Hancock - Deleted scene that shows why Superman and Lois would never have a baby. Brodie in Mallrats was right!

I finally got to watch Hancock the other night and to be honest I enjoyed it. It wasn't anything brilliant but it made me chuckle and the first half was better than the last half. Will Smith was pretty good, but I get the feeling he felt stuck in his own image. I still couldn't figure out why Charlize Theron would stay with a mortal human and child knowing they would grow old and die, also why didn't she become a crime fighting hero as well? You could definitely tell that it had gone through a number of rewrites and it was sad to think about how great it could have been.

Here is the scene that was mentioned a while ago about Hancock getting busy with a lady and showing that everything about being superhuman is risky. Remember the original title for the screenplay was Tonight, He Comes.

As Brodie (Jason Lee) said in Mallrats, "It's impossible, Lois could never have Superman's baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry his child?"

Watchmen - Does it have a different ending?

Recently there have been test screenings of the Watchmen and apparantly the ending is slightly different. Apparantly it does not have a certain squid like feel to the ending. Not sure how I feel about that. /film go into a bit more detail.

Collider have an interview with Kevin Smith, where he talks about having seen Watchmen. Here is his response to the question about if the ending is different:

“It’s a little different. While it is a slight departure, it actually makes sense in the context of the story because it brings the characters back into it. It kind of makes the movie more about them by the end of it because of the switch they made. I would never say that Alan Moore fucked it up or something. I love the ending of the Watchmen comic book, but I think this ending works just as well.”

Kevin Smith talks Red State

Kevin Smith appeared on the Cinemablend podcast and listed off some of the reasons that studios might be afraid to greenlight his next film, Red State:

1. The Movie is ““decidedly non-commercial, it’s really fuckin bleak and dark, so bleak that it makes The Dark Knight look like Strawberry Shortcake.”

2. “There’s no character to root for.” … “It’s a series of insane, bad choices based on moral or immoral quandaries.”

3. “Everybody dies.”

4. “I do expect it to be a real film festival type film that will travel awhile.” … ” The only way it ever does business theatrically is if there’s like some kind of water cooler chat about it based on the festival showings.”

5. “They’re just like ‘there’s no audience for this movie.’ Like, nobody wants to see a movie this dark.”

“Based on all that nobody wants to write a check for it and I kind of get it. I’m not sitting here going ‘What? Why wouldn’t you want to finance a loser?’,” Smith says, later adding. “I’ve done comedy after comedy after comedy, and to do a movie that’s kind of 180 degrees away from that is, a test of sorts, where I get to see if I’m truly a filmmaker or just a dick and fart joke guy. No matter how it works out, I think I’d be content. Like, if it does work I’d be like ‘wow I know it! I am a filmmaker as well.’ If it doesn’t I’d just be like ‘alright I’m back to the dick and fart joke salt mine.”

Red State is a bit of a departure for Kevin Smith as it is described as "A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America." Sounds interesting. I just hope he manages to move the camera a bit! It's due out in 2010.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno, 2008 - Movie Review

To say I enjoyed Zack and Miri Make a Porno would be inaccurate. I loved it, every last second, right down to the mushy story about love and relationships that Kevin Smith gets to in the end. It's hilarious, it's saturated with sex, and it's charming, too. To be honest, I think Kevin Smith has actually taken a gigantic step forward, away from his previous films like Clerks and Dogma, and ventured into new comedic territory that used to only be reserved for Judd Apatow. I thought Seth Rogen might not be able to keep up his consistently strong comedic performances, but he's outdone himself and even topped Pineapple Express this time. Zack and Miri isn't exactly as reflective as Clerks II, but it's definitely sweeter.

If you haven't figured out what the film is about simply from the title, then I don't think I should be explaining it to you anyway. Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are lifelong best friends who have never been anything more than just that. The two have been roommates for years but haven't really progressed in life, so when they run out of money for water and electricity, they decide to shoot a porno together in order to make some quick cash. Borrowing funds from a fellow co-worker (Craig Robinson), the two scoop up other wanna-be pornstars and get down-n-dirty. But as anyone might expect, for these two friends, fucking is more than just a way to make money. Remarkably, Rogen and Banks have perfect chemistry and feel like true life-long friends captured on camera.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno is easily one of the best comedies I've seen in a long-time. Thanks to Kevin Smith, it's so easy to get into and so easy to laugh at, making it one of the lest challenging films to simply sit back and enjoy, which is a delight here in Toronto. I don't care that Elizabeth Banks never showed her tits because she's a respectable actor or that we otherwise literally got a full on Jason Mewes-on-Katie Morgan porno, because I was able to simply enjoy the enduring story that Smith put together himself. And I don't care that Seth Rogen doesn't become a hit porno producer in the end (don't worry it's not a spoiler) because the story told within this 102 minutes was thoroughly entertaining anyway.

I'm anxious to see Zack and Miri again, but not for the typical reasons. I think there is something new to gain every time and I want to see how much I missed by laughing so much. Kevin Smith's brilliance shines through yet again in Zack and Miri and Rogen and Banks, in addition to a hilarious ensemble lead by Craig Robinson, pull off wonderfully amusing performances. Zack and Miri is a comedy that will not even come close to letting anyone down. Instead, it's an instant hit that has so much more to offer than just cheap laughs.

Kevin Smith has seen the Watchmen movie and had this to say about it;

“I saw Watchmen. It’s fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I
signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete
joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off. Remember that feeling
of watching Sin City on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful
translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals?
Triple that, and you’ll come close to watching Watchmen. Even Alan Moore might
be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can’t come soon
enough.”
