Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Andy Serkis' Ian Dury gets his Blockheads

Back in January I posted part of an interview with Andy Serkis where he mentioned he would be playing punk legend Ian Dury in a biopic due to start filming this month.

Now the film has a title, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, and will be directed by Mat Whitecross reports Variety.

It has also gained an excellent cast. Naomi Harris ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), Ray Winstone ("The Departed"), Olivia Williams ("The Sixth Sense"), Noel Clarke (TV's "Doctor Who"), Toby Jones ("Infamous"), MacKenzie Crook ("Pirates of the Caribbean") and Bill Milner ("Son of Rambow") .

Arthur Darvill, James Jagger, Tom Hughes, Shakraj Soornack, Clifford Samuel and Joe Kennedy are also set to play Dury's band members the Blockheads.

Paul Viragh penned the script, Damian Jones is producing and shooting kicks off May 3rd in London.

No word yet on whether Andy Serkis will be portraying Ian Dury through the wonders of motion capture :)

It's from the big screen version of the BBC series Edge of Darkness. Mel plays a policeman called Thomas Craven who while looking into the murder of his activist daughter uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence . The original had many shady dealings involving radioactive waste, ghosts, and strange black flowers. You can read more about the original series plot over on Wikipedia.

Ray Winstone is also in the film (playing the role that De Niro turned down) as a CIA agent who is assigned to cover up the murder. Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro, Casino Royale) is directing it.

The original BBC series was a cracking show and I hope the film keeps the weirdness that developed throughout the series. Anyone else watch the original show? What did you think of it and what do you think the film will be like?

We're The Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner, so unless you want a kickin'...

Fox Searchlight has halted production on "The Sweeney", a film adaptation of the classic British series, fearing the film will disentergare upon release everywhere but the U.K due to the lack of an A-list star.

Though the studio were circling Ray Winstone ("The Departed") and the up-and-coming Michael Fassbender ("Inglorious Bastards") for the lead roles, they quickly came to the realization that a bigger name was going to be needed if they wanted the film to actually last more than a week in theaters.

Rather than continue with pre-production in the hopes of nabbing a big name at the last minute, the powers-that-be mutually agreed to step back and wait. They are still hoping to go into production next year. Cult writer-director Nick Love remains attached to direct.
