MIckey Rourke to remake Mona Lisa

Another day another remake announced.

Mickey Rourke has signed on to star in a remake of classic 1980s British gangster film Mona Lisa.

The action will move to America and Rourke will play an ex-con who takes a job as a chauffeur for a high-class escort. Eva Green is in advanced negotiations to star opposite him.

Bob Hoskins and Cathy Tyson starred in the original 1986 film directed by Neil Jordan.

Larry Clark ("Kids," "Wassup Rockers") is writing and directing the remake.

The original was quite a small film and I think the tale will transfer quite well to an American setting. Plus Rourke is well suited for the role. Not sure about Eva Green playing the escort though.

Filming is set to begin in New York in July.

Franklyn - New photos from Meanwhile City

I've posted some posters and the trailer for the Gerald McMorrow directed film starring Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green, Sam Riley and Bernard Hill. Now we have lots of new photos to look at thanks to io9.

Franklyn is set between the parallel worlds of contemporary London and the futuristic metropolis of Meanwhile City, and weaves a tale of four souls, whose lives are intertwined by fate, romance and tragedy. As these worlds collide, a single bullet determines the destiny of these four characters.

Preest, a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Esser (Bernard Hill) is a broken man, searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London's homeless. Milo (Sam Riley) is a heartbroken thirty-something desperately trying to find a way back to the purity of first love. Emilia (Green) is a beautiful art student; her suicidal art projects are becoming increasingly more complex and deadly.

Christine: War My Love - The real life exploits of the female bond.

The story of beautiful wartime spy Christine Granville, who was Ian Fleming’s lover and the inspiration for the James Bond character Vesper Lynd, is to be made into a major film acording to The Daily Mail.

It is to be called Christine: War My Love, and is due begin filming in June. No word yet on who will be playing the lead but Kate Winslet is in the running as is the most recent Vesper Lynd, Eva Green. It will be directed by Agnieszka Holland, whose credits include Total Eclipse, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The movie follows the exploits of Polish countess Krystyna Skarbek, who adopted the name Christine Granville for her wartime exploits with Britain’s Special Operations Executive. She was awarded the George Medal for her work against the Gestapo and sounds like she was the female version of James Bond.

Her courageous actions, including a treacherous crossing into her native Poland from Hungary with the help of an Olympic skiing champion, helped saved countless lives.

After the war, she drifted into a series of affairs – including one with Fleming – before enrolling as a stewardess on a cruise ship where she met the man who was to murder her in 1952.

Ms Holland said: ‘Krystyna was almost certainly the most remarkable female spy of the Second World War. She was intelligent, courageous, seductive and bewitchingly attractive and men were willing to sacrifice everything for her and go to any lengths to have and keep her.’

Skarbek’s cloak-and-dagger exploits saw daring raids into occupied Poland, with forays into Egypt and Syria. Parachuted into occupied France in 1944, she took on the persona ‘Pauline Armand’ to rally the Resistance.

After the war, Skarbek apparently found it difficult to settle. She took a job as a stewardess on a liner between Southampton and Australia, where she befriended the man who would later kill her.

An inadequate loner and obsessive, Dennis Muldowney turned into a pest, leading to a final confrontation at a hotel in Kensington. In a fit of rage, Muldowney brutally stabbed her to death. She was 44. Muldowney was sentenced to death at the Old Bailey, declaring on the way to the gallows: ‘To kill is the final possession.’

All sounds pretty amazing stuff and I had heard nothing about her life before this. It should make for a cracking film.

New Dr Who and Bond girl go back to the Womb

Eva Green has signed to star in the futuristic drama Womb, Hungarian helmer Benedek Fliegauf’s first English-language film.

Produced by Roman Paul and Gerhard Meixner of Berlin-based Razor Film (“Waltz With Bashir”) and Andras Muhi of Inforg Studio Budapest, pic tells the story of a grieving widow, played by Green, who decides to clone her late husband. Matt Smith (who will replace David Tennant in the BBC’s “Dr. Who”) co-stars.

Fliegauf, who won a Golden Leopard in Locarno in 2007 for his experimental pic Milky Way, will begin production on the film in March on the North Sea coast.

“Womb is one of the most touching and impressive love stories we have read in recent times,” said Michael Weber, managing director of the Match Factory, which is handling international sales on the pic.

Is it just me or does that story sound familiar. Woman clones her dead husband....can't think why it's reminding me of something. Could it be Multiplicity where Michael Keaton clones himself to do jobs around the house...with hilarious consequences? Nope that's not it.

Think it must be some old school sci-fi story that has been absorbed into my brain box over the years. Maybe an old Tales of the Unexpected or a Future Shock from 2000AD. Anyone got any ideas what I'm getting at?

Franklyn - Trailer hits the web

I mentioned this back on the 5th September and today a trailer has finally appeared.

Ryan Phillippe plays a masked vigilante detective named Preest, who is searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Bernhard Hill plays Esser, a broken man who is searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London’s homeless. Sam Riley plays a heartbroken guy named Milo, who is desperately trying to find a way back to “the purity of first love.” And Eva Green plays an art student named Emilia whose suicidal artwork is “becoming increasingly more complex and deadly.”

Franklyn - Neo-noir set in Meanwhile City

Interesting sounding film. Franklyn, starring Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green, Sam Riley and Bernard Hill among others. Written and directed by Gerald McMorrow. The story of four lost souls in a futuristic London society where there is no separation between Church and State.

Quiet Earth have this description of it: Preest, a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Esser (Bernard Hill) is a broken man, searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London's homeless. Milo (Sam Riley) is a heartbroken thirty-something desperately trying to find a way back to the purity of first love. Emilia (Green) is a beautiful art student; her suicidal art projects are becoming increasingly more complex and deadly.

Looks like four intertwined stories and is probably not going to be a bundle of laughs, but does sound intriguing and the imagery seems rather Sandman and DC Vertigo in general. Suicidal art projects does sound a bit silly though. Surely you can only ever do the one?
