The Thorn in the Heart - Michel Gondry's new documentary has been picked up by the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope Laboratories

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has acquired North American distribution rights to Michel Gondry's documentary, The Thorn in the Heart ("L'Epine dans le Coeur"), a personal look at the life of Gondry family matriarch, his aunt Suzette Gondry, and her relationship with her son, Jean-Yves. The Thorn in the Heart had its world premiere screening in the official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Oscilloscope will open the film in theaters, with a DVD and digital release to follow.

Michel examines Suzette's years as a school teacher and her life in rural France. During the course of filming the documentary, Michel unearths new family stories and uses his camera to explore them in a subtle and sensitive way. The film was produced and financed by Partizan Films.

Michel: "So I called up my best friend Etienne and told him, 'Guess who's distributing my documentary about my aunt?' and he said, 'who?' and I said, 'MCA from Beastie Boys' and Etienne said, 'The Beastie Boy bought your Aunt's documentary?! Get the f*** out of here!' and I said, 'Yeah!!!'"

Adam Yauch, head of Oscilloscope Laboratories said, "Michel is one of the most innovative and creative people in the world. So it's great to see him making a sincere doc on a subject that is so close to his heart."

The Book of Eli - Photos from the Hughes Bros' Post-Apocalyptic Western

USA Today have these new photos from The Hughes Brothers‘ The Book of Eli.

It tells the story of a lone man (Denzel Washington) who fights his way across America in order to protect a mysterious sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. The film is set in the future after the sun has exploded, leaving earth to rot.

Gary Oldman plays the villain of the piece.

Albert Hughes said "We had one scene where Denzel had to kill off one of his enemies. Right after he kills the guy, a little dust storm picks up and blows right over them. It was eerie. We're going to have people thinking an effect was computer-generated, when really it was just from shooting out here."

Washington, who shed 55 pounds for the role, recalls storms so rough that crews had to don goggles just to see what they were filming. "There's a reason there's nothing growing out here," he says. "It's land no one wants."
This film is looking good, but part of me is worried that this could end up like some kind of Waterworld.

The old Wentworth in Bioshock rumour may be a slightly bigger rumour

Back in April I posted the story that Wentworth Miller and Al Pacino were going to star in Gore Verbinski's Bioshock adaption. That was apparantly an April Fool.

Then it turned out that Verbinski was no longer making the film and it had died a slow death.

Now, according to Bloody Disgusting, it looks as if there is some movement on the film and the April Fool wasn't so foolish.

Late last night "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller updated his Twitter page with this shocking tweet, "Prison Break may be ending, but I've got things in the works. Hint...one word: Bioshock."

What do you think? Is he talking about the film or just that he's going to be playing the game on his down time?

Classic Scene - Is it safe? - Marathon Man

You may have noticed that Live for Films has been a bit quite today. There is a reason.

Yesterday I was struck down with the most hideous pain, worse than that pain ray thing Ming the Merciless uses in Flash Gordon. Tooth ache in fact. I woke up this morning and the pain had increased exponentially to really, really painful.

It was a mad dash to the dentist where, after some x-raying (but no manifestation of super-powers), the big molar was yanked out in pieces.

With a big hole in my mouth and mucho painkillers I am now in a semi-normal state.

My dentist was most friendly and efficient but all the yanking and pulling of teeth put me in mind of this classic scene from Marathon Man starring Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier.

If you are due a trip to the dentist soon do not watch this.

Mr Nobody - Trailer for sci-fi film starring Jared Leto

Nemo Nobody leads an ordinary existence at his wife's side, Elise, and their 3 children until the day when reality skids and he wakes up as an old man in the year 2092. At 120, Mr. Nobody is both the oldest man in the world and the last mortal of a new mankind where nobody dies anymore. But that doesn't seem to interest or bother him very much. The only questions that preoccupy him in the present is whether he lived the right life for himself, loved the woman whom he was supposed to love, and had the children whom he was meant to have... now his purpose is to find the right answer.

The film also stars Rhys Ifans and is directed by Jaco van Dormael (Toto the Hero)
