Batman 3 shooting next year? Gary Oldman thinks so

During the Book of Eli presentation at Comic-Con 2009, Gary Oldman was asked when we would be seeing a third Batman movie. He gave a surprising answer.

According to Oldman, a sequel to The Dark Knight is not only happening, but it begins shooting in 2010.
“The next batman is next year, so I think it is two years away. But you didn’t hear it from me.”
Surprising as Christopher Nolan has said he has not signed on for a thirs Batman film just yet and he is currently shooting the sci-fi of the mind film, Inception.

Those who where there said Oldman was not joking. Interesting news.

Expect his to be debunked or confirmed over the next few days.

Public Enemies - Press Conference Part 1 - Marion Cotillard

Yesterday I was at the Public Enemies press conference in London. It was fantastic. It's not everyday you get a chance to listen to Michael Mann, Marion Cotillard and Johnny Depp talk about their films. I was also lucky enough to ask a question of both Marion and Johnny. Who would have thought it!

They each came out separately and we had about 20 minutes to ask them questions. I will start of with Oscar winner, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and post Michael and Johnny's later today.

Before each one we were asked to keep our questions relevant to the film. A bit of a shame as I wanted to ask Marion about her work on Christopher Nolan's Inception. Oh well. Marion looked lovely in a long green dress. All of them came across as happy, confident and they all seemed to enjoy the questions. I managed to get a photo of them all, but the one for Marion was very blurred so I couldn't use it.
Why did you say yes to Public Enemies?

Because I’m a great fan of Michael Mann and when he asked me to star I couldn’t believe it and I was very happy. I met him and read this beautiful script.

How was it doing the American accent and how did you prepare for that?

It was a technical issue and it was very hard. When I started I thought it was not possible at all, but I really tried to do my best. Fortunately Billie was half French, although she’s not supposed to have French accent.

It’s very technical. You really have to work and work. Practice and using your whole face, jaw, tongue, body in a total different way. It was very interesting. There were hours and hour in front of a mirror with my vocal coach because you don’t think how you speak.

There were so many men in this film. How did you feel being on set in one of the few female roles? Did you feel excluded?

No, absolutely not. Michael Mann has a great respect for women. He’s surrounded by women in his life and I think that is why the women in his movies are very strong. They really have strong personalities and they have a very special place in all his movies so I felt really welcome.

Michael asked you to meet some gangster’s wives and girlfriends. How was that?

They were actually convicts wives some of them were not with gangsters. They were all so generous to share their stories, the very painful experiences they had. We spent a few hours together and it was very emotional because they were very emotional going through the full story of their life.

More than their stories and they were important, but what they felt when they told me their stories. They went back through all those feelings, fear and extreme pain because you don’t know what’s going to happen when you are alone. Some of them had kids

*at this point Marion was distracted by one of the Dictaphones in front of her causing her to laugh *

I could see and feel their pain and fears because you don’t know what’s going to happen the next day. It helped me a lot. You gather some emotions and feeling. It creates your character.

You said you didn’t know anything about Dillinger as all so you must have done a lot of research to find out about him. He’s an American folk hero. Is he known in France at all?

I’m not very sure. I think that my generation doesn’t know Dillinger and yeah I didn’t know anything about him. I didn’t even know his name. The first thing I read about him was the script and the book, Public Enemies. I didn’t do a lot of research about him. My research was more about the period, the American history, and the Indian history because Billie Frechette is half [Menominee] Indian. I really wanted to know about American culture and Indian culture. I knew about the era I learnt at school about the crisis in the Thirties, but I didn’t know that much about American history. What I read about Dillinger was just the script and the book. I watched a lot of pictures of him, but my research was on the Thirties and the American culture.

I never talked about Dillinger with anyone. He may be well known with French people.

Was the experience of working with Michael Mann more than you anticipated?

When I met him, right away, when I came in his office I felt that there was a connection between the two of us. I don’t know how to explain it. I really love him as a person and a director. I wanted to be perfect for him. I wanted to give the best of my best. I don’t know if I did. He was inspirational.

Then it was my turn. I was the gentleman in the third row!

What was it like filming the interrogation scene? How much preparation did you have to do?

The difficulty of the scene was that when you have a very emotional violent scene to do you think of the technique and I had to keep the mid-western accent. It was very difficult, as I had to let it go but at the same time not think about.

I love extreme scenes. I would say that after this kind of scene I feel empty but also fulfilled. I think it may feel like when you do sports and you have a competition like the 100m. After that you feel tired and empty but fulfilled because you did something that was intense. I really love it. It’s not difficult but it is technical.

How deeply did Christian Bale and everyone stay in character? He apparantly kept his accent on between scenes

I didn’t work with him too closely. When we were filming everything was in the Thirties. I think there is something that stays with you while you film. For example if you have an accent you keep it between the scenes, as it is hard to get there. Sometimes it is better to stay there even when you are not shooting, because if you totally get out of it to come back is the same journey. Before I did La Vie en Rose I thought it was dangerous to stay in character and more than that I thought it was kind of ridiculous. I had a judgement because I didn’t know that it’s really hard to go back there. After that my opinion, it was not even an opinion it was a stupid judgement because I didn’t know what I was talking about. Now I know I didn’t force myself to stay in character. It was easy. I couldn’t stop between takes because it was so much work to get there. I really do understand this now.

Thank to Marek at Way to Blue for inviting me and for MPC for the screening.

Christopher Nolan's Inception has started filming

NolanFans.com found the above picture of Leonardo DiCaprio, Christopher Nolan and Ken Watanabe in a Japanese magazine. I'm not sure if Leonardo and Ken are in costume or if it is just for the photo.

The photo containing the Inception director, and two of its stars, was taken on June 15th in Tokyo, Japan (one of the reported filming locations of Inception). According to reports, filming is already underway in that country, which is only one of six reported countries the film is scheduled to shoot in.
As well as Japan Inception will also film in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Morocco, Tangiers and Canada (as mentioned here). It has been described as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind” and as as well as Leo and Watanabe the cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy.

Inception - Christopher Nolan's sci-fi film has a $200 million budget

A Sun source confirmed that Leonardo DiCaprio will be heading to Alberta, Canada this November to shoot scenes for the new Christopher Nolan film, Inception.

While the psychological sci-fi thriller is filming in five different countries, a significant portion of the $200-million movie will be shot in Kananaskis.

"It's not going to be just a two-day shoot," said the source.

"It's not just some CBC mini-series. It's pretty substantial.

"These guys are going to spend more money before lunchtime than most (networks) will spend on a series. It's as big a movie as has ever been shot here."

DiCaprio headlines the film's star-studded cast as a CEO. It also stars Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, Canadian actress Ellen Page, Tom Hardy (Bronson), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy and Michael Caine. Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, The Dark Knight) will play the film's villain, a man who is blackmailing DiCaprio.

Director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) has already been to Calgary twice to look at possible locations.

Nolan scouted nearby foothills and mountainous areas by helicopter and is said to have chosen Fortress Mountain (that's the one in the photo above) as the main Alberta location.

The Inception script, also written by Nolan, has been kept under tight wraps although it has been described by Warner Bros. studio as "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind."

I do love the fact hardly anything is know about the actual plot of the film. From what little I do know it seems to be giving off a Philip K. Dick kind of vibe - businessmen from rival companies, set within the architecture of the mind.

The movie is slated for a July 2010 release.

Ken Watanabe to be the big bad in Christopher Nolan's Inception

Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins) and Tom Hardy (Bronson, Star Trek: Nemesis) have signed on for Christopher Nolan's Inception for Warner Bros., starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story was written by Nolan and is a contemporary sci-fi action film set within the architecture of the mind, with DiCaprio as a CEO type. Watanabe will play the film's villain, a man who is blackmailing DiCaprio. Hardy is a member of DiCaprio's team.

The duo join a cast that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Michael Caine and Marion Cotillard.

Nolan and the studio are aiming for a summer shoot ahead of a 2010 release.

Bale will be Batman again. Nolan may not.

We all know how good The Dark Knight was and how well it did at the box office. IT was the second film with Christian Bale as the Bat and Christopher Nolan as the puppet master. Since then there have been many rumours as to what actors and characters would be in the third film. Now some interesting news has come to light via Total Film. They spoke with star Christian Bale who talked about a The Dark Knight follow-up.
"Will we do a third movie? It's got to be the right story. You can't make something like The Dark Knight and then come out with something disappointing.

"I would like it if people say, 'You'll never make a good third movie.' I say, 'OK, let's make a third movie in that case, let's prove them wrong. But that's just me. The fact is, I have to! I've signed up! Chris doesn't. So I'm in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn't want to!"

Would you want to see a Batman film not directed by Christopher Nolan? If he didn't come back for the third film who would you want to see direct it?

Christopher Nolan's sci-fi Inception gets Page, Cotillard and Murphy

Warner Bros. is in talks with Ellen Page (Juno), Marion Cotillard (Public Enemies) and Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, 28 Days Later) to join the cast of "Inception," Christopher Nolan's latest project which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

In keeping with most things associated with Nolan's project, a veil of secrecy exists over loglines, although it is described as a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within "the architecture of the mind."

However, as the casting process progresses, details are beginning to leak out. DiCaprio's character is mentioned as a CEO-type, while Cotillard would play his wife. Page is a young college grad student and DiCaprio's sidekick.

James Franco was in talks to join the project but had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict with Universal's comedy "Your Highness." Nolan and the studio are aiming for a summer shoot ahead of a 2010 release.

UPDATED: Leonardo DiCaprio NOT to be a Button Man

UPDATE: Doh! Looks like I fell victim to an unsubstantiated rumour regarding this. MTV have this to say about it:

The upcoming film “Button Man” is not related in any way to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” — and, contrary to earlier reports, it’s not related to Leonardo DiCaprio, either.

Entertainment Weekly is crying foul on Internet rumors that the “Body of Lies” actor would star in the “2000 A.D.” comic property. The news site is reporting that Leo is not attached to “Button Man” according to studio representatives. The rumor originated from a listing in Production Weekly, a print magazine that provides information on Hollywood projects.

While DiCaprio’s involvement is now officially scrapped, there is movement on “Button Man.” A DreamWorks representative tells Entertainment Weekly that “Eagle Eye” screenwriter Hillary Seitz will pen the screenplay for the comic book adaptation.

So there you have it. If DiCaprio is not to be a Button Man, who could you see in the role?

The original post is below:

According to Production Weekly, Button Man focuses on Harry Exton, an ex-mercenary that participates in a violent underground sport known as “the game.” Exton is one of several killers — appropriately called ‘button men’ — that define victory by slaying their opponent or claiming the first two joints of their victim’s finger. When Harry decides to retire from the sport, he learns the hard way that his own survival is anything but a game.

DiCaprio is expected to star as Exton in the “2000 A.D.” comic book adaptation, from the same publishers of the in-development “Judge Dredd” relaunch. The actor-producer has snatched up the rights to several graphic novel properties as of late, such as the manga franchises “Ninja Scroll” and “Akira” — though he says that he won’t star in either film.

The erstwhile “Titanic” star has also found himself at the center of some higher profile comic book rumors in the last year. Alongside “Inglourious Basterds” actor Brad Pitt, DiCaprio has been mentioned as a contender for Steve Rogers in “The First Avenger: Captain America.”

Other than DiCaprio’s newly announced “Button Man” and his attachment to “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “Inception,” not much is known about the Academy Award nominated actor’s involvement in comic book movie properties.

Batman is the next Harry Potter

/film have the news that during today’s Time Warner earnings call, CEO Jeff Bewkes compared the Batman series to the Harry Potter film franchise, saying that they hope to release a long line of sequels.

“We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago. Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy taht very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 - 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”

What do you reckon? Good news or bad? Christopher Nolan will do another one but will he do any more? Will Zack Snyder step in? Will it all end up with The Dark Knight Returns and an older Batman returning from retirement? It would be so good to see that showdown with Superman.

Who would you like to see directing Batman once Nolan steps down?

Liam Neeson talks about The Dark Knight and his possible return as Ra’s Al Ghul

MTV caught up with Neeson during the Sundance Film Festival, and got his thoughts on both “The Dark Knight” and a potential return for his “immortal” character from the first film.

“You never know,” said Neeson of the likelihood that he’ll reprise the role of Ra’s Al Ghul. When asked whether Nolan has his number, Neeson answered, “He does, actually.”

In discussing “Dark Knight,” Neeson said “the tapestry of the story was quite wonderful,” but added that if he had one issue with the film, it was that it was “too long.”

The Random Rumour Round-Up - Two-Face, Linda Hamilton returns to Terminator, Eva Longoria not the Wasp?

WARNING: As per the heading these are all rumours running around the internet.

Two-Face could be in the next Batman Film

When MTV News caught up with “The Dark Knight” star on the Golden Globes red carpet, he was notably less fatalistic about the possibility of reprising his role as Harvey Dent/Two-Face in a sequel to the record-breaking film.

“I think Harvey — if he’s not dead — is in a serious coma,” stated Eckhart, “and I’m not sure he’s coming out. They might pull the plug on him.” Seemingly firm words, right? Except even the notion that his alter-ego is still alive is a clear departure from previous statements where the actor was perfectly fine confirming Harvey’s death at the business end of a freefalling drop.

We know from our recent interview with producer Charles Roven that screenwriters Christopher Nolan and David Goyer have begun brainstorming ideas for a third “Batman” film…could something out of that have led to Eckhart’s about-face on Two-Face? His wink-wink-nod-nod answer seems to suggest that something else may be at play. Source - MTV

Linda Hamilton could be returning to the Terminator universe?

This rumor comes from ComingSoon, who also attended the special presentation held yesterday in New York City for Terminator Salvation.

In their chat with McG afterward, the director said that one option they came up with for the opening of the movie would be to have Sarah Connor do a voiceover. From there, ComingSoon spins it into a rumor with no real facts.

We know Linda Hamilton played Sarah Connor in the first two Terminator movies, but that doesn't mean they actually need her to do the voiceover, although I admit it would be cool to hear. Maybe they can convince her to record just a quick voiceover? Source - First Showing

Eva Longoria says she won't be in the Avengers?

E! Online’s Ryan Seacrest earned some geek cred when he cornered actress Eva Longoria on the Golden Globe's red carpet to ask about the rumor that she’s in the running for a role in Marvel’s much-anticipated superhero team-up film, “The Avengers.”

While photos of Longoria leaving Marvel Studios HQ with a stack of “Avengers” stories last year sparked speculation that she was researching a role in the film — with most guesses casting her as original Avengers team member Wasp — Longoria told Seacrest that the rumor was “not true.”

However, Longoria said she’d love to play a role in “The Avengers” if the opportunity presented itself. Source - MTV

What do you make of those rumours? Which ones do you want to be true? Which would work the best?

Will the Joker be recast for the next Batman film?

MTV have the news that during last night’s People’s Choice Awards, “The Dark Knight” producer Chuck Roven cleared up some of the speculation surrounding the sequel to the celebrated Batman blockbuster, telling MTV that director Christopher Nolan and writer David Goyer are indeed “talking and thinking” about the next film.

With regards who the big bad will be in the next film you may have to read between the lines as to what Roven said next.

“We have to separate the actors from the role,” said Roven when asked whether they would’ve done anything different with Heath Ledger’s villainous Joker if they knew the actor wouldn’t be reprising the role.

“On a personal level, Heath was a friend of mine. We had worked together before ‘The Dark Knight,’ but I still think that ‘The Dark Knight’ is its own thing, and we have to separate them,” added Roven.

Does this mean that the Joker is going to be in the next film and will, obviously, have to be recast? Is he just being covering the bases? Would you want to see the Joker in the third Nolan Batman film? Discuss this more over in the Bat Forum.

Is this Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin...?

...of course it isn't as once again Christopher Nolan is still to sign on, there is no story yet and nothin to say what characters will be used. No doubt the image is a fake but it's a good one showing what Philip Seymour Hoffman could look like as the Penguin in the next Batman film.

Cinemablend had the image and it does look good. How would you feel about Hoffman as The Penguin or would you rather it was the other Hoffman (as in Dustin)?

Discuss: Batman 3 rumours - Who could play the bad guys?

Bearing in mind Christopher Nolan has not yet signed up for the third Batman film, no story has been decided, no script has been written, no casting has been made and no characters have been chosen, the old casting rumours keep on coming.

Remember all of this is basically the internet throwing up whatever it can think of, but it does get the old brain juices flowing.

Nolan has made a point of saying he wouldn't have any super powers in his Batman films so people have been saying things will stay realistic. However Nolan did set up the fact that things keep escalating once the Batman hit the scene so it could go a little madder now that the Joker and Two-Face have appeared in Gotham. The great thing about Batman's bad guys is that most of them have no powers they are just disfigured freaks.

The Riddler keeps getting mentioned and we have had Johnny Depp mentioned for that. Now I have heard that Eddie Murphy could play him, as Axel Foley said "Get the fuck out of here!" springs to mind with that rumour. If they do use The Riddler I hope they have him as a buttoned up obsessive kind of criminal who out thinks the Bat. Depp would be cool in the part, but Crispin Glover could bring a weirdness to the part. Guy Ritchie could be another interesting choice and his work with Nolan on Memento shows he can play the obsessive rather well.

Catwoman is another one that many people think will be in the next film. If she is I'd like to see her as the thief she is and not as the big bad. Maybe a cameo or just in the background. Although if they do use her she'll probably end up as the love interest in the film. Rumours as to who would play her have included Cher, Maggie Gyllenhall, Angelina Jolie and most recently Rachel Weisz. Basically, any actress people can think of but I would like to see Carla Gugino take the part of Selina Kyle.

The Penguin. In the comics he has recently been portrayed as an arms dealer, criminal kingpin and a go to kind of guy for illegal goods. All of these would be okay for the next film and again, he wouldn't necessarily have to be the main villian. Philip Seymour Hoffman is the main rumour for this one and I can't really think of anyone better for the part.

The Ventriloquist. Not one of the most well known of Batman's adversaries but a good one none the less. Like many of the villains in Gotham he has major mental problems. Basically it is an old bloke with a dummy called Scarface. The old bloke is totally unassuming and the dummy is the one running things and treated as if he is a real person. Anthony Hopkins would be great in the role and he has previous experience with ventriloquist dummies controlling people in the film Magic.

Ice Man. Now we are getting into the realms of the super power although his ice gun could be explained as advance technology. Maybe stolen from Wayne's company or he was working on it for Wayne when the accident happened. Only person I can see in this part is Patrick Stewart who would be amazing.

Robin. I think there would be a massive outpouring of rage if it was announced that Robin was to be in the next film which is a shame. If done right Robin is a great character and works really well. Unfortunately the memories of Robin in the old TV series reins supreme. Shia Labeouf is the one rumoured for this part but they are missing the point on the old rumour mill. Robin should only be a young teenager or slightly younger, who loses his parents and is taken under Bruce's wing and is eventually adopted by him as his son. Maybe the kid out of The Spiderwick Chronicles would be good in the role.

There are many other characters in the Batverse - Bane, Black Mask, Poison Ivy, Firefly, Clayface, Harley Quinn to name a few more so Christopher Nolan will be spoilt for choice when he eventually sits down to write the next film.

Everything above is just a rumour. Let me know who you would want to see in the next Batman film and who could play them.

The Dark Knight is nearing the $1 billion dollar mark, with a grand total of $997,535,317 in box office receipts (as of Monday morning). The film has made $528,535,317 domestically (just $72,252,871 below Titanic’ record) and $469,000,000 overseas.

That is a whole lot of money.

Warner Bros is planning a big rerelease of the film in January so the amount of money it makes will just keep going up and up. I think it is going to take some beating.

Warner Bros have also released Christopher and Jonah Nolan’s screenplay online for Awards Consideration. You can download it for free on WarnerBros.com.

Christopher Nolan discusses Batman, Heath Ledger and Superman

Christopher Nolan has been talking to L.A. Times Hero Complex about why we won't be seeing his Batman meeting the Justice League and Superman anytime soon. He also discusses Heath Ledgers performance and the possibility of a third Batman movie.

"I don’t think our Batman, our Gotham, lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization,” explained Nolan in the Hero Complex piece. “If you think of ‘Batman Begins’ and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position — we didn’t address it directly in the film, but we did take the position philosophically — that superheroes simply don’t exist. If they did, if Bruce [Wayne] knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that’s a completely different decision that he’s making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It’s a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation.”

With regards Heath Ledger possibly being nominated for an Oscar.

“I think the thing that has always been important to me in light of Heath’s death is the responsibility I’ve felt to his work,” said Nolan. “I felt a great wave of relief, really, as people first started to see the performance and it was clear that they were getting the performance. It’s easy to forget with everything that’s happened what an enormous challenge it was for Heath to take on this iconic role. It’s been extremely satisfying for all of us already. Anything that adds to that would be wonderful.”

Boucher asks the director, given how important the franchise has become to Warner Bros., if he’s been under pressure from the studio to come back for an encore.

“[Warner Bros. are] being extremely gracious,” Nolan responded. “I have a very good relationship with the studio. They know that I really needed to go on holiday and take some time to figure what I want to do next. They’ve been very respectful of that, which is terrific and one of the reasons I enjoy working with Warner Bros.”

What do you think of that?
