Quentin Tarantino talks to Jonathan Ross

Another cool interview. Tarantino talks about Inglourious Basterds, Brad Pitt, romantic comedies (he enjoyed The Proposal), writing films, James Bond and why he picks the songs for his films. Keep watching until the very end as there is gun play and death!

This shows new footage from the film, with added focus on Brad Pitt's character, Lt. Aldo Raine.

Inglourious Basterds will be 1 minute longer and there may be sequels and prequels.

Inglourious Basterds is almost with us, but not after a little bit of tweaking in the editing room.

Eli Roth who plays Bear Jew in the film told MovieWeb that the film was going to be five to six minutes longer than the version that played at Cannes.

He also hinted that Quentin Tarantino has already planned, not only a sequel, but also a prequel that would reunite Bear Jew with Brad Pitt's Lt. Aldo Raine.

This is what Roth had to say about the new length of the theatrical version:
After Cannes, Quentin always said that he wanted to do some cutting, and pruning, and that he was going to be changing things. There was a lot of stuff left out before. He felt that he had over cut. There were certain scenes that were taken out for Cannes that will come back into the final version. Because it plays better like that. I think the final version of the film is five or six minutes longer than the version shown in Cannes. From what Quentin has told me, he has fleshed it out a little bit more. Cannes running length was at two hours and twenty-five minutes. I think this is a little over two hours and thirty minutes. Something close to that.
Quentin Tarantino has since said that the new cut is only a minute long, but that does help the film flow a little better. He spoke to BFDealMemo. "The movie is actually a minute longer, in running time, than it was in Cannes. It was 2:28, without end credits, and now it's 2:29, or 2:32 with end credits." That means it is now 149 minutes.

Roth also spoke about a possible sequel/prequel
Quentin has an entire universe planned out for Inglourious Basterds. With Aldo and Donny in Italy with a troop of black soliders. He has a whole prequel planned, and most of it is written. If the movie does well, he will make the prequel. I want to see a prequel. Both Brad and I want to be in it. Brad and I were in Cannes screaming, "Prequel, prequel, prequel!" He even has two sequels planned. He's not necessarily going to make these movies. But he has at least four our five stories centering on these characters that span through the fifties and sixties. He knows exactly where these characters are going. He has this whole universe mapped out in his head.
I can't wait to see this film. Just got to wait until 21st August.

Moneyball strikes out

Despite the fact that it was about to start production on Monday in Phoenix, Arizona, Columbia Pictures has halted work on Steven Soderbergh's upcoming major league baseball project Moneyball. The film, which was to star Brad Pitt, has been placed into "limited turnaround" by Columbia Picture's Amy Pascal. According to Variety, this gives Soderbergh a chance to set up the project at another studio. It is currently being shopped to both Warner Brothers and Paramount.

The decision to halt work on Moneyball came after Pascal read the final draft of the screenplay, written by Steve Zaillian with Soderbergh, and found it to be quite different than the original film she once championed. If another studio does not pick up the film by Monday, Columbia Pictures will look at replacing Soderbergh as the director. This could delay filming for quite sometime to come.

Moneyball is based on Michael Lewis' bestseller of the same name, with Pitt signed on to play Billy Beane, the former Major League phenom that undermined his playing career by taking a big paycheck before he was ready. The player resurfaced as Oakland A's general manager and found success fielding competitive teams for low cost, compared to the payrolls of league rivals like the New York Yankees. Soderbergh was set to use real ballplayers as actors. He also shot interviews with ballplayers for vignettes that were to be woven into the film.

Moneyball's fate will be decided on Monday.

Inglourious Basterds - 3 new clips from Tarantino's war film

The full 2 hours and 40 minutes of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds is premiering at Cannes . I don't have that, but Collider did have these three clips from the film.

The clips show Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) informing Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) of two recent developments in the operation.

Lt. Aldo Raine (Pitt) interrogating a German soldier about the locations of their camps and the artillery they have. He respectively declines the offer and decides to die for his country.

Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) telling Frederick Zoller (Daniel Brühl) how Jews are like rats.

Diane Kruger is a Basterd

Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as “The Basterds,” Raine’s squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own…

Odysseus will find you and will kill you.

Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the sword-and-sandal actioneer Odysseus according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Utilising the character from Homer's 'The Iliad' and 'The Odyssey', the story seems to skip almost all of the events of 'The Odyssey' which followed the journey home from Troy of the famed king of Ithaca - That means no Circe, no Cyclops, no Sirens etc.

In this incarnation the story begins upon his arrival home, only to discover it is under the brutal occupation of an invading force. He single-handedly defeats every last man and takes back his wife, his son and his kingdom.

That makes it sound like a cross between Taken, Die Hard, 300, Rambo and Point Blank. Actually Liam Neeson would make an excellent Odysseus.

Ann Peacock penned the script and Jonathan Liebesman is attached to direct once he wraps work on "Battle: Los Angeles". Gianni Nunnari is producing.

George Miller and Brad Pitt are also developing a futuristic outer space version of 'The Odyssey' for the studio that I mentioned back in October last year.

Who do you think would be good to play the hero Odysseus? Do you like the idea of using this part of the tale for a film?

Inglourious Basterds Photos

Vanity Fair have some excellent photos for Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. The photo above has, from the left Mélanie Laurent as Shosanna Dreyfus, Christopher Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa, Omar Doom as P.F.C. Omar Ulmer, Daniel Brühl as Frederick Zoller, Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth as Sergeant Donny Donowitz, Diane Kruger Bridget von Hammersmark, and Brad Pitt as the Nazi-hunting Lieutenant Aldo Raine.

Is it just me or does Taratino look like his character in From Dusk Til Dawn when he has vamped out?

Be sure to check out the rest of the photos over on Vanity Fair.

Classic Scene: Se7en - The ending

Do not watch if you have never seen the film. This is a great scene and an amazing ending to a film. Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey are all brilliant.

Mark Millar has seen Kick-Ass. He says it kicks bottom

"'Kick Ass' will make $400 million at the box office." So said Mark Millar, writer and creator of the Kick-Ass comic. He had just returned from a trip to London where he screened 'Watchmen' and then saw a cut of his own movie at the production offices. He goes on "I loved 'Watchmen'...but I'm absolutely convinced Kick-Ass is going to be the biggest comic-based movie this year."

"The insane sales on the book suggest we've stumbled onto something here, tapped into an idea people wanted to see, and I think that same madness is going to carry over into the mainstream audience for the movie. Matthew sent me eight minutes of the picture last week and the energy in this thing, stuff I'd just never seen in cinema before, literally made me lose Tuesday and Wednesday at work. I just watched the clips over and over and this same feeling hit me like a juggernaut when I saw vast chunks of the picture in the editing suite. NOTHING can prepare you for Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz) in particular. People are going to lose their shit when this comes out. I knew it was going to be good, but this is about four hundred times better than I even imagined and I can't wait until you guys see the first trailer in a short while.
What made it especially fun is that I watched a chunk of it with the marketing people drafted in later in the afternoon. These were three industry people who have worked on everything from Hulk and Wanted to romantic comedies for the various studios and their reaction was hilarious. Their eyes went wide, their jaws dropped and they kept looking at us, giggling and looking as excited as twelve year olds. I'm telling you, boys and girls, we are ONTO something here.

I. Cannot. Bloody. Wait.

Brad Pitt was over two weeks back and also lost his mind when he saw this. Buzz around the studios is great, Matthew releasing 40 mins to several if these guys in the last few weeks and studio heads losing their minds. After EVERYBODY turning it down (unless we heavily edited the scripts) we now have these suckas exactly where we want them. We've remained resolute, making exactly the kind of film we WANTED to make and I could not be more happy with the finished result. Big props to Matthew, Jane and Tarquin for making this all real and not buckling to the studio system."

Aaron Johnson stars as Kick-Ass and it also features Nicholas Cage, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Matthew Vaughn is directing.

Obviously it is his creation and he's great at bigging up his stuff so I'm taking all this with a grain of salt. However, it may well have the gore quotient for the fan boys out there. I have enjoyed the comic, but I can't see what it could have in it that we have never seen before. Maybe it would help if the comic book series was actually finished. Mind you I can't wait to see John Romita Jr's animated segment in the film. I wonder if Nicholas Cage will be in his good or bad phase in this?
