Mickey Rourke has signed on to star in a remake of classic 1980s British gangster film Mona Lisa.
The action will move to America and Rourke will play an ex-con who takes a job as a chauffeur for a high-class escort. Eva Green is in advanced negotiations to star opposite him.
Bob Hoskins and Cathy Tyson starred in the original 1986 film directed by Neil Jordan.
Larry Clark ("Kids," "Wassup Rockers") is writing and directing the remake.
The original was quite a small film and I think the tale will transfer quite well to an American setting. Plus Rourke is well suited for the role. Not sure about Eva Green playing the escort though.
Filming is set to begin in New York in July.
How do you feel about yet another remake? Do you think this one will work well?

I'm very, very skeptical. I think Bob Hoskins' performance in Mona Lisa (Academy Award nominated!) is one of the all-time great acting jobs. You empathize with him despite his inability to understand what's happening or make good decisions EVER.
The film is also second only to Taxi Driver for ugly, ugly streetscapes (Director Neil Jordan hired real prostitutes).
I'm dubious, yet the idea of seeing Eva Green in bondage gear intrigues me.
Peter Serafinowicz does an amazing riff on the film at about 1:15 seconds in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scMx4Esz7dk
