Thomas Jane is lost in Dark Country

Thomas Jane, has been directing a 3D horror film called Dark Country for the last year or so.

It stars Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, and Lauren German, the story follows a couple en route from Las Vegas that are forced to deal with a body out in the desert making their honeymoon one hellish ride.

According to First Showing it has some supernatural elements to it and Quiet Earth had these first photos from the film.

I am a big fan of Thomas Jane. I thought he was great as The Punisher and I've liked him in pretty much everything I've seen him in. Glad to see him teamed up with Ron Perlman again. He is another solid actor.

Although The Mutant Chronicles that they appeared in together was not very good.

‘The Strange Adventures Of H.P. Lovecraft’ Creators On Why Ron Howard Is Right For Horror Adaptation

I recently posted a story about Ron Howard being attached to direct the comic book adaption of The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz.

Now MTV had an interview with writer/creator Mac Carter (who’s also writing the screenplay for the film) and cover artist/producer Adam Byrne about the comic, the film, Ron Howard and who they would like to play Lovecraft. MTV: What’s the appeal of the author as a story character? What aspects of H.P. Lovecraft — the man and his work — will we see in the series and film?

MC: Well, in my mind, it’s no coincidence that the book landed with Universal. When we set out to create the comic we talked a lot about their classic monsters. We felt there was a model at work in their pantheon that we could follow — that of the tragic, misunderstood monster: Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, even the Gill Man. Some of the details of Lovecraft’s sad and complex biography started to suggest a similar character. All we needed was the horror. Well, Lovecraft’s writings provide that in spades.

But let me just say, we have one more hope — that with “The Strange Adventures of HP Lovecraft” we create a curiosity for the man’s idiosyncratic writings, and that a notoriously un-filmable author, not unlike Philip K. Dick with “Blade Runner,” suddenly becomes viable. Because, after all, who doesn’t want to see more of this guy’s mind-blowing stories on the big screen?

AB: Well, the reaction on the internet has been pretty interesting, even though the book hasn’t been released yet. The most important thing to keep in mind is, H.P. Lovecraft is very much the awkward, reclusive writer he’s commonly portrayed as in his biographies and by no means a Hollywood hunk. This is not a gunslinging book for gunslinging sake. It’s the story of a man placed in a very burdensome, nearly tragic set of circumstances who resorts to any means to resolve them.

MTV: Ron Howard isn’t typically viewed as a horror director — why is he right for this project?

MC: Not typically viewed as a horror director, you say? There’s a lot of talkback on blogs about this. Thanks for the opportunity to address it.

Not that the guy needs my endorsement, but perhaps there’s a more generous way of framing Mr. Howard’s talent with respect to horror: to my mind, he is our generation’s Howard Hawks. What about “Rio Bravo” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” assured anyone that Hawks would create a classic in “The Thing from Another World?” And yet, there it is — a horror masterpiece.

Put simply, Ron Howard is a storyteller. He’s versatile, working effortlessly and fluently across genres, from balls-to-the-wall action-thriller to historical sit-down drama, always instilling the work with creativity, passion and humanity. Why would his horror film be any different?

AB: First of all, Ron Howard is a great dramatic director. He cares about making the audience connect with the characters. “Frost/Nixon,” “Cinderella Man,” etc, are great indications that Ron can nail a time and a place and ground you in a character’s universe. That’s key for introducing Lovecraft’s biography. If you don’t care about him as a person, you’re not likely to care about the horror unfolding around him.

MTV: In an ideal scenario, who’s your pick to play H.P. Lovecraft in the film?

AB: In creating the character’s look for the comic, Tony Salmons and I talked a lot about a cross between the photographs that exist of the real man and the actor Adrien Brody. When Mac and I watched his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards, the one where he dips Halle Berry, we looked at each other like, that is our H.P. Lovecraft. Obviously, that’s not our call now that it’s getting adapted for film, but it was fun to imagine Adrien while we were making the book.

It all sounds very interesting and I think Brody is an excellent choice to play Lovecraft. Now if only they can get him.

UPDATED: Leonardo DiCaprio NOT to be a Button Man

UPDATE: Doh! Looks like I fell victim to an unsubstantiated rumour regarding this. MTV have this to say about it:

The upcoming film “Button Man” is not related in any way to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” — and, contrary to earlier reports, it’s not related to Leonardo DiCaprio, either.

Entertainment Weekly is crying foul on Internet rumors that the “Body of Lies” actor would star in the “2000 A.D.” comic property. The news site is reporting that Leo is not attached to “Button Man” according to studio representatives. The rumor originated from a listing in Production Weekly, a print magazine that provides information on Hollywood projects.

While DiCaprio’s involvement is now officially scrapped, there is movement on “Button Man.” A DreamWorks representative tells Entertainment Weekly that “Eagle Eye” screenwriter Hillary Seitz will pen the screenplay for the comic book adaptation.

So there you have it. If DiCaprio is not to be a Button Man, who could you see in the role?

According to Production Weekly, Button Man focuses on Harry Exton, an ex-mercenary that participates in a violent underground sport known as “the game.” Exton is one of several killers — appropriately called ‘button men’ — that define victory by slaying their opponent or claiming the first two joints of their victim’s finger. When Harry decides to retire from the sport, he learns the hard way that his own survival is anything but a game.

DiCaprio is expected to star as Exton in the “2000 A.D.” comic book adaptation, from the same publishers of the in-development “Judge Dredd” relaunch. The actor-producer has snatched up the rights to several graphic novel properties as of late, such as the manga franchises “Ninja Scroll” and “Akira” — though he says that he won’t star in either film.

The erstwhile “Titanic” star has also found himself at the center of some higher profile comic book rumors in the last year. Alongside “Inglourious Basterds” actor Brad Pitt, DiCaprio has been mentioned as a contender for Steve Rogers in “The First Avenger: Captain America.”

Other than DiCaprio’s newly announced “Button Man” and his attachment to “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “Inception,” not much is known about the Academy Award nominated actor’s involvement in comic book movie properties.

Paul Bettany has been an Archangel in Legion and may now become a Priest

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paul Bettany is in negotiations to star in Priest a horror Western that Michael De Luca and Stars Road Entertainment's Josh Donen are producing for Screen Gems. Mitchell Peck also will produce.

The move would reunite Bettany with director Scott Stewart, for whom he just finished starring in "Legion," an upcoming Screen Gems supernatural thriller.

An adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book, "Priest" is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest (Bettany) who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Cory Goodman ("The Brood") wrote the screenplay.

"I knew the moment I saw Stewart's first cut of 'Legion' that Bettany was Priest and so I mentioned it to him immediately," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said.

Legion, which is set to open next January, is a thriller that stars Bettany as the archangel Michael, who is all that stands between mankind and an apocalypse after God has lost faith in humanity. But the Almighty apparently hasn't lost all hope -- a child is on the way who is the second coming of Christ, and a group of strangers who recognize the fact must band together to save it. It is director Scott Stewart's first feature film, from a script he co-wrote with Peter Schink. It also stars Dennis Quaid, Kate Walsh and Tyrese Gibson.

Drag Me To Hell - Poster for Sam Raimi's latest horror film

Here is the new poster for Sam Raimi's latest horror film, Drag Me To Hell. Fingers crossed he's got his Evil Dead mojo working. I quite like the poster although it does seem quite Photoshoppy.

The story follows Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion?

Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home. In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse?

Andy Hallett has passed away

Andy Hallett, who played the singing nightclub-host demon Lorne (who could read people from their auras when they sang) in Angel, has died of heart failure at age 33
E! Online reports that the actor passed away at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on Sunday night with his father Dave at his side.

Hallett had struggled with heart failure for several years and been hospitalised several times.

After appearing in more than 70 episodes of the show, Hallett concentrated on his music career and performed across the United States.

Classic Scene: The Godfather - Louis' Restaurant Scene

A meeting is arranged between Virgil Sollozzo {Al Lettieri} and the Corleones with the agreement that both parties conform in a public venue.

*After exchanging several words with Sollozzo, Michael {Al Pacino} excuses himself and asks permission to go to the bathroom.

Michael retrieves a previously planted revolver and returns to the table.
Approximately 33 seconds- 4:57 / 5:30 -of mounting tensity pass before Michael suddenly rises out of his chair and assassinates Sollozzo and then Captain McCluskey {Sterling Hayden}.

To this day, my heart races with nervous anticipaction (especially hearing the rising sound of screeching rails from an approaching El-Train in the background) while viewing this classic and memorable movie moment.

*For those of you who are curious as to what words were exchanged between Sollozzo and Michael, here is a loose, general translation.

SOLLOZZO: "I'm sorry..."

MICHAEL: "Leave it alone." ( or ) "Forget about it."

SOLLOZZO: "What happened to your father was business. I have much respect for your father. But your father, his thinking is old-fashioned. You must understand why I had to do that."

MICHAEL: "I understand those things..."

[Waiter brings McCluskey's veal, then exits.]

SOLLOZZO: "Now let's work through where we go from here."

MICHAEL: "How do you say... ?" [Then Michael returns to speaking English.]

[After Michael returns from the bathroom]

SOLLOZZO: "Everything all right? I respect myself, understand, and cannot allow another man to hold me back. What happened was unavoidable. I had the unspoken support of the other Family dons. If your father were in better health, without his eldest son running things, no disrespect intended, we wouldn't have this nonsense. We will stop fighting until your father is well and can resume bargaining. No vengeance will be taken. We will have peace, but your Family should interfere no longer." - SunnyDownSnuff

Star Trek sequel can boldly go. Plus some new photos

First Showing have the news that Paramount has already preemptively greenlit a sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, and has confirmed that screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will be back. Joining those two, however, will be Damon Lindelof, a Paramount producer and writer for "Lost" who helped get this Star Trek reboot off the ground with J.J. Abrams to begin with. No decision has been made on whether Abrams will return to direct the sequel.

Lasarus Taxon - The New Sea dominates all

The feared consequences of global warming are at their peak when one man crosses the New Sea trying to save his daughter from the clutches of death. A tale about going beyond the limits of the human race and the survival of the species.

“We carry our dead inside”

A film that explores darkness (fear, anguish, solitude) and light (faith, hope, love); and digs into the limits of suffering and human pain. A piece that required talented interpretations due to the fact that the characters live under the extreme circumstances of starvation and desolation. Ariel, Mingo and Maia, three magnificent actors.

A story in which the “New Sea” dominates and has taken over the land, converting it into a World of utter violence and sheer necessity.

Lazarus Taxon is a sci-fi/horror short film directed by Denis Rovira that aims to surprise due to its auteur theory style (Haneke, Tarkovsky) and provoke the spectator to reflect upon the social and critically unsustainable situation. It is a story about survival and the limits of humankind.

We carry our loved ones within, when they leave the only way to keep them with us is on the inside. Lazarus Taxon, in paleontology, is the term used to describe a species that becomes extinct and later reappears…a biblical concept that furthermore gets entangled into a terrorizing story. Horror morphs with a story of true love, twisted and dark. The perfect union between Eros and Thanatos.

In Lazarus Taxon we find that in fact we aren’t born into this world and die alone. As far as the visual inspiration of film I must recognize two masters: the filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and the painter Zoran Music (Slovenia). “We aren´t the last ones”, is the title of one of his most famous works.

Eastern Promises 2? David Cronenberg thinks so

David Cronenberg is a great director. He has made some amazing films, many of which are dark and twisted (Rabid, The Fly, Videodrome, The Brood, Existenz, etc). More recently his films have had a different kind of feel to them - History of Violence and Eastern Promises. In all that time I don't think he has made a sequel to any of his films. All that now appears to be about to change.

David Cronenberg, Viggo Mortensen, the writer Steven Knight, producer Paul Webster and the studio are the ones who want to see more, and that's unusual as it's the whole team, co-stars aside of course.

Speaking to MTV, Cronenberg revealed his plans.

“We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be...I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it.”

He raised the point that he had never wanted to make a sequel before now either, but explains why.

“...in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didn’t feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie.”

This is great news as I thought Eastern Promises was a great film - such as nasty knife fight - and the ending certainly took Viggo's character off in a different direction.

John Cena talks about the Captain America rumour

There have been many rumours as to who will be playing Steve Rogers, The First Avenger - Captain America. Names such as Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, Will Smith, Aaron Eckhart and one that I posted a while back, Neal McDonough. However, one name that has cropped up recently is WWE Superstar, John Cena.

MTV caught up with the big guy to ask him. “Strictly a rumor,” said Cena but added with a smile, “If you guys are listening over at Marvel, that is a pretty cool rumor. I’m extremely patriotic, I was a captain of the football team once, so I think it works out. I think I’m your man.”

“To kill the rumor, I was never contacted by anyone,” admitted Cena. “Usually when those rumors start it’s because someone in that community thinks that I would be okay for a role. I’m flattered that they think I could play Captain America and I would be up for it.”

Yet, for an athlete known to give 250 pound bruisers the occasional “Attitude Adjustment” when necessary, could “The Champ” take himself seriously clad in a spandex jumpsuit?

“Hmm…could I take myself seriously in spandex…have you seen my other job?” joked Cena. “I think I could be alright. I think it’s a great fit.”

I personally hope that they don't go with Cena for Captain America. I'd rather they went for a big name actor or a total unknown first (although Cena has done a bit of action before).

Emily Browning to take Snyder's Sucker Punch

Emily Browning (The Uninvited) will replace Amanda Seyfried in Zack Snyder's action fantasy Sucker Punch for Warner Bros.

The Australian-born Browning is probably best known for her role as Violet in 2004's Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Seyfried had received the offer and was very interested in the starring role as an insane asylum inmate who loses herself in a fantasy world where she dreams about escaping with her fellow inmates. But she had to decline due to scheduling conflicts with the fourth season of Big Love. (HBO wouldn't release Seyfried from her shooting schedule.)

Shooting on Sucker Punch is set for the Autumn. Evan Rachel Wood, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, and Emma Stone are all still in talks to costar.

Fragment - Trailer for reanimation horror

Maurice Jarre has passed away

French composer Maurice Jarre, best known for his music for Hollywood films, has died in Los Angeles at 84, after suffering from cancer.

Jarre, father of the composer Jean-Michel Jarre, rose to prominence relatively late in life.

His breakthrough came in 1962 when he wrote the score for Lawrence of Arabia, for which he was awarded an Oscar.

He won two further Oscars for Doctor Zhivago and A Passage to India, and composed music for more than 150 films.

A further six Academy Award nominations came Jarre's way for his scores on other high profile films, including 1980s hits Ghost, Gorillas In The Mist and Witness.

The musician also earned two Bafta Awards, four Golden Globes and a Grammy in a career rich with accolades.

His scores enhanced the work of some of the film industry's greatest directors - among others David Lean, Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston and Luchino Visconti.

He also wrote symphonic music for theatre, ballet and television, including the 1970s mini-series Jesus of Nazareth.

Jarre, who moved to the US in the 1960s, was married four times and is the father of Jean-Michel Jarre, a pioneer of electronic music.

His other son, Kevin, is a screenwriter based in the US.

One of his final public appearances was at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, where he received a lifetime achievement award.

At the time, festival director Dieter Kosslick paid tribute to Jarre saying: "Film composers often are in the shadows of great directors and acting stars.

"It's different with Maurice Jarre - the music of Doctor Zhivago, like much of his work, is world-famous and remains unforgettable in cinema history."

Johnny Depp throwing shapes during downtime on The Run Diary

Now I know this has nothing to do with the making of the new film, The Rum Diary, based on Hunter S Thompson's novel. However, Depp is playing the lead character and these were apparantly shot recently in either Puerto Rico or Miami, where the shoot has been taking place.
I've included them as I am intrigued as to what Depp is doing with his arms as he jogs away. Is it Tai Chi, a Captain Jack Sparrow workout, visualising the next scene or something else? Any fitness fanatics out there know what he is doing? Thanks to Pam for sending them.

The Karate Kid is Dead. Long Live the Kung-Fu Kid.

Don't worry Ralph Macchio is still alive and kicking. This is all about the proposed remake of the original 1984 classic that so many of us grew up with. Jaden Smith (Will's kid) is down as the kid and Jackie Chan is going to be Mr Miyagi. Plus the action has moved to Beijing. That is all old news of course.

Jackie Chan has let slip that this remake is actually going to be called Kung Fu Kid, not Karate Kid.

"They don't want to call it Karate Kid any more," Chan said. "They want to call it The Kung Fu Kid." He quickly changed topics and unfortunately didn't add any more about as to why this change was being made.

I just can't get any excitement going for this remake. All the sequels were just remakes of the original idea anyway. What do you think of the rename?

Gemma Arteton to star in Clash of the Titans remake

Gemma Arterton is set to star as the demi-goddess Io in Louis Leterrier’s forthcoming remake of Clash Of The Titans. Arterton showed up at the Jameson Empire Awards to pick up the Best Newcomer award. She spoke to Empire magazine about the sword and sandals remake.

“My part is... the coolest part,” she laughed. “Io’s not in the original film. Perseus falls in love with her and then [CENSORED FOR TINY SPOILER]. It’s a really great part.”

According to Arterton, though, Io’s presence isn’t the only thing about the movie, which is, of course, a reimagining of the 1981 Harry Hamlin ‘classic’ in which Perseus embarks upon an epic quest, part of which involves killing the evil Medusa and the dreaded Kraken.

“The script is very different,” she continued. “Obviously the story is the story, but it’s much more about Perseus’ mission, and how he deals with being the son of Zeus, and things like that, so it feels a little more about him, and about the issues around that.”

Sam Worthington is on board as Perseus while Liam Neeson was reputed to have been offered the role of Zeus. However, given his current tragic circumstances, it’s not yet known if he will commit to the role.

First look at a battle in Neil Marshall's Centurion

I am looking forward to seeing Doomsday director Neil Marshall's upcoming Roman combat picture Centurion. There was the excellent behind the scenes featurette a few days ago. Now Quiet Earth had this fiery battle photo from the shoot and it does look pretty cool. A hint of Gladiator, some David Gemmell Drenai stuff and just general coolness.

The Damned United, 2009 - Movie Review

I watched this film at a preview screening and although there were no trailers, the film more than made up for it. Based on the popular book of the same name, the film charts the early career of the legendary and outspoken Football Manager Brian Clough. It simultaneously contrasts Clough's rise to glory as Manager of Derby County in the late sixties, with his disastrous subsequent appointment at local rivals Leeds United lasting only forty-four days.

Brought to the screen by a similar team as 'Frost/Nixon', it stars: Welsh actor Michael Sheen as Brian Clough; Timothy Spall as his long-suffering assistant manager and best friend Peter Taylor; Jim Broadbent as the snooty Derby County chairman, 'Uncle' Sam Longson and Colin Meaney as Clough's idol-turned-rival, former Leeds Manager Don Revie. British gems, the lot of them! Famous players are well represented in the cast, most notably by Stephen Graham as former Leeds Captain Billy Bremner.

Michael Sheen's Brian Clough is an entertaining, arrogant but likable character with self-destructive flaws. Obviously he has the best lines (unfortunately many of which feature in the trailer) and some of his best scenes are with Timothy Spall's Peter Taylor, who's friendship is severely tested as the events unfurl. Clough's vulnerability and insecurities are explored in his relationship with Taylor and the audience learn that only as a team do they conquer English football. Clough's apparent hatred for Revie stems from being snubbed by the latter at an early Cup match. This experience drives Clough's ambition to not only succeed, but to attempt to eclipse the architect of Leeds United's 'Golden Age'. Along the way we learn about the now familiar friction between the Manager and the Chairman, the task of signing players and the universal theme of pride coming before a fall (there's a football pun in there).

Set in the late sixties/early seventies and seamlessly interspersing the action with real footage and interviews, this film enables the audience to embrace the spirit of the times and appreciate the simplicity of 'the good old days' whilst still going on a journey with laughs and tension throughout. As with 'Frost/Nixon' the story caters for people with very little prior knowledge of the subject matter and as such, it can be enjoyed by football fans, history fans and film fans alike. Plus there isn't a huge amount of actual ball kicking by the cast, so people won't switch off. There is an obligatory montage, but it's nicely done and over quickly.

The only downside to this film is that it's a little bit short if anything, but it leaves you wanting more which can only be a good thing. There's a mild bit of comical swearing throughout, which is justified (and probably even toned down) given the situations the lead characters face.

To sum up, I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed 'Frost Nixon', Biopics, Football or quintessentially British films. This film isn't my favourite of the 2009, but is definitely getting a Champions League spot!
