Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter - New images

MTV Splashpage had these cool looking images from the forthcoming Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter DVD. There will be a super deluxe directer's cut version of Watchmen with this animated segment spliced in.
“Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter” — features the vocal talents of “300” star Gerard Butler — ships out tomorrow on DVD and Blu-ray, and includes the Minutemen pseudo-doc, “Under the Hood,” starring the cast from the film reprising their roles as the original do-gooders gone horribly bad. Along with the headlining movies, the 2-disc set also includes a first-look at “Green Lantern: First Flight,” and bonus featurettes “Story Within a Story: The Books of the Watchmen” which explores the comic-within-a-comic of “Watchmen,” “The Why of the Watchmen” by Zack Snyder, and “The Two Bernies” showing a scene from “Watchmen” not seen in theaters (the latter two only available on the Blu-ray edition of the set).

Dave Gibbons has finished his Watchmen Commentary

Rich Johnston over at Lying in the Gutters had this little piece of info regarding the Watchmen DVD.

Dave Gibbons confirmed to a packed audience at a Borders bookstore this week that he has already completed his DVD commentary for the mega-directors-cut of "Watchmen" that includes the “Black Freighter" story integrated into the main film. Maybe we can expect the finished product sooner rather than later?

Watchmen Cocktails - I said Blue Bols!!

Still thirsty for more Watchmen related stuff? Groaning at the dreadful punnage?

Well fret no more as the good people over at Isotope Comics have come up with some Watchmen inspired cocktails. Here are a couple of them (remember kids no drinking alcohol until your reach the recommended age for your country, state, or Mega City Block).

Full Frontal Manhattan

Those who have already seen the movie or read the book will want to start their boozing off with this tribute to Dr. Manhattan's... (ahem)... full-frontal blueness!

2 oz Bombay Sapphire Gin
1 oz Hiram Walker Blue Curacao
1/2 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
3 dashes Regan's Orange Bitters

Shaken and served up. The Isotope staff prefers this cocktail to be served with a little backlighting for best blue glow effect.

The Comedian

Here's a great follow-up to that blue-hued cosmic adventure... a drink of pure nihilism! But be warned, this one is sure to rough you up a bit, just like the drink's namesake, The Comedian.

2 oz Yukon Jack Canadian Whiskey
Dr. Pepper

Fill a tall glass with ice and feel free to go heavy on the Yukon Jack. Top off with as little Dr. Pepper as you dare. Garnish with a slice of lemon and a drop of blood in honor of that Watchmen smileyface button you've been bootlegging.

Black Freighter

Because it wouldn't be complete without a little pirate adventure!

2 oz Gosling's Black Seal Dark Rum
3/4 oz Grand Marnier
1/2 oz Hiram Walker Creme De Cacao Dark

Combine over ice and stir. Too many of these, and your night might end up on the cutting room floor of your memory just like the Black Freighter scenes that were cut from the movie. Hope it doesn't get its own DVD!

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter Preview

This cool little featurette shows some footage from Tales of the Black Freighter along with the voice of Gerard Butler. That's the comic book story that is intertwined with the goings on in Watchmen. It is being released separately on DVD, Blu-Ray, and iTunes on March 24th. However, Zack Snyder has said their will be a complete Watchmen Directors Cut that will have the Black Freighter tale in the mix.

Watchmen - News on the Director's Cut and Black Freighter Edition on DVD

Film School Rejects had this news about Zack Snyder's plans for a director's cut DVD of Watchmen and how he will also release a version with Tales of the Black Freighter cut into it.
Summer/July: Director’s Cut. This cut will feature “99% of what we shot,” footage which Zack Snyder said he liked. The run time on this edition will be just over 3 hours long, compared to the 2:35ish run time of the theatrical version. It will be more violent, more sexy, and have more naked Dr. Manhattan. Also included will be entire scenes excised from the movie for time.

Fall/Last Quarter: The Black Freighter Edition. This title may not be the final title, but it is how Snyder identified it. He told us that they shot all the Ins and Outs of The Black Freighter pieces from the comic book, which for those of you who haven’t read it, mostly revolve around a boy and newsstand salesman. You can see these characters in the film, but they don’t have an impact on the story. The big news is that The Black Freighter, the animated movie, will be cut into the film. The animated film is said to be 22minutes long which, with the In and Out shots, will bump the presentation to about 3hours and 25minutes. Snyder referred to this release as the “fetishistic and kind of crazy” release, as it is so complete.

All sounds pretty good for fans of Watchmen. Just got to wait until 6th March now to see it on the big screen. By the way that's the French Watchmen poster that has just been released.

Out of interest those of you who are not comic fans or have never read Watchmen are you excited about this film or do you feel it looks like a pile of slow-mo rubbish?

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter - Trailer

This is the bit of the Watchmen comic (comic within the comic) that isn't going to be in the cinema release but will be in a super dooper DVD epic in a few months no doubt. In the meantime you can buy it as a stand alone DVD soon. Here's the trailer. Let me know what you think of it.

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter - Details of the DVD and screen shots

Warner Bros have now announced the release of Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Tales of the Black Freighter was the comic book within the Watchmen comic. All very meta plus it was very dark and twisted - lots of dead bodies, insanity, sharks and nastiness. The reasoning behind having a pirate comic in the Watchmen Universe was simply because in a world of superheroes why have superhero comics?

The image below shows what's one the disc along with some screenshots. Looks very, very nice and Gerard Butler has provided his voice.

Also on the DVD/Blu-ray is Hollis Mason’s tell-all live-action expose on the MAsked Men of Watchmen titled Under The Hood, a featurette titled “Story Within A Story: The Books of The Watchmen” which takes a look at the comic book within the comic book, and a first Look at DC’s Animated Green Lantern DVD. The Blu-ray release features additional content including a featurette called “The WHY of Watchmen” featuring director Zack Snyder and The Two Bernies, a deleted scene from Watchmen which was not included in the theatrical cut of the film, and a digital copy of the film.

Personally I'll probably hold out for the all singing all dancing Watchmen DVD which will no doubt show up with the Black Freighter tale mixed in with the full film.

The New Frontiersman - New viral site for Watchmen and The Black Freighter will be rated R

A new viral site for Zack Snyder's Watchmen has been set up. It's called The New Frontiersman and is based on the conspiracy theory magazine in the Alan Moore comic that Rorschach dwells upon.

Only the photo above on the site at the moment but /film say it will be getting lots more content beginning next week.
RopesofSilicon is also reporting that the Watchmen spin-off animated movie Tales of the Black Freighter has already been given an R-Rating by the MPAA for Violent and Grisly Images.

Watchmen running out of time, but the DVD will be lengthy

MTV have news on the running time for the Watchmen movie and some news about what other cuts and extras will be on the DVD.

The final length of the theatrical version of “Watchmen” isn’t quite finalized, but director Zack Snyder and producer Deborah Snyder are getting close, the husband-and-wife team recently told SciFi Wire. Further, while the director’s cut of the film has been finalized (around a hefty 3 hours, 10 minutes), there are plans for a “hardcore” version of “Watchmen” that will integrate the “Tales of the Black Freighter” animated comic with the live-action film, according to the duo.

“We’re getting really close,” said Deborah. “We’re at two hours and 35 minutes [for the theatrical cut].”

Along with sharing some details on their progress cutting the film down to theater length (Snyder’s previous directorial project, “300,” came in just under 2 hours), the director shared some details about his plans for integrating the “Black Freighter” animated feature with the live-action “Watchmen” film.

In the “Watchmen” graphic novel, “Black Freighter” is a comic-within-a-comic tale of a shipwrecked seaman who is desperate to get home before a pirate ship arrives on his family’s shores, and is read by one of the characters throughout the story. It provides a constant comparative element to the goings-on in the overarching superhero story, and Zack Snyder previously announced he’d be filming an animated version of “Black Freighter” to be released as a companion DVD to the film.

“The ‘Black Freighter’ version of the movie that we’re working on–which has the ins and outs of the Black Freighter comic book woven through it, with an animated version of the Black Freighter–will be about three hours and 40 minutes,” explained Zack. “So there’s a huge epic version of ‘Watchmen,’ which will probably come out after the movie’s theatrical release, for hardcore [fans].”
