UFO - Adaption of Gerry Anderson's classic series gets a director

I have been following this one as I can't wait to see a bit of SHADO on the big screen.

Now Variety have the news that Matthew Gratzner is to make his directorial debut on UFO, the feature adaptation of the '70s TV series.

Gratzner has worked on the visual effects for Broken Arrow, Men in Black, Alien: Resurrection, Godzilla, The X Files, Armageddon, Star Trek: Insurrection, End of Days, Pitch Black, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Forgotten, The Aviator, War of the Worlds, Aeon Flux, Superman Returns, The Fountain, The Departed, Resident Evil: Extinction, Iron Man, Hancock, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Scorsese's new film, Shutter Island.

The film was optioned from rights holder ITV Global by the Robert Evans Co., where producers Evans, Henri Kessler and Avi Haas will be joined by Gratzner's New Deal Studios to move the project forward.

A script has been written by Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek. Gratzner's studio has begun developing concept art and pre-visualizations; after they're completed, the picture will be shopped for financing.

Like the Gerry Anderson series, the film will revolve around Shado (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a secret military operation hidden beneath a Hollywood studio, whose operatives battle an alien race that has been kidnapping and killing humans for decades and using the body parts.

"The story, characters and situations Mr. Anderson created in 'UFO' are timeless and engaging," Gratzner said. "My vision is to utilize visual effects as a supportive storytelling device that draws audiences into this universe."

How do you feel about Gratzner directing UFO?

Posters for Iron Man 2, Shutter Island, The Last Airbender and Up in the Air

Here are some promo posters for Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air, M Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2.

Film1.nl were the ones who got the photos off them from the Cinema Expo International 2009 being held in Amsterdam.

These are not the finished official posters but rather a way to advertise the films at the show.

I think the Last Airbender one is my favourite.

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island - Trailer

The story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. And neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe’s radical approach to psychiatry? The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane. . .

Directed by Scorsese this is looking very good and a bit Hitchcockian methinks.

As well as the two main leads it also stars Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, and Jackie Earle Haley. Let me know what you think of the trailer.

Could this be in the running for an Oscar?

Shutter Island - Teaser poster for Martin Scorsese's next film

RopeofSilicon user “Friends of Eddie” last sent in scans from Cahiers du Cinéma’s January 2009 edition with a diary written by Argentinean filmmaker Celine Murga based on her experiences on the set of Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and today he returns with a piece of teaser art from the film scanned out of the Berliner Zeitung newspaper as part of a story about TMG/Concorde, the film’s distributor.

Since it is a scan you can slightly see some of the words bleeding through on the lighter areas but for the most part it is a top quality image, but I can’t help get the feeling it is still an early piece of artwork since the font used to write “Whatever happened to patient 67?” on the wall is just a generic font and isn’t exactly up to final art quality.

Shutter Island is currently due out on October 2 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer and Jackie Earle Haley. The official site is also live, but merely with placeholder information.
