UPDATED: Leonardo DiCaprio NOT to be a Button Man

UPDATE: Doh! Looks like I fell victim to an unsubstantiated rumour regarding this. MTV have this to say about it:

The upcoming film “Button Man” is not related in any way to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” — and, contrary to earlier reports, it’s not related to Leonardo DiCaprio, either.

Entertainment Weekly is crying foul on Internet rumors that the “Body of Lies” actor would star in the “2000 A.D.” comic property. The news site is reporting that Leo is not attached to “Button Man” according to studio representatives. The rumor originated from a listing in Production Weekly, a print magazine that provides information on Hollywood projects.

While DiCaprio’s involvement is now officially scrapped, there is movement on “Button Man.” A DreamWorks representative tells Entertainment Weekly that “Eagle Eye” screenwriter Hillary Seitz will pen the screenplay for the comic book adaptation.

So there you have it. If DiCaprio is not to be a Button Man, who could you see in the role?

The original post is below:

According to Production Weekly, Button Man focuses on Harry Exton, an ex-mercenary that participates in a violent underground sport known as “the game.” Exton is one of several killers — appropriately called ‘button men’ — that define victory by slaying their opponent or claiming the first two joints of their victim’s finger. When Harry decides to retire from the sport, he learns the hard way that his own survival is anything but a game.

DiCaprio is expected to star as Exton in the “2000 A.D.” comic book adaptation, from the same publishers of the in-development “Judge Dredd” relaunch. The actor-producer has snatched up the rights to several graphic novel properties as of late, such as the manga franchises “Ninja Scroll” and “Akira” — though he says that he won’t star in either film.

The erstwhile “Titanic” star has also found himself at the center of some higher profile comic book rumors in the last year. Alongside “Inglourious Basterds” actor Brad Pitt, DiCaprio has been mentioned as a contender for Steve Rogers in “The First Avenger: Captain America.”

Other than DiCaprio’s newly announced “Button Man” and his attachment to “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “Inception,” not much is known about the Academy Award nominated actor’s involvement in comic book movie properties.

Danny Boyle talks about 28 Months Later, remaking Lady Vengeance, Judge Dredd and Porno

Empire Online recently held a webchat with Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle who, while talking about future projects, revealed that he's been asked to direct an English-language remake of Chan-wook Park's Lady Vengeance. Here are some of the snippets from the chat below, where he also discusses the 28 Days Later franchise and more.

Kinema asks: What do you think of the Asian Film Industry, mainly South Korea and Hong Kong? A lot of South Korean movies are being made into US Remakes. Would you ever consider remaking a good South Korean movie, maybe Oldboy?

Seriously, I was just asked to do a remake of Lady Vengeance, the one after Oldboy. My favourite is Audition.

Ruffcut asks: How close did you come to directing Alien 4?

Oh my God, that one. Very close actually. In fact I met Sigourney and Winona, which was a great pleasure. Had chips – French fries I should say – with Winona. But I backed out of it. I was terrified of the special effects.

Film Brain asks: What was it like to make something like Slumdog Millionaire after the rather dark Sunshine?

Bits of Slumdog are quite dark early on. It's not quite the feelgood movie of the decade all the way through. But the contrast between the isolation of outer space and the 21+ million inhabitants of Mumbai was welcome.

thebestnameshavegone asks: Is there any news regarding Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad Trilogy which you were mooted to be involved with?

Oh God, yeah. It's fallen apart. Frank Cotrell Boyce (Millions) and I were going to do it for DreamWorks but sadly no longer. Sorry about that - wonderful novel(s).

brent71195 asks: Any plans for the Judge Dredd movie Danny? Are you a fan or is it just something that interests you?

Where has this come from? Someone asked me about Judge Dredd the other day! Well... ha! I hated the last version of it; I can't imagine the next one will be any better.

djimi42 asks: What is the future of the 28 Days franchise? Is there any possibility you could direct 28 Months Later?

Yeah, we've got a good idea for the third one. Very strange. And sadly we've run out of time to tell you about it...

blackmores hat asks: Can I ask what's the state of play on Porno?

Just waiting for the original actors to age. Help them if you can. Take them out drinking - get them away from the spas and those moisturisers.

Judge Dredd concept art - Looks very nice

I mentioned back near the start of December that Rebellion where trying to get a new Judge Dredd film going. Well now it looks as if things are moving forward with this concept art found by io9.
This lovely concept art was done by the comic book artist Jock who has worked on 2000AD, The Losers, Green Arrow: Year One and Hellblazer. Looks mighty fine indeed and looks as if they will be sticking closer to the comic than Stallone's Dredd movie ever did.

Current suggestion over in the Forum as to who could play Dredd are Christian Bale, Jason Statham, Bruce Campbell (he has the chin), Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, The Rock and Billy Zane.

Is Judge Dredd heading back to the big screen?

We all remember the Sylvestor Stallone Judge Dredd movie from back in the day. Kind of not so good apart from the look and feel of Mega City One (plus there was a Hammerstein cameo). However looks as if there may be movement on a new 2000AD Judge Dredd film.

Mania has more on the story.

Ever since 2002, Rebellion (who holds the rights to the character) has been working to relaunch the film franchise. Back then they had ambitious plans to film back-to-back Dredd movies, In 2003 Shorline Entertainment got involved to finance the films with an eye on going into production that year. It didn't happen.

Well, now it appears that there's a new plan for bringing the Judge back to the big screen. Edward Mazmanian, he of the many and varied comic book movie groups on FaceBook, has uncovered info at ShowBizData.com about this new development.

According to the info, which he's duplciated at the Judge Dredd Movie Group, the new film is a joint production between DNA Films and Fox Searchlight. Allon Reich ('28 Weeks Later) is producing. Alex Garland ('28 Days Later', 'Sunshine'). The production is currently seeking a director.

Cool 2000AD Canvas Prints

I saw these over on Firebox and thought, "that's cool I wouldn't mind one of them." Then I thought hold on I could do something like that myself. Then I thought £89.95 a pop. I should be doing that and selling them. Then I thought,"I need more time."

Andy D has a piccy I did of Rogue Trooper hanging in his house. Chisholm has a Marv I painted and Jinja has a Gotham by Gaslight. Oh and Rich has a Spider Jerusalem. I must get them posted on the site. Fella's send me a photo of them when you can.
