Star Wreck is heading to DVD

Star Wreck, as the name suggests, is a Star Trek spoof which is coming out on DVD for the first time on 4th May through Revolver Entertainment.
The film was originally released online for free by its director, Samuli Torssonen (who also stars in it), and is now seeing the light as a double DVD pack with tons of new and previously unseen extras, including a sneak peek at their next project, Iron Sky - That is the Space Nazis on the Moon film I mentioned a while back.
I should hopefully have a DVD or two to give away in a competition so watch this space.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine has leaked onto the Web.

Pity the poor mutant known as Wolverine. He gets adamantium painfully bonded to his skeleton, his memory ripped to shreds, there is never a time to rest due to the numerous appearances in pretty much every comic book going. Things were looking up with his very own film X-Men Origins: Wolverine where the man known as Hugh Jackman would portray him through the years. Sure there were lots of other mutants involved with the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool getting the spotlight in recent months, but at least it would mean people would get to see the old Canucklehead on the big screen.

Yep, things were looking up...until some blurt leaked a near DVD quality workprint of the film online. A month before the release date. That is quite a major security leak.

Now at first you may be thinking, "Cool, go, go, gadget BitComet!" However, think about it. Almost the completed version, minus a few effects here and a lack of reshoots there (the 106 minute runtime is almost 20 minutes shorter than the final cut), has been leaked onto the web and it looks like it will be a tough one to trace. If you are a fan of Wolverine and comic book movies then you want to see it as soon as possible, yet if we all go around downloading it (which we all know is illegal) and watching it then this could have a major knock on effect at the box office which could result in no sequel as the first did not make enough money.

That is a worst case scenario. As it is not the finished cut it could also result in bad word of mouth which again impacts the box office.

On the other hand, films like Taken, that have been out over here for months, make their way online yet the their box office take in the US is still nice and healthy.

It is a tricky one isn't it. For me, I want to see the Wolverine film on the big screen with the full cut. Even if it is not a great film, going to see it at the cinema makes it more likely that we will see a sequel (hopefully set in Japan or showing that Mark Millar storyline when Logan is brainwashed by HYDRA and attacks the heroes) and, even better, a proper Deadpool film.

The Dungeon Masters - This is how they roll

Yes, I admit it. Back in the day I rolled with the AD&D crowd. Journied to far off Universes with Traveller and Star Wars, fought the Greys and Saurians in Conspiracy X and fought the good fight in Twilight 2000. I even wrote a letter to a National Newspaper when they had an article where an local council had banned an RPG Group as they felt it promoted violence. Needless to say my letter basically told them to stop being so stupid, grow a pair, man up and that they were idiots. The Newspaper posted it as their letter of the week. I won a small victory. No one noticed.

Not played any in years though which is a shame, but I'm not ashamed of the fact that I did. Judge me or join me.

This little aside into my past is all to explain the fact that I really want to see Keven McAlester’s documentary about Dungeons & Dragons gamemasters. There is a review for it over on Spoutblog and here are some snippets from that:

Although Dungeons & Dragons came out in 1974, the game is still played across the world, and has directly contributed to the creation and success of online sword and sorcery games like World of Warcraft and EverQuest. Almost everyone you as about the game knows that there’s a certain nerdy/geeky vibe associated with it, although most people probably couldn’t tell you anything
else about it. The Dungeons Masters attempts to show you the personalities
behind the dice-rolling by taking intimate looks inside the lives of three
different dungeon masters who, in effect, become the game themselves.

The three subjects of the film are Richard, Scott, and Elizabeth and at
face value, they all seem to be cut from the stereotypical images of D&D
players. Richard and Scott seem like clones of the Comic Book Guy on The
Simpsons, while Elizabeth is bit closer to Thora Birch in Ghost World with a few
extra doses of geek thrown into the mix. Although they are spread out in
California, Lousiana and Florida, they share similar experiences.

The film could have easily taken these characters and just made fun of them, but
once you get past the geek factor, it remains a portrait of three very different
individuals, and you get an intimate look into their lives. The gaming almost
becomes peripheral as you find out who these people are and what drives they are
like at home, at work, and in their own worlds. The cinematography by Lee Daniel
is, as expected, extremely beautiful. Blonde Redhead provides a musical score
that is at times sad and melancholy, and other times is grand and cinematic,
which is often juxtaposed by what you see on screen.

The Dungeon Masters is a well-crafted film that peeks behind the curtain of role-playing games and gives you an unflinching look at three people who have made gaming one of their creative outlets.

Mads Mikkelsen and Alexa Davalos hear the Clash of The Titans

I posted the news about Gemma Arteton joining the cast a few days ago but now some more casting news has surfaced.

Mads Mikkelsen, Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos are boarding "Clash of the Titans," the Greek-god epic being directed by Louis Leterrier.

Sam Worthington is toplining as Perseus, who is put on a quest to save a princess and defeat Hades, the god of hell. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay wrote the script.

Mikkelsen is playing Draco, a skilled fighter and leader of the Praetorian Guard that accompanies Perseus.

Davalos is Andromeda, the captured princess, and Arterton is Io, who is instrumental in bringing the winged horse Pegasus to Perseus.

Legendary is co-producing and co-financing the pic, which is set to begin lensing in the U.K. at the end of April. Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk is producing with Kevin de la Noy. Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull are executive producing.

Lynn Harris and Matt Milam are overseeing for Warners.

Mikkelsen, one of Denmark's most recognizable faces, is best known to American audiences for his role of the villain in "Casino Royale." Repped by UTA and Danish agent Ulrich Moller-Jorgensen, the actor stars in Eurowide Film's "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky."

Arterton, who appeared in the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace," next appears in Richard Curtis' "The Boat That Rocked" and opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." She is repped by UK's Independent Talent Group.

ICM-repped Davalos was most recently seen in "Defiance." Other credits include "The Mist," "Feast of Love" and "The Chronicles of Riddick."

Thoughts on the G.I. Joe and Sherlock Holmes Footage at ShoWest

The good folks over at First Showing have seen some footage of various films at ShoWest in Las Vegas. Here is a snippet of what they thought of a couple of them.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Essentially, what I saw was a super charged mix of high tech bio suits, lasers, futuristic military vehicles, guns of every type, jumping, dodging, spinning, bio-gadgetry, and whimsical technology that we only see in movies. And this isn't a good thing. Everybody remembers The Mummy Returns, also directed by Stephen Sommers, and how they just threw in everything they could into that to beef it up and it made it so damn cheesy? Some sort of thing here, except that instead of mummies, we've got Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans wearing ridiculous-looking armored suits with helmets that emulate the Iron Man visor.

Sherlock Holmes

The first thing you need to know is that this isn't the Sherlock Holmes you know… It a funky way, it's kind of like if Snatch were about a British detective from the 1800s, which is exactly what it is, thanks to Guy Ritchie writing and directing. The reaction didn't seem to be overly positive, at least coming from a few other writers that I know. It is a bit of a shock at first, because it's such a big departure from expectations, and I hope most people still like it.

But is it good? To be honest, I enjoyed it, it looked very fun. I'm not expecting anything incredible, and although I do really appreciate Guy Ritchie (I loved both Snatch and even RocknRolla), I wasn't expecting a new Guy Ritchie classic like Snatch. Honestly, I'm just expecting a good popcorn flick, which is exactly what it looks like. The first big shocker is that this looks like a buddy comedy, not a serious movie, with some really zany British humor that may really turn off quite a few people. But of course, you'll all get your own taste of that whenever you get to see this trailer, and can judge for yourself whether it works or not.

Then I remember that it's Robert Downey Jr., in that signature top hat, with his signature pipe, and with six pack abs and no shirt (in one scene where he's boxing another guy), kicking some serious ass, and I'm reminded why I actually still am looking forward to this.

Interesting stuff. I get the feeling G.I. Joe will be a cheese fest with a couple of cool bits thrown in and Sherlock Holmes will split opinion right down the middle. I think it will all depend if you are a fan of Guy Ritchie's previous films.

Pacino in Bioshock with a possible cameo by Johnny Depp?

"Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller and Oscar-winner Al Pacino have joined the cast of Gore Verbinski's "Bioshock" for Universal Pictures reports The Chicago News Dispatcher.
Based on the best-selling 2007 video game, the story is set in the 1960's when a plane crashes in the middle of the Atlantic. Jack (Miller), the sole survivor, discovers a lighthouse which leads down to Rapture, an underwater city built in the 1940's by a business magnate who wanted to create a scientific utopia where people could work without governmental or religious oversight.

Unfortunately the city has fallen into decay and madness, insane genetically mutated beings called 'Splicers' roam the halls. Only an energy that lies within various young girls can save the city, these girls however are protected by gigantic bodyguards called Big Daddies.

Pacino is in negotiations to play the magnate Andrew Ryan, while Verbinski is apparently pursuing one of his old "Pirates of the Caribbean" co-stars for a cameo as the bunny mask-wearing nutter Sander Cohen in a sequence midway through the film.
Unlike the game which is kept purely indoors, one big sequence will apparently involve a several-minute long scene underwater. The production will move into Leavesden Studios once filming on the final "Harry Potter" is complete, with the water tank built for 'Goblet of Fire' to be utilized for that underwater scene.

Location filming will also take place in Malta.

Verbinski is producing from a script by John Logan.

I got to this point and my mind was wondering who the cameo would be by...would it be Depp? Would Pacino bring his A-Game to this one.

Then I clicked on the link to The Chicago News Dispatcher above and was quickly reminded of todays date.

A very good, almost feasible, April Fool...apparantly.

Kevin Spacey to be the Father of Invention

Kevin Spacey will star in and produce the indie comedy Father of Invention.

Trent Cooper ("Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector") will direct from a script he penned with Jonathan Krane and Nichole Beattie.

The story centers on a humble inventor-turned-egomaniacal billionaire who loses it all when one of his inventions goes horribly awry. After eight years in federal prison, he returns bankrupt, homeless and determined to rebuild his reputation and fortune.

Trigger Street Prods.' Spacey and Dana Brunetti are producing alongside Krane ("Swordfish") and Ken Barbet. Scott Lumpkin exec produces.

Spacey has several films in the can, including "Men Who Stare at Goats," alongside George Clooney, "Telstar" and "Shrink."

Jonah Hex will ride with Will Arnett and Michael Shannon

Will Arnett ("Blades of Glory") and Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road") have joined the adaptation of "Jonah Hex" for Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures says The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the DC Comics character, Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox star in the story of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malkovich) who wants to raise an army of the undead to liberate the South.

Arnett will play a Union soldier who enlists Hex and is blindsided by the dirty fighting style of his enemies. Shannon plays Doc Cross Williams, the bizarre ringleader of a brutal gladiator circus event.

Jimmy Hayward is directing, shooting kicks off this month in Louisiana.
