Nicolas Cage to be the big bad in The Green Hornet

Stephen Chow is out so they are looking for a new Kato. Seth Rogen has been getting in shape to play the titular hero and Cameron Diaz was recently announced to star in the Michel Gondry directed film that may be funny, may be dramatic, may be whatever as they are still unsure what direction to take the film in.

Now Variety announced that Nicolas Cage - he of the pointing, shouting, twitching and variable hair - is in the early stages of playing the Gangster Villain of the piece.

I know in the past I have given the Cagester some stick, but I do like him. It is just that lately he has made some naff decisions with regards scripts and the way to play the characters he portrays. He seems to have been just going through the motions and become a parody of his former self.

Maybe, just maybe, with The Sorcerer's Apprentice and now this he may get himself back on the cool map. All depends on the length of his hair when he plays the part. I really must write up my theory on Cage's hair length versus the quality of his films.

Jay & Seth vs The Apocalypse

Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse, was an Internet short scripted by Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg (“Superbad”) and co-starring Jay Baruchel. The idea was to put the so-called trailer online and build interest for a feature film (the trailer is below)

It looks as if the idea worked as Mandate Pictures secured the rights and started making plans to bring “Jay and Seth” to the big screen in January last year.

MTV News spoke with Baruchel on the set of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and asked him for an update

“They’re working on the ['Jay and Seth'] script right now,” said Baruchel. “All the concepts are there, all the beats are there, the treatment is there and a movie with us in it—we’ll improvise half the thing anyway, so it doesn’t matter.”

“‘Jay and Seth’ will at the very least happen in the next year and a half for sure,” he added. “Seth and Evan are working on The Green Hornet right now, and that’s just a big, massive undertaking that’s taking up all their time and effort."

“The minute [‘Hornet’] is finished, we go into production on one of two things,” Baruchel said. “We’ll either do ‘Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse’ or we’ll do this hockey movie that Evan and I wrote called ‘The Goon.’”

Jay & Seth sounds and looks like it could be quite a cool comedy. It's about two friends stuck together in an apartment after the end of the world.

When the Green Hornet is complete what film do you want them to work on next - The Goon of Jay & Seth?

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 before The Lone Ranger

Jerry Bruckheimer who is currently working on The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time spoke to Coming Soon about the Disney films The Lone Ranger and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Johnny Depp will be back as Captain Jack and is also meant to be playing Tonto

It looks as if Disney are focused on getting the next installement of "Pirates" sorted out.

"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," said Bruckheimer. "A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."

It makes sense for Disney to focus on a new Pirates movie. It is an almost guaranteed money maker so they will want to keep on mining that for all it is worth. I hope they take it back to the simpler kind of tale like the first film. It also looks as if Depp will be the only main star returning.

Bruckheimer shared that the original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and he said it was "funny" and a "whole new way of going" although he wouldn't share more than that.

Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game BioShock, Bruckheimer was aked if there was a chance he might return for a fourth movie. "You never know," he admitted. "He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back, but it's kind of up to him."

Bruckheimer was then asked about what was happening with The Lone Ranger as, apart from Depp, no casting for the lead character has been announced (although Matthew McConaughey had been rumoured). "Wait until they got a director and Disney says to go make the movie." This means previous rumours that Prince of Persia director Mike Newell was in talks to direct the movie are untrue. "We don't have a director yet. He's too busy on 'Prince of Persia' right now," Bruckheimer confirmed.

Footage of Cage filming The Sorcerer's Apprentice

I recently posted some footage of Afred Molina and Monica Belluci filming in New York. Now the excellent chaps over at Hey U Guys sent me this footage of Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel filming the live action version of Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice coming in 2010. It was just off of Times Square on 7th Avenue.

There also seems to be a thing developing for the Sorcerer's in the film (Cage and Molina) to be sat in cars with their apprentice (Baruchel and Toby Kebbell) as these photos show.

Not sure why but I'm getting a good feeling about this film. It could be the one that breaks Cage's current run of not very good films.

First look at Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell in The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Stitch Kingdom had a visit to the set of Nicolas Cage's new film The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

The film is based on the poem/Fantasia segment of the same name — Cage is the Sorcerer and Alfred Molina portrays Horvath, Cage’s nemesis and fellow sorcerer. In the film, Horvath picks up a sidekick in the form of professional illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell).

UPDATED: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - Trailer for Werner Herzog's new film starring Cage

More Cage action. Watch him shout, point and look confused.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is the new Werner Herzog film that continues from Harvey Keitel's version. Apparantly it is not a remake.

Judging by this trailer they haven't really any idea what they wanted to do with the film. All in all it looks a bit of a mess.

It stars Nic Cage, Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes and, wait for it, Xzibit.

Remember, Nic Cage and Eva Mendes last starred together in Ghost Rider.

Cage's best acting role before this was posted recently (you have to watch it), but this may take first place.

- Universal has apparantly confirmed that a new Hannibal Lector film will be made, with the Oscar-winning actor and director Ridley Scott both on board, according to Digital Spy. "As far as we know, [this project] is alive," a Universal spokeswoman said. "Anthony Hopkins and Ridley Scott are both very committed. We like what we've got, and the revised script is really, really good."

- Monica Bellucci has joined the cast of The Sorcerer's Apprentice for Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Productions reports Variety. The story revolves around a sorcerer who recruits and trains a young protege to help him fight the forces of darkness in modern-day Manhattan. Bellucci will play Veronica, a sorceress and the long-lost love of Nicolas Cage's character, Balthazar Blake. Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer and Toby Kebbell also star.

- Twitch have new photos of Chow Yun-Fat as the ancient philosopher in the upcoming biopic Confucius.

- Christopher Lloyd has joined the cast of Piranha 3D according to Bloodydisgusting.

- Lindsay Lohan another job. She will star in the indie fantasy comedy The Other Side alongside Woody Harrelson, Giovanni Ribisi, Dave Matthews and Alanis Morissette. That's what Variety have to say about it.

- Stride Gum has offered King of Kong star Steve Wiebe $10,001 in quarters if he can beat the King Kong record at E3 - PRN

- George Lucas gives Vulture his brief review of Star Trek: “I liked Star Trek growing up and I’ve seen the new one. It’s good. I liked it.”

- Spider-Man 4 will film a small portion of the movie at Dundalk, Ireland’s massive wind turbine - dundalkdemocrat

- Jason Statham will star in the $40 million action thriller The Killer Elite reports Variety. Based on real events and Ranulph Fiennes' best-selling novel "The Featherman", the story follows a group of former British special forces members who are being hunted by assassins.Statham will play a former Navy Seal who is forced out of retirement to save his closest friend.

Accident on the set of The Sorcerer's Apprentice

While filming a chase scene for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice near Times Square, a stunt driver lost control of his Ferrari, clipped a light pole, and crashed into a Sbarro’s. The light pole fell on a man, and a lady standing nearby was knocked to the ground.

Street closing notices posted by the police indicated the shoot was for the Nicolas Cage film, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

The scene required a Ferrari to pass several vehicles in pursuit of a Mercedes as it drove down Seventh Avenue, which was closed to traffic for the filming.

Mark Watkins, a tourist from Birmingham, England, watched the live action chase from the top of the new TKTS booth.

"A black Ferrari and a silver Mercedes were chasing each other," he said.

"The Ferrari took a route down the center of the road, swerving between cars. The Mercedes took the outside lanes.

"The Ferrari took a sharp right to the left and lost it, swerving across the lanes, taking out a lamppost and a news stand.

"One lady was knocked to the ground and a lamppost landed directly on top of a chap."

Another tourist, Aimee Dodds of New Zealand, said she was "watching the Ferrari weave through some [stunt] taxis.

"As the Ferrari took a right turn past one of the taxis, he took a wide turn and slammed straight into the Sbarro."

One of the victims was not associated with the movie. It was not clear whether the other was also a bystander. Both were taken to Bellevue Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

A customer who was inside the restaurant said a manager inside "told a couple to get back."

"Next thing you know it jumps the sidewalk and smashes the door," she said. "The manager just started freaking out and told everyone to get out."

The question is, will this be the most interesting thing about Nicholas Cage's new film or will he break his current run of not very good films?

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter Amber Heard and Odette Yustman will be starring in And Soon the Darkness. The film is a remake of a 1970 British thriller and it's being co-produced and co-financed by Studio Canal. Set in Argentina the film follows two girls from America who take a bike-riding trip in a far off part of the country. Eventually one of them goes missing and the other must find her before it gets dark.

Danny Boyle has denied reports that he will direct a remake of Chan-wook Park's "Lady Vengeance" reports MTV News. "No I was never going to do that. I don't know where that story came from" says Boyle. A rep later told the site that Boyle being linked to helm the next JAmes Bond film is also untrue - "While Danny says he always has and always will enjoy the Bond movies he has no plans to direct one. Danny is naturally flattered to be thought of"" The denials come as the rumor emerged today that Boyle has been asked by Sony Pictures to helm the remake of "My Fair Lady".

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ("The Lives of Others") is in talks to direct Tom Cruise-led drama "The 28th Amendment" for Warner Bros. Pictures reports the trades. The drama revolves around a U.S. president who discovers the existence of a secret cabal that runs the government and wants him dead.

Jay Roach's comedy "Dinner for Schmucks" is finally getting into production says Variety.
A remake of Francis Veber's 1998 French comedy "Le Diner des cons", the project suffered a number of setbacks when original star Sacha Baron Cohen had to pull out. Steve Carell and Paul Rudd have now cleared their schedules for the project when it kicks off shooting in October.

MGM has acquired Charles Vignola, Kevin Marcus and Bradley Marcus' original comedy screenplay "Once Upon a Time ..." says The Hollywood Reporter. "Once's" humorous quest story plays with fairy-tale convention in the vein of the "Shrek" movies and "The Princess Bride."

Big Rich Films has optioned Owen Sheers' WW2 novel "Resistance" says Variety. Amit Gupta will write and direct the pic, which is set in an alternative 1944 where Russia has fallen to Nazi Germany and the D-Day landings have failed. With Britain now half-occupied by German forces, the women in an isolated Welsh border valley awake one morning to discover all their husbands have mysteriously disappeared.

A biopic of maverick auto executive John Z. DeLorean is in the works reports Variety. The story will chronicle DeLorean's rise and fall as a young executive VP at General Motors where he developed the Pontiac GTO and Firebird, along with the creation of his own company and the DeLorean DMC-12 famous for its "Back to the Future" appearance. In 1982 he was arrested on charges of drug trafficking to help his faltering auto company but was later freed two years later after a court ruled he was a victim of government entrapment.

Alfred Molina ("Spider-Man 2," "Chocolat") is set to star as an evil magician in the Disney tentpole fantasy "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" says The Hollywood Reporter. The story centers on an average college student (Jay Baruchel) who is reluctantly recruited to work for a sorcerer named Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage).

Screen Gems has apparently ditched its plans for a remake of the classic 80's vampire feature Fright Night reports STYD.The studio apparently couldn't find a script they liked after fielding several pitches, and so the update has been shelved for now. The move comes not long after a remake of the vampire western Near Dark was also put on hold.

Nicholas Cage to be Sorcerer to Jay Baruchel's Sorcerer's Apprentice. Could it be Magic? Computer says no!

Earlier on I mentioned that maybe Nicholas Cage's latest film, Knowing, could turn around his recent spell of dreadful movies. If it does then that's all good. Unfortunately, whatever good it brings to Cage will instantly be destroyed by starring in Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Inspired by the classic Mickey Mouse animated sequence from Disney’s 1940 classic Fantasia, the film tells the story of a powerful sorcerer, played by Nicolas Cage, who seeks out an apprentice in modern day New York City. Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) is to direct the Jerry Bruckheimer production.

Can you see where this is going? Just imagine Cage as the Sorcerer. He'll be doing all his Elvis style hand and arm waving as he casts a spell, he'll be as giddy as a school girl picking out just the right wig to wear as the powerful magic user (will it be long or short for this one - I think long) and he will unleash all the ticks and grimaces he can muster Mister. It's also not clear if Cage is going to be playing a modern day sorcerer or an old school medieval one who travels through time to modern day New York. If he is medieval then you can imagine the hilarious consequences his all powerful Sorcery will cause.

Jay Baruchel (Fanboys, Tropic Thunder) is in talks to play the lead role in Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.He was cool in Tropic Thunder and looked as if he was going to break out into the big leagues. However, being involved in this one may not be the best decision.

Mind you it may actually not be that bad. As long as they get a good script it just might work. Let's see what I can dig up...who is writing it...oh!

The film was scripted by Superman IV: The Quest for Peace screenwriters Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, with a rewrite by Bedtime Stories scribe Matt Lopez.

It does not bode well.

Variety have more on the story. How will Cage chew up the scenes in this one? Could it be good?
