Danny Huston to play King Richard in Robin Hood

Danny Huston is joining the cast of Universal and Imagine's untitled Robin Hood movie, which Ridley Scott is now directing in England.

Russell Crowe plays the legendary folk hero in the latest retelling of the Robin Hood myth being written by Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris and Brian Helgeland. Imagine's Brian Grazer is producing along with Scott and Crowe.

Huston will step into the shoes of the historical figure King Richard, who became known as Richard the Lionheart because of his exploits in the Third Crusade.

Huston appeared this summer on the big screen in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," playing Wolverine's nemesis William Stryker, and recently finished work on "Clash of the Titans," in which he plays Poseidon.

Photo of Gemma Arteton on the set of Clash of the Titans

This is the first photo of actress Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) in costume on the set of Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans as a new character called Io. The photo was debuted on Gemma Arterton Online.

Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny. Louis Leterrier is directing from a script by Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark).

The photo doesn't really tell us much, but I am looking forward to seeing more from the film.

A clearer look at Perseus

Here is a better look at Sam Worthington as Perseus in Louis Leterrier's reimagining of the Clash of the Titans. It is an uncropped version of the first photo I posted - there is also another photo from yesterday. I'm not sure who or what he is fighting. Could it be Medusa (although he is looking right at it)

I love the jagged shield and the fact everything looks battle worn. A lot better than the shiny shield and sword that Harry Hamlin used in the original.

Now if we could only see some photos of the beasts and Gods he will be facing.

Clash of the Titans - Another photo of Sam as Perseus

This is looking like it will be a pretty cool remake.

"He's Charles Bronson in Death Wish," Sam Worthington says in regards to his inspiration for the character. "That's how I'm playing him." And his skirt? "We're trying to make it as manly as possible," he laughs.

The film will be out next March.

Clash of the Titans - First proper look at Perseus

This is out first proper look of Sam Worthington in action as Perseus and it does look pretty cool. Looks like he will be kicking serious ass and makes me wish they would do a David Gemmell adaption with this kind of look.

Sam Worthington in a skirt on a boat for Clash of the Titans

Holy Zeus' Beard! CraveOnline have the first look at Sam Worthington shooting on the set of Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans. Sam is playing Perseus who was portrayed by L.A. Law himself, Harry Hamlin. Below is a photo of Pete Postlethwaite as a gnarly old goat dude.

These photos were shot on Tenerife, so Sam's legs will be getting a nice tan in that skirt.

I'm still trying to get some photos of the creatures and Gods from the film (I have a friend who has a friend in the make-up department so fingers crossed - although I wouldn't hold your breath).

Despair - News on a twisted love story starring David Hess

Psychomania Films are proud to announce their first feature production: Despair – a seriously twisted love story exploring the dark and unnerving relationship between a kidnapper and his captive.

Written by David Flint (author of Ten Years of Terror: British Films of the 1970s, Zombie Holocaust) and Andrew Barker (director of Straw Man - check out my interview with him) and to be directed by David Flint, Despair will star film legend David Hess (Last House on the Left, Hitch-Hike).

The film will be shot late in the summer of 2009 in the City of Nottingham, UK. The location will utilize the ancient labyrinthine caves beneath the city’s bustling streets.

Hess will play Lou, an American living in England who has a chance encounter with Meredith, a young girl travelling across Europe. She finds herself in a small English village, tired, weary and far from home. Meredith enters a local pub and finds herself talking to a fellow American - Lou, a seemingly ordinary man. But Lou isn’t all he seems to be; a darkly sinister mind lurks beneath this mundane appearance. Meredith is about walk into his trap.

Lou takes Meredith captive, descending them both into a spiralling nightmare of their own making.

Flint says, "Despair is a challenging, brutal project. It takes a very real horror - as many cases across the world unfortunately show - and delivers several new twists to the tale."

He continues, "Having David on board is great. As anyone who has seen his incendiary performances in Last House on the Left, Hitch-Hike and House on the Edge of the Park can attest, he brings a multi-layered intensity and sense of humanity to his characters, and I think the character of Lou will allow him to further explore the dark psyche that he has been perfecting for over thirty years."

What makes Despair different: The production crew will comprise of Director of Photography/Editor Adam Krajczynski (Straw Man), Special Make-up Designer Hannah Eccleston (Apocalypto, Clash of the Titans) and the production team of co-writer Andrew Barker, Matthew Waldram and Kate Horlor (Mutant Chronicles, Straw Man).
David Flint says, "I'm very excited about Despair - with the presence of David Hess and the backing of an excellent production team I feel confident that we will be able to produce a film that transcends genre and leave audiences both exhilarated and emotionally drained, while at the same time giving them something to think about."

Despair will mark the first feature production for Psychomania Films; a new independent production company based in the UK, specialising in low budget, cutting edge horror, exploitation and underground film productions.

Founded by both David Flint and Andrew Barker, the company already has several films in development. Barker says, “Despair is a bold, uncompromising horror film that will grab you by the collars and will not let go until it has shaken you out of your skin. The scripts we now have in various stages of development all share the same goal; to provoke, unnerve and terrify.”

- The Michael Bay and McG fued escalates to schoolboy heights according to Men's Style. "Michael Bay has a big cock," McG says to Men's Style. "But I'd like to believe mine is bigger." McG smiles. Gervais will voice the lead character, a “pudgy, perspiring purple creature, goes on a mission to change the world.”

- J J Abrams explains to io9 why there is so much lens flare in his Star Trek reboot.

Holy Zeus' beard! Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes join Clash of the Titans

Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes will play warring gods in Warner Bros. and Legendary's "Clash of the Titans," the Greek-god epic directed by Louis Leterrier.

Neeson is playing Zeus, the wise yet sometimes ill-tempered king of the gods and father of Perseus (Sam Worthington).

Fiennes will play Hades, ruler of the underworld who aims to overtake Zeus and rule over all. Fiennes' deal is in still in negotiations.

The two actors join Mads Mikkelsen, Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos in the production, which begins shooting later this month in the U.K.

Legendary is co-producing and co-financing the pic. Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk is producing with Kevin de la Noy. Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull are executive producing.

The deal marks Neeson's first since the tragic death of his wife, Natasha Richardson. The deal was initiated before her death. His film "Taken," released earlier this year, has proven to be a surprise hit, earning almost $140 million domestically.

Fiennes last starred in "The Reader."

Neeson as Zeus is a brilliant idea. Fiennes just has to bring his Voldermort attire and he's sorted.

Mads Mikkelsen and Alexa Davalos hear the Clash of The Titans

I posted the news about Gemma Arteton joining the cast a few days ago but now some more casting news has surfaced.
Mads Mikkelsen, Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos are boarding "Clash of the Titans," the Greek-god epic being directed by Louis Leterrier.

Sam Worthington is toplining as Perseus, who is put on a quest to save a princess and defeat Hades, the god of hell. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay wrote the script.

Mikkelsen is playing Draco, a skilled fighter and leader of the Praetorian Guard that accompanies Perseus.

Davalos is Andromeda, the captured princess, and Arterton is Io, who is instrumental in bringing the winged horse Pegasus to Perseus.

Legendary is co-producing and co-financing the pic, which is set to begin lensing in the U.K. at the end of April. Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk is producing with Kevin de la Noy. Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull are executive producing.

Lynn Harris and Matt Milam are overseeing for Warners.

Mikkelsen, one of Denmark's most recognizable faces, is best known to American audiences for his role of the villain in "Casino Royale." Repped by UTA and Danish agent Ulrich Moller-Jorgensen, the actor stars in Eurowide Film's "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky."

Arterton, who appeared in the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace," next appears in Richard Curtis' "The Boat That Rocked" and opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." She is repped by UK's Independent Talent Group.

ICM-repped Davalos was most recently seen in "Defiance." Other credits include "The Mist," "Feast of Love" and "The Chronicles of Riddick."

Gemma Arteton to star in Clash of the Titans remake

Gemma Arterton is set to star as the demi-goddess Io in Louis Leterrier’s forthcoming remake of Clash Of The Titans. Arterton showed up at the Jameson Empire Awards to pick up the Best Newcomer award. She spoke to Empire magazine about the sword and sandals remake.

“My part is... the coolest part,” she laughed. “Io’s not in the original film. Perseus falls in love with her and then [CENSORED FOR TINY SPOILER]. It’s a really great part.”

According to Arterton, though, Io’s presence isn’t the only thing about the movie, which is, of course, a reimagining of the 1981 Harry Hamlin ‘classic’ in which Perseus embarks upon an epic quest, part of which involves killing the evil Medusa and the dreaded Kraken.

“The script is very different,” she continued. “Obviously the story is the story, but it’s much more about Perseus’ mission, and how he deals with being the son of Zeus, and things like that, so it feels a little more about him, and about the issues around that.”

Sam Worthington is on board as Perseus while Liam Neeson was reputed to have been offered the role of Zeus. However, given his current tragic circumstances, it’s not yet known if he will commit to the role.

Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) says that he's keen on doing a big sci-fi feature in the future. Roth says its an original ideas of his and wants to mix "the intelligence of “2001” and the mythology of “Star Wars”...I don’t want to make it so intellectual that it’s confounding, but on the other hand I’m not so sure I can write the kind of wonderful fantasy that Lucas does."

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen director Michael Bay says that the first trailer will hit either on the Superbowl or in early February. Here's the latest update from his official blog: "Back from Egypt and Jordan - we had a wonderful shoot over there... However, she has a teenage son, played by Jonah Hill, who has no interesting in sharing his mother with a new man. The Duplass Brothers have a very unique brand of comedy, part of which involves shooting all the scenes in the film in sequence, as opposed to out-of-order like most other films.

The Los Angeles Film Critics had awarded WALL-E “Best Picture of the Year”, a first for an animated film.

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their yearly award winners - Josh Brolin (Milk) edged out Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) for the Best Supporting Actor award

God Help Us! Brett Ratner to make God of War

Coming Soon mention that director Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand, Red Dragon, Rush Hour) has finally confirmed that he is attached to direct the God of War movie in an interview with UGO.

Universal Pictures secured the movie rights to the popular video game created by Sony Computer Entertainment back in the summer of 2005. Mosaic Media Group's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner were announced as producers at the time.

Set in ancient Greece, the game follows the battles of the warrior Kratos, who tackles mythological beasts including Medusa, Cyclops and the Hydra. Players navigate Kratos on his quest to find Pandora's Box and destroy Ares, the god of war.

The game, created by David Jaffe and Shannon Studstill, was released for PlayStation 2 in March of 2005. A sequel was released in March of 2007 and a prequel, exclusive to PlayStation Portable, in March of 2008. A third title is in development for the PlayStation 3.

In addition to God of War, Ratner also mentioned he has Playboy and Beverly Hills Cop 4 in development as well.

We've got his movie, 2 Hercules and a Jason and the Argonauts being made along with a remake of Clash of the Titans. The next few years are going to be sword and sandals all over the place!

What do you think of this news? Never played the game - is it good and would it make a worthy movie? Is Ratner the one to make that movie?

Titans and Sonja

A bit of news on for those fans of the sword and sorcery genre.

First up, Red Sonja is being mentioned by Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Spy Kids, Grind House). Apparantly he wants his good buddy, Douglas Aarniokoski, to direct and his current l'amore, Rose McGowan, to star. Not sure if Rose has the moxie to wear the chainmail bikini but we shall see.

The next one up is the classic, Clash of the Titans. Yep, Perseus, Caliban and Pegasus will be hitting the screen again. Louis Leterrier (director of The Incredible Hulk) is up for directing duties. Excellent news is that Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back) is writing it.

Question is who will star in it? Who could be Perseus, Zeus, Andromeda, or Bubo? Any ideas whack them in the comments.
