Guess who's distributing my documentary about my aunt?' and he said, 'who?' and I said, 'MCA from Beastie Boys' and Etienne said, 'The Beastie Boy bought your Aunt's documentary?! Get the f*** out of here!' and I said, 'Yeah!!!'"

Adam Yauch, head of Oscilloscope Laboratories said, "Michel is one of the most innovative and creative people in the world. So it's great to see him making a sincere doc on a subject that is so close to his heart."
