Dead Space to be moviefied

The Electronic Arts hit vidgame Dead Space is on course to become a sci-fi/horror film, with "Eagle Eye" helmer D.J. Caruso attached to direct according to Variety.

"Dead Space" is set in the 26th century in deep space, where an engineer who responds to a distress signal from a mining ship finds the vessel infested with monstrous creatures called Necromorphs. The creatures are human corpses, reanimated by an alien virus.

EA launched the game in 2008 and is working on the second and third installments.

I've just started playing the game and it is a little spooky.

"Dead Space" becomes the fifth EA title to percolate as a feature property. Aside from the "Dante's Inferno" film that will be produced by Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham, EA is in business with Universal on "Army of Two," with Scott Z. Burns ("The Bourne Ultimatum") scripting and Scott Stuber producing. EA's "The Sims" is being developed by producer John Davis and "Mass Effect" by "Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad.

A Dead Space film sounds good, but it will have to pull out all the stops to distance itself from films like Event Horizon, and possibly Pandorum (judging by the trailers for that one). Would you want to see a Dead Space film? Who should star in it?

Castlevania film is reborn

Last I heard the Castlevania film adaption was as dead as can be, but it has once more risen from the grave.

James Wan, the co-mastermind behind the Saw franchise, and director of Dead Silence and Death Sentence, will be co-writing and directing Castlevania for producer Paul W.S. Anderson. Sylvain White was originally slated to direct. Castlevania is an adaptation of the popular NES game from the 80's that has since become a massive video game franchise.

"I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," James Wan tells Bloody-Disgusting in an exclusive chat. "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it which Konami is very excited about.

"The thing I love about what Konami did with Castlevania, was taking the iconic Dracula mythology and Eastern-European setting, and retelling it with a Japanese pop-cultural sensibility," he continues. "That’s the East-meets-West tone I want to visually expand on for the film. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to make a highly stylized, fantasy, action film that focuses on the gothic storyline and the cool, anime-like characters. For once, the human hero is as sexy and dangerous as the vampire villain, and his weapon of choice was what attracted me to the project in the first place – The Vampire Killer Whip.”

Sam Rami to direct World of Warcraft film

Sam Raimi has signed on to direct "Warcraft," the live-action film adaptation of the fantasy videogame franchise World of Warcraft. Exciting news. I just hope he brings his Army of Darkness and Spider-Man 2 skills to the film and not Spidey 3!

Legendary Pictures and vidgame publisher Blizzard Entertainment are mounting the film, and Warner Bros. will co-finance and distribute. The team boasts an impressive pedigree: In addition to the director of "Spider-Man," the partners have added "The Dark Knight" producer Charles Roven to the creative mix.

The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of "Warcraft" and shoot the picture after he completes work on "Spider-Man 4," which gets under way early next year for Columbia Pictures.

The movie will be financed under the Legendary Pictures' co-production and co-financing deal with WB, in a manner similar to the Todd Phillips-directed "The Hangover" plus the Roven-produced "Batman Begins" and "Dark Knight."

The "Warcraft" universe features an epic conflict between the Horde and the Alliance. The game has developed a global following since its launch in 1994 and shows no signs of slowing. Its most recent expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King," sold more than 2.8 million copies in the first day of release and more than 4 million its first month.

"Warcraft" is "emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known," said Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov. The deal revives a long-dormant pact made by Legendary and Blizzard for a film adaptation of the game (Daily Variety, May 8, 2006).

"At its core, 'Warcraft' is a fantastic, action-packed story," Raimi said in a statement.

Prince of Persia - A photo of Sir Ben Kingsley as the bad guy of the piece

Yesterday I posted some new posters for the video game adaption of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Now ComingSoon have a photo of Sir Ben Kingsley as the villainous Nizam in the same almost black and white colour scheme.

It says that it is the first photo of Kingsley as the character but I assume they mean first official one as I posted a photo of him as Nizam doing the pointy dance back in October last year.

Mike Newell is directing. Jake Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent an evil nobleman (Kingsley) from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world. Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell also star.

What does Grant Morrison have to say about an Invisibles movie?

Comic master Grant Morrison has been talking to MTV. Amongst other things he mentioned the possibility of his classic series, The Invisibles, heading to the big screen.

"Yeah, I'd love to see it, but it's not happening anytime soon," said Morrison. "I kind of want to do a different take on it, because obviously when 'The Matrix' came out, it was covering a lot of similar areas. There were bald guys in fetish amounts doing kung-fu."

"We've kind of seen that, so I don't want to go down that road," continued Morrison. "But I came up with a take on 'The Invisibles' that I think is really new, so yeah, it's something I'd like to see done. I'd like to see it as a video game as well, if anything."

Now what on Earth would an Invisibles video game entail?

Star Wars The Old Republic Timeline trailer 3: The Return of the Mandalorians

The Keeper of the Jedi Archives has entered a new holorecord. Continuing his investigation, Master Gnost-Dural delves deeper into the history of the galaxy after discovering that the blockade that Hylo Visz helped end was a result of the actions of the new Mandalore.

Adopting the ancient and infamous title of Mandalore, this young leader amassed an army of Mandalorian mercenaries and bounty hunters. The new Mandalore led his forces to form a blockade and challenge the Jedi Order, effectively turning the tide of the war back in the Sith Empire's favor.

Watch the third Timeline holorecord, The Return of the Mandalorians, narrated by actor Lance Henriksen.

TV Squad also say George Lucas may be at this years Comic Con to talk about aht live action Star Wars TV show that is due to start filming in Australia soon.

Second Skin - MMO Documentary

Second Skin takes an intimate, disturbing look at three sets of computer gamers whose lives have been transformed by online virtual worlds. An emerging genre of computer software called Massively Multiplayer Online games, or MMOs, allows millions of users to interact simultaneously in virtual spaces. Of the 50 million players worldwide, 50 percent consider themselves addicted. From individuals struggling with addiction to couples who have fallen in love without meeting; from disabled players whose lives have been given new purpose to gold farmers, entrepreneurs and widows, Second Skin opens viewers’ eyes to a phenomenon that may permanently change the way human beings interact — and with possibly devastating consequences.

Dan Bustard sacrificed everything to his MMO addiction. Dan, once a prosperous businessowner with a luxurious house, car and loving fiancé, ended up living in his nephew's empty basement, playing his game 20 hours a day and using soda bottles as toilets. Fearing death or destitution, Dan enrolled himself in The Safe Haven, a rehab center for online gamers. It proved to be “the worst mistake of my life. After fleeing The Haven, Dan returned to his nephew’s house only to relapse into his old habits. Gradually, he began a slow recovery, on his own terms. And as he begins to regain his old life, his nephew sinks deeper and deeper into his own MMO addiction, more severe than Dan’s, and with far more severe consequences.

Kevin Keel met Heather Cowan on the Peaks of Everfrost, in the virtual world of Norrath. The two fell in love as a knight and a cleric slaying dragons. After blindly declaring their love online, they met for the first time in reality in October. Four months later, Kevin drove halfway across the country on Valentine's Day to move in with Heather. With the backdrop of various married couples who met in MMOs, viewers follow Heather and Kevin as they translate their virtual-world relationship into the real world. Can the two continue their actual relationship with the success of the fantasy-land relationship they’ve had thus far?

Fort Wayne, Indiana, is home to a thriving MMO community that lives, works and games together. Andy is a seasoned MMO gamer who currently raids nightly in World of Warcraft along with his wife, Karalee. Their neighbors, Anthony, Chris and Matt, converted their living room into the Fortress of Dorkitude, where they also play MMOs for 40-plus hours a week. They are part of a larger group of gamers, most of whose members work together at a cell phone company, live in close proximity, hit bars on the weekends and play WoW constantly. Fort Wayne introduces viewers to this phenomenon and takes them deeper into it. Watching the group interact is watching MMO culture spoken, without the avatars.

Alongside these three strands, Second Skin ventures to China to explore the world of Gold Farming: sweatshops where millions of Chinese workers spend 20-hour days playing MMOs to earn virtual gold that is sold for real money. The movie also addresses virtual worlds through the lens of the disabled, who live out much richer lives through these online spaces, as well as guilds, massive groups of gamers who meet inside the games and are often closer than family.

Public Enemies Bank Raid Game

A new online game created by Universal Pictures International to promote upcoming movie Public Enemies is using Facebook Connect and Twitter to create a new form of social gaming experience.

Bank Raids challenges you to match 1930’s John Dillinger for criminal ambition, recruiting gang members, robbing banks to try to become Public Enemy No. 1.

This is one of the first film marketing campaigns to incorporate Facebook Connect, using it to enhance the gaming experience by seamlessly integrating your Facebook account with game-play. You can use your Facebook login to sign in, save your progress and recruit friends to your gang.

When you finish playing you can automatically post updates to Facebook and popular micro-blogging site Twitter, sharing exploits with friends as your notoriety rises, including how many banks you’ve raided and how much money you’ve stolen.

You can play the game in 2/3 minutes for a quick fire experience or you can play over a number of days and weeks, immersing yourself in the world and building up your fortune. A scoreboard will show your position in relation to other gang leaders.

Public Enemies is the true story of John Dillinger. He was a charismatic 1930’s Chicago gangster who outwitted and outgunned the law in a series of wild chases and outrageous bank raids. He was branded as America’s Public Enemy No. 1 by the police, but regarded as a hero by the general public. Directed by Michael Mann, starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, Public Enemies opens internationally from 1st July 2009.

Play the game.

Thanks to Pam and Marc for letting me know about the game.

Lars von Trier's Antichrist to spawn a Video Game?

Just had to check the date. It is definitely not 1st April so this may in fact be true.

Antichrist is the new movie from Lars Von Trier it was met with laughter and outrage by critics in Cannes.

A couple (Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg) mourning the loss of their child retreat to a cabin in the woods, where they soon encounter strange, terrifying occurrences. Cruelty between the sexes ensues.

Now according to /Film it is being turned into a video game. An article on Politiken.dk (Google translation) announced the games development.

Morten Iversen, who wrote the Hitman games, is listed as ‘game developer’ on the main Zentropa website.

The game, called Eden (which was the name of the cottage in the film) , will be a first-person thriller/adventure game that apparantly invites players to confront their fears. Willem Dafoe is meant to be reprising his role in voice-over, though the game will not replicate the film, picking up afterward instead.

The experience will be “strong and very personal,” “controversial” and that it “…must be your own personal hell - a bit like a nightmare version of Myst. It will also apparantly pull information from the net, such as news reports and videos, and add them to the gaming experience

“They are based on what fears you have (part of the questions you answer before starting the game). So if you suffer from arachnophobia the articles are likely to contain something about spiders and what not.”

Eden will be a PC title, and while early in development is planned for a release within a year, potentially either on the Antichrist DVD or as a download.

It does sound like it could be quite an interesting game, but it doesn seem like an odd film to base it on. Is it real or not? Would you play it?
