Bruce Lee Biopic Trilogy planned

In a story from Variety it appears that a three-part biopic about martial arts legend Bruce Lee is going to be made. The family of Lee is putting their full support behind the project.

Lee died 36 years ago this week.

Currently, Lee's family is working with China's J.A. Media on a film titled Bruce Lee. The film will go into production this October. Tony Leung Ka-fai will be playing Lee's father. Other cast members are currently up in the air.

Directing this three part epic will be Zhang Yimou.

The first film is slated to be released on November 27, 2010 which is the 70th anniversary of Lee's birth.

"We've read many books and seen many movies about Bruce Lee, but there are many inaccuracies in them," stated Bruce Lee's brother Robert.

The last Bruce Lee biopic was Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story starring Jason Scott Lee. This trilogy sounds like it may be quite a bit better.

Raging Phoenix - You will believe in a kick-ass hip hop martial arts girl

Jeeja Yanin (aka Jija Yanin) star of Chocolate made a big impression in her debut martial arts film. Instead of being an autistic martial arts lady the taekwondo-trained actress will be mixing up romance and some form of hip-hop dancing into her screen fighting performance in Raging Phoenix.

The Last Airbender - Trailer

This is the official teaser trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, the live action movie based on Avatar the Last Airbender.

It certainly looks a lot better than Dragonball Evolution and has a similar tone to the original cartoon. If anything the long shot of all the ships reminds me of John Woo's Red Cliff. It definitely has the potential to look epic. All depends upon how good the main kid is at acting I suppose.

You can have a better look at Aang and Dev Patel as Zuko in this photo.

What do you reckon? Good or bad?

Cool Kung Fu Animation

Animator Mike Rodriguez did this wonderful CG short film/demo reel. It took him just less than 4 months to complete it, from concept to final product except for the music and the sound samples.

The Storm Warriors (Storm Riders 2)

This is an upcoming 2009 Hong Kong martial arts film produced and directed by the Pang Brothers. It is the second live-action film adaptation of screenwriter Ma Wing-Shing's manhua Fung Wan, following the 1998 film The Storm Riders. The Pangs have stated that the film is not a direct sequel to The Storm Riders, but more of a stand-alone film with a separate storyline. The Storm Warriors is also known by its English-language working title, The Storm Riders II, a title that was changed in order to avoid copyright disputes. Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok respectively reprise their roles as Wind and Cloud, who this time find themselves up against Lord Godless (Simon Yam), a ruthless Japanese warlord bent on invading China.

For the film, the Pangs were inspired by Fung Wan's popular Japanese Invasion story arc The Death Battle. The Storm Warriors was shot primarily in Bangkok, Thailand, and marks the first Chinese film to be shot in bluescreen and on custom-made sets. The film is expected to be released in Hong Kong on 17 December 2009.

Thanks to krajczynski for letting me know about this.

Kung Fu Joe - A hint of Beastie Boys Sabotage, a bit of kung fu, stir and there you have it

Kung Fu Joe, martial artist and private detective, encounters a group of bizarre characters harassing a local shopkeeper. Led by a monstrous Hunchback, these evil-doers are intent on strong arming the shop owner into selling their doughnuts. In a battle of strength and skill, Joe makes short work of the group who flee the scene.

Joe’s actions draw the attention of the Police Detective, an old nemesis, who is looking for clues about these odd characters and their nefarious purposes. A self-confident loner, Joe refuses to help. He is later visited in a dream by the Kung Fu Master, who warns him that danger is imminent and he must join forces with others to stop this evil threat.

The investigation into these peculiar men begins as Joe and the Detective hit the streets. They are led to a bakery that produces the doughnuts that are being pushed on the local populace. Joe and the Detective draw a confession from the baker that the hunchback forces him to include the unknown ingredient “Soylent Green” in the doughnuts.

Our hero receives another visit from the mysterious Femme Fatale, who is also interested in the source of Soylent Green. She wants to be kept in the loop on his investigation and pays him handsomely to keep her informed -- but Joe smells trouble.

Joe and the Detective find the source of Soylent Green at a factory outside of town, a factory thought to be abandoned long ago. Joe investigates alone, to the chagrin of the Detective, and discovers that a Mad Scientist is responsible for producing the mind control drug. Joe is captured by the henchmen and subdued by the Mad Scientist’s superhuman villain, French Man.

At the same time, the Detective succumbs to his need for doughnuts and, in the process, consumes Soylent Green. His weakness is exploited and he is brought under the control of the Mad Scientist. All seems lost for the forces of good when Kung Fu Joe is robbed for his Kung Fu strength when his head is shaved by the henchmen and he is dumped in the street.

A vision of the Kung Fu Master appears, urging a greatly weakened Joe to seek out the Pirate Master, Captain Morgan. Under his tutelage, Joe learns the secret ways of Pirate Style Kung Fu and readies himself to take on the Mad Scientist and his minions.

In an epic battle, Kung Fu Joe breaks into the Mad Scientist’s lair and frees the Detective from the effects of Soylent Green. The two fight side by side against the henchmen and defeat them. In a prolonged battle, Joe uses his newfound skills to best French Man, destroy his baguettes and bring the fight to the Mad Scientist. The Mad Scientist is captured, and Joe exposes the treacherous Femme Fatale, sending her over to the Detective.

Ninja - That's all you need to know.

Scott Adkins is the actor / stuntman / martial artist who is portraying Deadpool / Weapon XI (along with Ryan Reynolds of course) in the forthcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine - I mentioned that a while back. He has starred in The Bourne Ultimatum, Unleashed (Danny the Dog), The Medallion, The Pink Panther, Hollyoaks and Holby City. He gets around. That's him below.
Now his time has come to play the lead in a film.
  • Will it be a romantic comedy?
  • Maybe a film looking into the depths of one man's soul?
  • Or could it be a film where he plays a kick-ass Ninja?
Pick one of those three and see if you are right.
You guessed it. Option 3. He will be starring in Isaac Florentine's upcoming martial arts extravaganza, Ninja. What's not to love about that title.
A westerner named Casey (Adkins), studying Ninjutsu in Japan, is asked by the Sensei to return to New York to protect the legendary Yoroi Bitsu, an armored chest that contains the weapons of the last Koga Ninja.
Great synopsis as well. Tells you everything you need to know. Quiet Earth dug up the photos on this post (they have a few more so check them out as well) and they show that it will look lovely as well as having kick-ass Ninja action.

The Karate Kid is Dead. Long Live the Kung-Fu Kid.

Don't worry Ralph Macchio is still alive and kicking. This is all about the proposed remake of the original 1984 classic that so many of us grew up with. Jaden Smith (Will's kid) is down as the kid and Jackie Chan is going to be Mr Miyagi. Plus the action has moved to Beijing. That is all old news of course.

Jackie Chan has let slip that this remake is actually going to be called Kung Fu Kid, not Karate Kid.

"They don't want to call it Karate Kid any more," Chan said. "They want to call it The Kung Fu Kid." He quickly changed topics and unfortunately didn't add any more about as to why this change was being made.

I just can't get any excitement going for this remake. All the sequels were just remakes of the original idea anyway. What do you think of the rename?

Warrior - Nick Nolte enters the world of mixed martial arts

Lionsgate and director Gavin O'Connor have set Nick Nolte, Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Morrison to star in "Warrior," a drama set in the world of mixed martial arts fighting. Production begins in April in Pittsburgh.
Nolte plays an ex-Vietnam vet boxer-turned-steel mill worker whose family was torn apart by his alcoholism; the now-sober and remorseful dad welcomes back his youngest son (Hardy) and trains him to compete in a mixed martial arts tournament. He and his older brother, played by Edgerton, are on a collision course in the ring.

O'Connor wrote the script with Anthony Tambakis, and the helmer will produce with brother Greg O'Connor.

Hardy can currently be seen in "Bronson" and previously starred in "Layer Cake", "RocknRolla" and "Star Trek: Nemesis" and Edgerton just starred in "The Waiting City" and "The Truth About Men." Morrison, who stars in the Fox series "House," will next be seen in the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek."

O'Connor had originally set Nolte to play the patriarch in his last film, "Pride and Glory," but the actor bowed out because of a knee problem and Jon Voight stepped in. Nolte was last seen in "Tropic Thunder."

Shinjuku Incident - Jackie Chan vs The Yakuza. Is this a return to old school Chan?

Here is the trailer for Shinjuku Incident. Jackie Chan stars as a Chinese refugee who ends up in Tokyo and gets embroiled in the local Yakuza gang culture.

Directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Yee Tung-Shing (Full Throttle, Lost in Time, One Nite in Mongkok, Protégé). The screenplay was co-written by Yee Tung-Shing and Chun Tin Nam (Crime Story, Seven Swords, The Warlords, and An Empress and the Warriors).

What do you reckon? Are we seeing the Jackie Chan we all loved before he started doing the watered down Hollywood films?
