Khan - Mantra, war cry? You decide

Last week Machine Project in Echo Park showed Daniel Martinco's "15-minute meticulously re-spliced creation in a never-ending loop that transforms a moment" from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan "into one of anguish (or snickering for the the audience) into a meditation, maybe even a mantra. This below clip "doesn't begin to do justice to the size, sound and hypnotic power of the real thing." -- from an LA Weekly piece that appeared last Thursday.

How would Shatner have appeared in J.J. Abrams Star Trek?

As we all know, William Shatner turned down the chance to have a cameo in the new Star Trek film as he didn't think it was a big enough part for him. Fair enough. That's his opinion, but it may have been a mistake on his part.

io9 spoke to the Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and asked them about how Shatner's Kirk would have appeared in the film. There may be spoilers ahead.
Orci: We wrote it, it was in the script.

Kurtzman: The very last scene when Spock and Spock meet each other, finally. And elder Spock is convincing young Spock that he couldn't interfere, because it would have diverted [Kirk and Spock] away from their friendship. And that their friendship is the key to the whole sort of shebang.

Orci: He gave him a recorded message from Kirk.

Kurtzman: He [elder Spock] said, "Don't take my word for it." And he handed him [younger Spock] a little holographic device and it projected Shatner. It was basically a Happy Birthday wish knowing that Spock was going to go off to Romulus, and Kirk would probably be dead by the time...

Orci: It turned into a voiceover, at the end of the movie.

Kurtzman: So It was a nod too, but it ultimately felt like a cameo, in a way that wasn't.

Would Shatner's appearance have added to the film?

Augmented Reality Star Trek Experience

To promote the international release of STAR TREK on May 8th, Paramount Pictures International (PPI) is today launching ‘Experience The Enterprise’; a groundbreaking augmented reality (AR) application placing a 3D interactive version of the Starship Enterprise in the palm of your hand.

Visitors to http://www.experience-the-enterprise.com/ will be given the opportunity to take an extensive five minute tour of the Enterprise, including testing the ship’s weapons systems, impulse engines and warp drive. ‘

Experience The Enterprise is built using augmented reality (AR) technology, which combines real world and computer-generated data to bring a 3D interactive version of the Starship Enterprise to life, on your desktop or in the palm of your hand.

Anybody with a webcam can take a tour of the Enterprise using the kind of futuristic technology that sits at the heart of perhaps the most popular science-fiction franchise of all time. Once underway, you are given a ‘cadet holo-simulation’ by Starfleet, the Academy in which new recruits Kirk, Spock and McCoy are enrolled at the start of the new film.

This is the first time AR has been used to bring a major film release to life in this way. The application itself was constructed using the original 3D model of the Enterprise appearing in the film, as well as featuring an array of special effects direct from the production. It was developed for PPI by creative marketing agency Picture Production Company (PPC), working in conjunction with augmented reality specialists Total Immersion.

Star Trek Fan Kit

I've just been sent the link to the new Star Trek fan kit. Cheers Arno. Lots of wallpapers, icons and things like that ready for the J J Abrams film next month.

To promote the release of Star Trek, Paramount Pictures International and the Picture Production Company have created a first of its kind ‘social media microsite’. Launched today, the new site will house a wealth of Star Trek-themed tools for fans to use on their profiles across the social web.

The social media microsite invites fans to express their allegiance to Star Trek, and Starfleet, using a variety of cool, creative and compelling customisation tools. Turning a profile picture into Captain Kirk or Spock, or grabbing a themed skin for your MySpace profile, blog or Twitter page are just some of ways fans can engage with the movie through http://www.startrekfankit.com/ww

There is also a wealth of content still to come including peelbacks, fan banners, iPhone content and also a live stream from the global premiere in Sydney.

Happy International Talk Like William Shatner Day

Maurice LaMarche is the voice of the Brain from Pinky & the Brain. He has some news for us:
In honor of William Shatner's 78th birthday tomorrow, 3/22/09, I am declaring March 22nd to be "International Talk Like William Shatner Day!" Hey, we have "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", and Shatner inspired a helluva lot more kids to be like Captain James T. Kirk than any who wanted to be some smelly, toothless, "arrr"-spouting frickin' pirate.

Now, since talking like our hero is a bit more challenging than walking around going, "Arrr", I've included the following video tutorial for your edification, filmed by producer Bill Biggar, on a loooong drive to the airport on L.A.'s fabulous 405 freeway. Enjoy, and remember, it's pronounced "sabotaaj", not, "sabotahj".

Could those who worship evil's might beware Chris Pine's power, Green Lantern's light!

There was a rumour a little while back that a crew member of the Star Ship Enteprise could be in the running for the most powerful weapon in the Universe - a Green Lantern's power ring. That person was Anton Yelchin (Chekov). The internet generally said, "What the..?!" Now it looks as if half of that rumour is totally incorrect. It won't be the weapons officer it's the Captain. Kirk to be exact.

IESB.net has posted a rumor that Star Trek's Chris Pine ("James T. Kirk") is being eyed as the title character in Warner Brothers' upcoming Green Lantern movie.

Pine would play Hal Jordan, a pilot who finds a powerful ring and its lantern-like battery when a spaceship crashes on Earth. Jordan is selected to succeed the craft's dying occupant as the next Green Lantern, a galactic guardian who is a member of an interstellar corps, the site reported, citing an anonymous source.

The movie has set up production offices and is on track to start shooting in September in Australia for the previously announced 17th December 2010 release date.

Pine is reportedly at the top of a list that also supposedly includes Terminator Salvation's Sam Worthington.

Neither Pine or Worthingtom seem Hal Jordanny enough. They are apparantly going for someone under 30 so Nathan Fillion and Aaron Eckhart are out. I just don't know. Would you be happy with Chris Pine as the Green Lantern of sector 2814? If not him who could it be?

Bottle Shock - New Quad Poster for Alan Rickman and Chris Pine's latest film

I posted the trailer for this last July. Now the new Quad poster has just come out. It stars Alan Rickman and the soon to be Captain Kirk, Chris Pine.

There are certain unforgettable moments in history when America has triumphed against long odds and proved itself to the world: Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon; the U.S. Men’s Hockey team beating the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics.

But one such moment has never received the recognition it deserves: In 1976, a small American winery sent shock waves through the wine industry by besting the exalted French wines in a blind tasting, putting California wines on the map for good.

Novice vintner Jim Barrett risked everything to realize his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted California Chardonnay. Meanwhile in Paris, struggling wine seller Steven Spurrier came up with an idea for a publicity stunt to help his floundering shop. Little did Spurrier and Barrett realize they were about to change the history of wine forever.

Directed by Randall Miller it also stars Bill Pullman and Eliza Dushku.

Star Trek - Live every day as if it could be your last, with ‘Red Shirt’ cologne.

First there was Sex Panther Aftershave from Anchorman. Now Star Trek are getting into the aftershave market.

Genki Wear, known for its licensed science fiction jewelry and perfumes, has produced what might be the most unusual Star Trek product ever: Star Trek colognes and perfume based on the original 1960s television show.

Genki Wear Star Trek Perfume - A trio of scents from the final frontier
There are three fragrances planned for 2009 with the monikers "Tiberius" "Red Shirt" and "Ponn Farr."

Tiberius
The Tiberius cologne, named in honor of the Mirror Universe James T. Kirk’s challenges users to "Boldly Go" with a perfume described as being spiked with "notes of freshness and sensuality." According to Genki Wear, the perfume has sweet citron zest, black pepper, and cedar as its top notes (top notes refers to those scents that are noticeable first) and warm vanilla, white musk, and sandalwood as its base notes (scents perceived last, usually about a half hour after application). Genki Wear promises that "Tiberius Cologne for men is difficult to define and impossible to refuse" which is also a pretty good description of the Mirror Kirk himself.

Red Shirt
Genki’s "Red Shirt" cologne (whose tag line "Because Tomorrow May Never Come" is priceless) celebrates the sacrifices of those often nameless crew of the USS Enterprise. Described appropriately as a cologne for those with a "devotion to living each day as it could be your last" the cologne has top notes of green mandarin, bergamot, and lavender, with base notes of leather and grey musk.

Both the Tiberius and Red Shirts are 100ml (3.4 oz) quality colognes built from long lasting fragrances for men, and will retail for $30-40 depending on the department or retail store.

Pon Farr
The most risqué titled of the new Star Trek fragrances is "Ponn Farr" which is a perfume designed to "drive him wild." It should only be used once every seven years (okay, that isn’t true). Named for the Vulcan mating ritual first introduced in the episode "Amok Time," this perfume is one of the newly designed products meant to appeal to female fans. More details and an image on Ponn Farr will be available soon.

Star Trek - Some more info on recent footage - Spoilers

ComingSoon has more details on the 20-ish minutes of Trek footage that screened for journalists recently. Apparently, in the first scene, where we see Kirk hit on Uhura, it starts out in rural Iowa, then a car zooms into a futuristic oasis that looks sort of like Las Vegas. There, Uhura orders a ton of drinks, and Kirk leans out from behind an ugly alien and comments that that's a big drink order for a woman. Uhura tells Kirk she's studying xenolinguistics, expecting him not to know what that means. And he impresses her by saying it's the study of alien languages. Then the cadets beat on Kirk, until Pike breaks it up by whistling. Kirk comments on how loud Pike can whistle. Later, they sit together and Pike lays it on thick, trying to recruit "genius-level offender" Kirk for the Federation, telling him he'll make officer in four years. Kirk rides his motorcycle through the cornfield the next day, then finds Pike and tells him he'll do it in three years instead. And then when Kirk tries to warn the Enterprise crew of the Romulan attack, it turns out Uhura speaks three dialects of Romulan. When he tells Captain Pike and second-in-command Spock his theory, Spock says "The cadet's reasoning is sound." In the third scene, when Old Spock meets Kirk, they also run into Scotty, who's been exiled to Vulcan because his experiments into using Transporter technology on a moving starship didn't work out so great. (He beamed an Admiral's beagle to who-knows-where.) Kirk tries to convince Old Spock to beam up to Enterprise with him, but Old Spock says it's not his destiny. When Kirk and Scotty beam up, Old Spock does the V-sign and says "Live long and prosper." In the fourth scene, the "Romulan drill on Vulcan" scene, Pike beams down to Vulcan, leaving Spock in command and making Kirk Spock's first officer. Then Pike, Kirk and Sulu are in a falling ship along with a redshirt named Olson. Kirk, Sulu and Olson parachute out of the ship to stop that drill, but Olson gets cocky and leaves it to the last minute to open his chute — with hilariously fatal results. [Coming Soon]
