The Losers and Freddy Krueger to go head to head in 2010

It looks as if the Comedian and Rorschach will be battling it out in the box office next year.

According to Box Office Mojo, the adaption of DC Comics The Losers will hit theaters on 16th April 2010. This is the same release date as New Line’s A Nightmare on Elm Street

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earle Haley are the leading men of The Losers and Nightmare.

As far as I was aware The Losers had yet to start filming so it is a bit of a surprise for the release date to be announced so soon.

2010 should be quite a good year for Comic Book lovers - The Losers, Iron Man 2, Jonah Hex and Scott Pilgrim vs The World announced so far.

Out of The Losers and The Nightmare on Elm Street remake which one are you most looking forward to?

Jackie Earle Haley teases us with Freddy Krueger's glove

Rorscach himself is playing Freddy Krueger in the new Nightmare on Elm Street film. I posted a photo of him in a striped top pre-burns and now he posted this photon on Twitter.

The film is currently filming in Chicago and I think this may be the most we get to see of Freddy for the moment.

A Nightmare on Elm Street - First look at Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy

Yes that is Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger before the scarring and glove. It appears to be part of the origin scene of the character.

The scene apparently featured Freddy playing hide and seek with the kids in the playground as they stole his hat and gloves. Every now and again, he'd pick up a gardening tool with his right hand and chase the kids around.

JoBlo had this and a few other exclusive photos.

Warner Bros.' New Line Cinema has hired veteran screenwriter Wesley Strick to pen the relaunch of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series.

The original Nightmare on Elm Street was written and directed by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The new project will keep the high school setting and delve deeper in the psychology of nightmares and Freddy Krueger himself.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is due out on 16th April 2010.

A Nightmare on Elm Street - Fan Made remake trailer

This is not produced by the Platinum Dunes' People.

It is a concept piece created by Christopher Johnson IV (and crew) for his agent Robert Depp at the Beverly Hecht Agency to demonstrate his passion and take for a 21st Century Freddy Krueger.

Depp is working to land an audition for Johnson with the Platinum Dunes camp and their casting people for the roll of Freddy.

Not too shabby. What are your thoughts on this?

The Thing prequel's Ronald Moore written script is binned. Elm Street reboot scribe is doing the rewrite

John Carpenter's The Thing is a true classic. Great story, great effects and just chock full of greatness. One of my favourite films of all time. Then there is the Battlestar Galactica reboot by Ronald D Moore. That was a brilliant reimagination of a camp 70s show. The new version was dark, deep and cool.

Put the two together and that is potential cinema gold. That was what was happening. Moore had written the script for a prequel to JCs The Thing. However, Hollywood being Hollywood this looks as if it has all changed.

Filmstalker and Bloody Disgusting have posted the news that the script was heading for a rewrite by Eric Heisserer. He is the chap who has written the script for the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot.

Now Heisserer has confirmed this on his own blog:
Yes, Matthijs and I are hard at work with the very smart team at Strike on
the prequel. We are all so much in love with Carpenter’s film, so protective of
it, we’re doing all we can to avoid stepping on its toes. I jumped at this job
because I hold the Carpenter adaptation to very high standards, and I knew it
would be a challenge to create a comparable companion piece. Sort of a “Nobody
better screw this up, especially me” mentality. Lucky for me, the people at
Strike and the director have the same standards.

This is a “from scratch” rewrite assignment for the most part, as was
my work on A Nightmare on Elm Street. I can’t say any more on that. I have the
highest respect for both Ron Moore and Wesley Strick.

I'm not sure what to make of this news. I was really excited to hear that Moore had turned in his script for the prequel (all about what happened at the Norwegian camp). I enjoyed BSG so thought he was the right man for the job. Now this "from scratch" rewrite comes out of nowhere. I can't really comment on Hesserer's work so I have no idea whether he will be good or bad. Glad that he says he wants to avoid stepping on any toes.

The fact that the studio has asked for the rewrite does worry me though. Unless the script is an absolute stinker the trend for studio's doing this is usually when the script is intelligent, cool and breaks the mold. Studio gets scared and asks for a rewrite to make it into a generic sci-fi slasher kind of deal.

That is just my opinion of course. What do you think about the rewrite news? What does this mean for the film?

The Random - The Matarese Circle, Christopher Nolan on Inception, Malkovich in Jonah Hex, Nightmare on Elm Street, 20,000 Leagues rewrite

Tom Cruise will be joining Denzel Washington in MGM's adaptation of Robert Ludlum's The Matarese Circle that is being directed by David Cronenberg and written by Wanted scribes Derek Haas and Michael Brandt. Cruise is in final negotiations to take on the role of the Russian spy Vasili Taleniekov, mortal enemy of American CIA operative Brandon Scofield, to be played by Washington. Wonder if he'll do the accent?

Christopher Nolan will be shooting another project before working on Batman 3. He will direct a sci-fi action film called Inception at Warner Brothers which will be released in the summer of 2010. Described as a "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind." Sounds deep and trippy, kind of like a Tron for the cerebellum! Warner Brothers is producing with Nolan's wife Emma Thomas. Have no fear on the fate of Batman as Nolan made The Prestige between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

John Malkovich will join Josh Brolin in the comic book western, Jonah Hex, which starts shooting in April. Malkovich will play the villain, Turnbull, a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War. He blames Hex, a former confederate soldier-turned-hardened bounty hunter and gunslinger.

News is out that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and New Line have hired a director for the reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street, bringing on Samuel Bayer to direct the reimagining of the Wes Craven classic. Bayer is best-known work is in commercials and music videos; he's won best director at MTV's VMAs and is responsible many classic videos, including Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Blind Melon's video for "No Rain."

Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Voltron) has been brought in to rewrite Bill Marsilii's draft script for Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo says The Hollywood Reporter. McG (Terminator: Salvation) remains attached to direct the big-budget underwater adventure which Sean Bailey is producing. I just hope the rewrite ends up better than the original script did.

Billy Bob Thornton as Freddy Kreueger

We've heard about the prospective Nightmare on Elm Street remake / reboot for quite a while, but there hasn't been any real progress. However, now that New Line has moved in under Warner Brothers, apparently the studio has gained some new interest in bringing Freddy Krueger back. Just like Jason and the new Friday the 13th, which is also now a Warner Brothers movie, Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes is the company that's hoping to restart the franchise. Ex-Freddy Robert Englund has been out promoting the release of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer on radio stations and mentioned to a few of them that he's heard the rumor that Billy Bob Thornton might play the new Freddy. He was on KROQ in Los Angeles last week, now a JoBlo listener says they heard it on Loveline as well.
