How about Tom Cruise as the Third Stooge?

With the recent news that Sean Penn was taking a year off from acting this means there is a place within the the Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges film. Penn was playing Larry opposite Jim Carrey as Curly (he is apparantly going to pile on the pounds for the role) and Benicio Del Toro as Moe.

Who could join Carrey and Del Toro? Names such as Paul Giamatti, Zach Galifianakis, Matt Damon, Larry David, Ben Stiller, Jack Nicholson and Simon Pegg have been mentioned.

However, another name put forward is Tom Cruise and out of all of them I think I like that idea the most - although the whole idea of the Three Stooges film leaves me feeling a little cold. He was great in Tropic Thunder when he played quite a slapstick character so he has the skills.

How do you feel about the Stooges film? Who would be the best person to fill Sean Penn's shoes?

John Carter of Mars is go

It looks as if Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars is finally moving forward. Director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E, Finding Nemo) will be making his live action feature debut.

KLS have the news that Disney will bring 400 cast and crew to Utah and the shoot will last for about seven months.

"Utah approved up to $5.5 million in tax credits for the $28 million of work done here. Production is expected to begin in November, and Disney believes the film could become its next big movie series, akin to Pirates of the Caribbean."

Stanton has said that he would be specifically adapting the first novel in series, The Princess of Mars, originally published in 1917. The story follows an American civil war hero who gets transported to Mars and becomes a hero on the planet.

Has has also said that he wants to avoud the look and feel of Star Wars or any of its derivatives, and was seeking a “more naturalistic aesthetic.”

Tom Cruise was apparantly interesting in starring in it at one point but he has since passed on the matter.

Who do you want to see play John Carter? Will Stanton be able to pull this off?

J J Abrams producing Mission Impossible 4

Spoiler TV has the news that J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Alias) is going to be the man producing Mission Impossible 4.

Tom Cruise will be back to play Ethan Hunt.

"I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on Mission Impossible 4," Abrams said. He has yet to commit to directing the project.

"Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing." He went on to say.

No word on plot and from the sound of it there is no script yet so who knows how long before we see the fourth film. I did enjoy Abrams M:I3. What would you want to see in the new film? Do you even want an M:I4?

Cruise and Travolta could possibly be Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

Tom Cruise is reportedly planning a remake of the 1969 Western Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

The actor was apparently given Paul Newman's blessing for the project ahead of his death from cancer last year.

According to The Daily Express, John Travolta, 55, has been lined up to reprise Newman's Cassidy in the remake, which will be produced through Cruise's United Artists studio.

Cruise, 46, wants to take on the role of Robert Redford's Sundance, which is said to be one of his favourite cinematic performances.

"Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom," a source said. "He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can't wait to get to work."

The original film, which follows the exploits of bank robbers Cassidy and Sundance, was directed by George Roy Hill and is said to be based loosely on fact. It won four Oscars at the 1970 Academy Awards, including those for best screenplay and cinematography.

I really cannot see this at all. The original was a true classic. Cruise and Travolta are no Redford and Newman. I think this could well be a remake too far.

Thor Casting News - He has not been cast. That is the news.

We all know Kenneth Branagh is going to direct Marvel's Thor feature. Now news is out on what the character will go through during the film as well as the look they are going for.

Corona Coming Attractions have posted the following call for a Thor lead:
“Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20′S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD.

Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant,
and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and
sever[e]ly humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature hero of our
film.”

Having Thor in his mid 20s seems a little young to me, but it is an origin tale and will supposedly mainly be set in Asgard so may well deal with his early life. It may even be a young lead and then a slightly older actor playing the same part. That's pure speculation on my part. However, it does tell us a bit more as to what will happen in the film.

Kevin McKidd (Dog Soldiers, Rome, Journeyman) has long been rumoured for the part but going from the age thing then he doesn't fit. Bit of a shame as I think he'd be great in the part.

Kind of reminds me of comedian Rich Hall's take on all Tom Cruise films (I'm not saying Tom Cruise has any involvement with this film).

He was a Thunder God. A pretty good Thunder God, until he had a crisis of confidence and can't make Thunder any more. Then he meets a good looking woman who talks him into being a better Thunder God.

The simplest solution is just get a load of actors together and see which one can lift Mjöllnir. Problem solved.

Are there any actors that spring to mind that you could see portraying Thor as described here?

Valkyrie - First 5 minutes

Here are the first 5 minutes of Valkyrie for your viewing pleasure.

n a country in the grips of evil, in a police state where every move is being watched, in a world where justice and honor have been subverted, a group of men hidden inside the highest reaches of power decide to take action. Tom Cruise stars in the suspense film, Valkyrie, based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (CRUISE) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) re-teams with Academy Award®-winning USUAL SUSPECTS screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie to bring to life the story of the men who led the operation to assassinate Hitler. The film also stars an acclaimed cast including Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Terence Stamp.

A proud military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realizing that time is running out, he decides that he must take action himself and joins the German resistance. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler’s own emergency plan – known as Operation Valkyrie – these men plot to assassinate the dictator and overthrow his Nazi government from the inside.

With everything in place, with the future of the world, the fate of millions and the lives of his wife and children hanging in the balance, von Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.

Valkyrie is produced by Bryan Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Gilbert Adler. McQuarrie co-wrote the original screenplay with Nathan Alexander who also serves as co-producer. The executive producers are Chris Lee, Ken Kamins, Daniel M. Snyder, Dwight C. Schar and Mark Shapiro. The film was shot in Germany at various locations where many of the actual events occurred, including the historic Bendlerblock. Recreating the atmosphere of urgency and paranoia inside the German resistance is a team that includes Singer’s frequent collaborators Newton Thomas Sigel (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2, X-MEN) as director of photography and editor/composer John Ottman (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2); as well as production designers Lilly Kilvert (two-time Oscar-nominee for THE LAST SAMURAI and LEGENDS OF THE FALL) and Patrick Lumb (THE OMEN) and costume designer Joanna Johnston (MUNICH, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN).

Valkyrie, 2008 - Movie Review

Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel, David Bamber
Running Time: 120 minutes
Score: 7 / 10

This review by James Meeley.

One of the tricky things about doing films based on a true moment of history, is that, oftentimes, the actual events are not nearly as interesting as the film will portray it. This will lead to a "Hollywood-ification" of history, which can hurt the believability of the film. It is only made more difficult, when you use a moment that is also very well known, such as this plot by the Germany army to kill Hitler, and in which knowing the outcome can cost you much dramatic tension. Fortunately, director Bryan Singer doesn't take many liberties with the actual history of events and produces a film that, while not perfect, is very much entertaining and somewhat moving.

First off, the look of the film is flawless. The cinematography, with its wide-angle shots and sweeping overviews of the landscape and architecture, truly captured the times in which this event took place. It really felt like 1940's Germany, under the Nazi Reich. It is, quite easily, the strongest point of the film.

The performances range a bit from adequate to very good. Tom Cruise's take on Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is more the former. It isn't bad and he certainly plays up how Stauffenberg put his love of his country above everything else, but I never really got a very good impression of why he felt this way. There was no sense of depth to the character, which one would think would be key to such an important figure of this historical moment. The fact we saw little of Stauffenberg's interaction with his family also played a part in lessening the impact of his great gamble.

Fortunately, some of the others who support Cruise help to raise the film (and his performance) from being totally lackluster. Tom Wilkinson as General Friedrich Fromm, was certainly one of the standout performances. He played the character with a true sense of duplicity and cunning guile. The way he straddles the fence on the plot to killer Hitler, is very much in keeping with how many of the high ranking Nazis seemed to navigate the political schemes within the Third Reich. Also of note, is Christian Berkel as Colonel Mertz von Quirnheim and Terence Stamp as Ludwig Beck. Both of whom turn in excellent supporting roles and have key moments of tension within the story. And while David Bamber has very few scenes in the film, he is very effective in conveying the side of Adolf Hitler that was never shown very much to the cameras of the times.

In the end, "Valkyrie" is good, but falls a bit short of the truly epic scope it wants to have. This film will become a standard for high school history teachers, when they study WWII in class, as well as being a solid entry into the war movie genre. However, there are too many little things, like almost no one speaking actual German (or even using an accent like one), or the mediocre score that lacks any memorable feeling of emotion, which keep the film out of the realm of a truly great cinema experience. Still, it is a good film, which is fairly historically accurate with the events it depicts, has some wonderful cinematography, and has an excellent cast with some standout supporting performances.

It is no "Schindler's List" or "Saving Private Ryan," but it is an entertaining look at some of the events of WWII from within the Nazi Reich, from the view of those who were involved with the atrocities that were being committed in the name of Germany. While certainly not an uplifting film (especially if you know the outcome of the plot), it is still one that is worth seeing.

Will Tropic Thunder's Les Grossman return - Tom Cruise thinks so and he should know

/film have the news that Tom Cruise has been speaking to E! The conversation got onto Tropic Thunder and Cruise's excellent turn as Les Grossman (the fact he has been nominated for a Golden Globe is pretty cool) in which he was pretty much unrecognisable as the Chief Scientologist.

Cruise told E! that “there could be more to do with that guy” before revealing that he has started to develop some short films starring the character with Thunder director/star Ben Stiller.

“I’ve talked about doing different videos with the character,” Cruise said. “I’ve started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we’ve kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven’t found the free time…yet.”

I think this is pretty cool and would love to see more of the foul mouthed producer, even if it is just short films every now and again. What about you?

The Random

M. Night Shyamalan to produce instead of direct?

Michael Rymer, director on Battlestar Galactica, is due to direct the Witchblade movie.

The Sun are saying there could be a Top Gun 2. This time Tom would be the instructor to a young hot headed female pilot.

Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) is saying he'll be playing Thulsa Doom the early years in a Conan spin off. Thulsa was the bloke James Earl Jones played in the Milius movie.

Japanese director, Ryuhei Kittamura, will be remaking his classic Zombie Kung-Fu movie, Versus, in America. The original was a piece of cinematic genius and he promises the remake will be bigger, better and gorier.
