Tim Burton talks about Alice in Wonderland and a certain Mr Depp turns up

Johnny Depp appeared in the final moments of Burton's Alice presentation at Comic-Con on thursday. Burton referred to him as his imaginary friend who follows him everywhere. Depp walked onstage, screaming ensued and all he got to say was "Hey. Happy to be here."

Thanks to Pam for sending me the news.

Tim Burtons to start shooting Dark Shadows soon

While talking about his new Alice in Wonderland film Tim Burton got onto the subject of his adaption of the vampire infested soap opera, Dark Shadows.

“That’s something that [Depp and I] both love and are excited about,” the director told MTV News. “When I’m done with this (Alice) I’ll definitely focus on that.”

Shadows” will be based on the ‘60s soap opera of the same name, an ABC daytime TV show that incorporated elements of gothic romance, science fiction and supernatural phenomena like ghosts, zombies and vampires. Depp will reportedly play vampire Barnabas Collins.

“It’s another challenge because it was such a weird soap opera,” Burton explained. “Part of the energy of it was the tone and weirdness of it. That’s our challenge, to try to capture that vibe.”
That vibe was part campy melodrama, part dead serious—and decidedly odd—storytelling. Which direction does Burton plan on going?

“It’s always a fine line,”
he said. “That remains to be seen. That’s a question and a challenge we talk about a lot. I haven’t arrived at the answer. That’s definitely a main issue, the tone and the vibe of it because as we all know melodrama can cross over. It’s one of the more interesting things about it.”

Alice in Wonderland - More photos

I know that we have seen photos of them before but here are slightly more detailed pics of the costumes and look for Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland. Above is Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Below is Mia Wasikowska as Alice (with a white rabbit no less) and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen.
As previously mentioned this is more of a sequel to the original tale - Alice, now 17 years old, as she escapes from a snooty party and follows a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl, the one who had visited the magical land ten years prior. But Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she?

Johnny Depp talks Dark Shadows and The Mad Hatter

While talking at a recent press conference in LA for Public Enemies, Johnny Depp spoke about some of his other projects. Frosty of the excellent Collider got the details. Here is what Depp had to say about Dark Shadows, the remake of the old American TV show.
“‘Dark Shadows’ is happening. Tim is working on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which is obviously quite a large piece of work there. So when Tim is done with ‘Alice’ and we get the script, which is very, very close, in order we’ll probably attack it next year. It’s exciting, very exciting. It’s like a lifelong dream for me. I loved the show when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins posters when I was five or six. I’m very excited to do it.”
This also seems to confirm that Tim Burton is attached to direct as previous news cast doubt on that.

Then Depp was asked about what research he had done for his role of the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
Well, certainly the book. The book is the basis for everything. There are little mysteries, little clues in the book that I found fascinating that were keys to at least my understanding of the Mad Hatter, like him saying, “I’m investigating that begin with the letter M.” That was huge for me because when you do a little digging you realize you’re talking about a hatter, a man who made hats and if you go back and look at some of the historical hatters there’s that term that this guy or that guy is as mad as a hatter. There was a reason for that and the reason for that was mercury poisoning. So I found out what the M was and why they went nuts. So that became a huge thing. Then it was just kind of what I saw and what I thought the guy should look like. I made my little weird drawings and water colors and brought them to Tim [Burton] and he brought me his weird little drawings and water colors and they were not dissimilar [laughs]. You could’ve put them right together and they were pretty darn close. There’s a lot of color and brightness and then de-saturation in The Hatter. He’s like a mood ring I suppose.
Thanks to Pam for sending me the link and the photo. Are you excited about Alice in Wonderland? How about Dark Shadows? I've never seen it but it does intrigue me.

Mia as Alice and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee & Tweedledum

Earlier today I posted the photos of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathway as the Mad Hatter, Red Queen and White Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. FilmDrunk have the photo of Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Movies.ie has come across this photo of Matt Lucas (Little Britain) as both Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

I personally don't find it as impressive looking as the previous pictures.

Alice in Wonderland - First proper look at Tim Burton's Wonderland.

There have been hints and teases as to how Tim Burton's adaption of the Lewis Caroll classic would look. There was nothing definite until now. Below are character posters of The Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and The White Queen (Anne Hathaway).
They finished shooting after just 40 days the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D.
The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember.
Mia Wasikowska plays Alice. In the top photo you can see the White Rabbit, voiced by Michael Sheen. All in all it is looking very nice. However, I've never been a fan of the story. One of those things that always irritated me a little. I will probably still go and see the film and will marvel at the look of it all, but it does not fill me with as much joy as it does some people.

9 - Brilliant poster for rag doll post-apocalyptic film

Here is a great poster for Shane Acker's 9, the animated movie featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Christopher Plummer, and Martin Landau.

9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which our very humanity is threatened. A group of rag dolls living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9, who may be the key to their survival.

The film is also rated PG-13 which means it will be able to match the darkness set up for this post-apocalyptic tale.

Be sure to check out Shane Acker's award winning animated short, More.

Alan Rickman talks about Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

There is a great interview with Alan Rickman over on The University Observer. He talks about many of his film roles, but in particular he mentions a little bit more about his role as the Caterpillar in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.
“When selecting roles, you just try and do what you didn’t just do.”

It seems to be with this mantra in tow that Rickman chose his next role – a caterpillar. Rickman explains that he has joined the macabre circus that is Tim Burton’s distorted adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s fantastical tale, Alice in Wonderland, having worked with the eccentric director in the grisly musical, Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Rickman explains that, as seems to be the norm with Burton, production for this work is nothing short of surreal. “Well, I believe what is going to happen is it will be my head on an animated caterpillar. I mean, Tim Burton just has a mind like a fairground. I aim to do everything he ever does. I am a crawling sycophant to him!”

Alice in Wonderland is set to be released in 2010, but Rickman relays the difficulties of working on a child’s film by saying, “Well, we’re fighting with Disney at the moment… They are worried about having a character [the caterpillar] that smokes,” he adds, dramatically rolling his eyes to heaven.

Typical of the big studios to try and change one of the main features of the character. Didn't the caterpillar spoke in their animated version?

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland logo, the Tron logo and The King of the Elves based on a Philip K Dick short story

Disney had a presentation at ShoWest recently and had a whole host of logos and release dates on show. Thanks to Pam for sending me the above pic.

Of interest is the logo for Alice in Wonderland in the center along with Toy Story 3. The new Tron (was Tron 2) logo in the 2011/2012 column.
Don't think I have heard anything about the Newt, Rapunzel and The Bear and the Bow, but they all sound good. King of the Elves looks very interesting as, according to IMDB, it is based on a story by Philip K Dick. Wasn't aware of any such story, but a quick look on Wikipedia tells me the following:
Based on Philip K. Dick's 1953 short story fantasy King of the Elves, the film is about a band of elves and one dwarf living in the modern-day Mississippi Delta who name a local man their king after he helps save them from an evil troll
Sounds cool.

Depp's Dark Shadow may not fall on Tim Burton

Warner Bros.' big screen version of the TV vampire soap opera cult classic Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins, is reportedly gearing up for production, but the schedule of its rumored director Tim Burton appears to have impacted the project.
MTV recently caught up with Sam Sarkar, director of development for Depp's production company Infinitum, who advised them that Dark Shadows "is very active. ... The studio will be making some announcements regarding it pretty soon. Very soon, probably."

Sarkar was coy, however, when asked about Burton, neither confirming nor denying his involvement with the project. The reason for that appears to lie in Wonderland.

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that the start date for filming Dark Shadows may have to be postponed because of production on Burton's Alice in Wonderland, also starring Depp, which Disney has slated for release on March 5, 2010. Unfortunately, Warners has already reserved studio space to shoot Dark Shadows, with a Depp insider telling DHD, "It is our intention to still start the movie in the fall. We're trying to work it out. ... And Tim Burton is Johnny's first and only choice to direct."
Thanks to Pam for sending me this.

Our first proper glimpse through the looking glass at Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

D23 is a Disney fan club that launched earlier this week and as part of a membership, you get a subscription to their quarterly magazine filled with photography and articles on all-things Disney. Featured in this first issue is an article on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which is currently in-production aiming for a March 5th, 2010 release. It included these photos that give us our first proper glimpse at the new adaption.

Abovie is Mia Wasikowska as Alice as well as a look at the Mad Hatter's tea party table. The Tim Burton Collective are the good people who scanned the photos for us all to see.

First Showing also had this quote from the magazine by Tim Burton:

"It's kind of a mixture of some distorted live action and animation. I can't
relate it to anything because I'm not sure what to relate it to. It's kind of
new territory for me,"

Also starring in the film are Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway plays the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen, Alan Rickman plays the Caterpillar, Crispin Glover plays the The Knave of Hearts, Stephen Fry plays the Cheshire Cat. Christopher Lee is also starring.

I've never been a big fan of the Alice in Wonderland tale, but I love many of Tim Burton's other films and he has got a great cast involved so I'll definitely give it a watch when it comes out. All in all it is shaping up to be a most curious piece of film.

Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter and early shots of Toy Story 3 shown to Disney Stock Holders

Lucky people who own stock in Disney got a couple of sneak peaks at upcoming features according to Dark Horizons.

A first real glimpse of Johnny Depp's look as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s upcoming “Alice in Wonderland” kicked off the Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday.

The Carpetbagger had a description: "Victorian top hat, crimped hair that sticks straight out, and swirl of brightly colored make-up on his eyes, cheeks and lips that resembled the blur of a pinwheel blowing in the breeze".

A 3-D screening of "Up" along with early footage of "Toy Story 3" which was deemed "jaw-droppingly good" by an attendee were screened as well during a visit to Pixar’s corporate campus in Emeryville on Monday.

I can't wait to see a photo to go with that description of Johnny Depp's character.

The picture I used on this post is just one I found on Google. Nothing to do with Depp's version of the character.

Alice in Wonderland - Some cool casting news for Tim Burton's latest.

Just a quick post before I head to bed.

/film have the news that Michael Sheen may be playing the White Rabbit in Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland and, even better, Stephen Fry will be playing the Cheshire Cat. Pretty cool casting if it's true.

Night all.

I Love Sarah Jane - Short film set in a zombie apocalypse

Nope note Sarah Jane from the Dr Who universe. I Love Sarah Jane is a short film (just over 11 minutes long) about one boys love for a girl called Sarah Jane and his fight through a zombie horde to be with her.

Not only is it a great short film by Spencer Susser, but it also stars Mia Wasikowska who is playing Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

Jimbo (Brad Ashby) is 13. All he can think about is one girl, Sarah Jane. And no matter what stands in his way - bullies, violence, chaos, zombies - nothing is going to stop him from finding a way into her world.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 rumours - What's true and what's not

Terry Rossio, co-screenwriter for all three Pirates of the Caribbean films thus far, and is working on the fourth, has made an announcement and denied the circulating rumors about Pirates of the Caribbean 4. The rumors have alleged that Johnny Depp is making a whopping $56 million for the fourth film to Sacha Baron Cohen and Russell Brand co-starring to Tim Burton directing. Rossio clears things up:

For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp.

Some pretty funny stuff, though. Sacha Cohen? Tim Burton? Studios are way too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing.

The only thing that has been officially announced so far is that Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth film.No production date has been set.

Captain Jack could be getting told what to do by Tim "It's all in the reflexes" Burton*

Cinema Blend have news of a rumour stirring in the briny ocean. Aye, Jim lad it be just a rumour. Oo Ahh, a bottle of rum and all that malarkey.

I mentioned a while ago that Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is going to happen and Johnny Depp is happy to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Todays rumour deals with the nebulous possibility that Tim Burton could possible maybe supposedly be directing the fourth installment. This could be pretty cool and the fact Depp is still involved may bring his mate Burton on board. The rumour also mentions a few other things:

1. The film could deal with Jack's search for the Fountain of Youth.

2. Captain Jack's brother could be part of the story and the names Sacha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand are being bandied about. I think it would be wrong of them to go with a copy of Captain Jack which is what Russell Brand would possibly do.

3. Geoffrey Rush and Gore Verbinski (director of the first 3) are also said to return but if the Burton rumour is true then I can't see what Gore would do.

What do you think of the rumour? Would you like to see a Tim Burton Pirate's movie? What would you like to see in the next one?

*Yes I know it was Jack Burton who said "It's all in the reflexes" I just wanted to get the quote in somewhere. I was trying the Capt Jack, (tim) Burton thing but it just wasn't working.
