Daybreakers - Trailer for Willem Dafoe vampire film

I love the concept of this - a world of vampires - and the trailer looks great. Puts me in mind of the Blade universe if Deacon Frost had won.

Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

Daybreakers - Vampires and humans working together

This has been in post production since 2007. Sounds like a great idea for a film.

In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher (Ethan Hawke) works with a covert band of vamps (Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan) on a way to save humankind.

Willem Dafoe always brings that crooked charm to his roles and it will be good to see him play another vampire after the brilliant Shadow of the Vampire.

The film also stars Sam Neill. That looks like him in the top photo below.

The photos do show that these vampires are more like the ones from Blade, organised and businesslike in their dealings.

It is not clear from the description, but the photos also suggest that Ethan Hawke is also a vampire. So all of the main characters are vampires? I think I've got that right. Instead of just finding a way to ensure there is enought blood for the vamps is Ethan trying to find a cure to the curse itself?

Daybreakers is written and directed by Australian brothers Michael and Peter Spierig. Lionsgate are releasing it on 8th January 2010 next year.

Hamlet as an action horror film?

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke talked with Movieline about her plans for the Emile Hirsch-led contemporary update of Hamlet at the recent Young Hollywood Awards.

Tone wise, Hardwicke says "It's really like a thriller. From the day Hamlet's father dies, three days later eight people are dead and a ghost is telling him to murder for revenge so we're doing it as a suspense thriller".

There'll be some additions as well - "All the action that often is off camera, we're showing it in great vivid detail. It's scary...you're going to see a lot of crazy stuff."

Asked about comparisons with another contemporary set Hamlet, Michael Almereyda's 2000 drama starring Ethan Hawke, Hardwicke says her film will be a lot "shorter and tighter".

Anyone else hear alarm bells after reading that?

What Doesn't Kill You - Trailer

Based on events from director Brian Goodman’s life, WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU, stars Mark Ruffalo (Brian) and Ethan Hawke (Paulie), as friends who grew up like brothers on the gritty streets of south Boston. They do whatever it takes to survive, living by the code of their dog-eat-dog neighborhood. Petty crimes and misdemeanors grow into more serious offenses and eventually, they fall under sway to organized crime boss Pat Kelly (played by Brian Goodman, who also wrote and directed the film).

As Brian becomes increasingly lost in a haze of drugs and ‘jobs,’ even the love he has for his wife (Amanda Peet) and his children does not seem like it will be enough to redeem him. Meanwhile, Paulie plans “one last heist” but knows it will take both of them to pull it off. How can they escape the only life they know?

I was thinking they could escape by either becoming clowns for children's parties, putting on a musical show right here, right now or by entering the Big Brother house and winning the hearts of the nation. Either that or they shoot stuff up in slow motion before both dying in a horribly ironic way.
