Pirates of the Caribbean 4 before The Lone Ranger

Jerry Bruckheimer who is currently working on The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time spoke to Coming Soon about the Disney films The Lone Ranger and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Johnny Depp will be back as Captain Jack and is also meant to be playing Tonto

It looks as if Disney are focused on getting the next installement of "Pirates" sorted out.

"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," said Bruckheimer. "A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."

It makes sense for Disney to focus on a new Pirates movie. It is an almost guaranteed money maker so they will want to keep on mining that for all it is worth. I hope they take it back to the simpler kind of tale like the first film. It also looks as if Depp will be the only main star returning.

Bruckheimer shared that the original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and he said it was "funny" and a "whole new way of going" although he wouldn't share more than that.

Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game BioShock, Bruckheimer was aked if there was a chance he might return for a fourth movie. "You never know," he admitted. "He created the franchise so we'd love to have him back, but it's kind of up to him."

Bruckheimer was then asked about what was happening with The Lone Ranger as, apart from Depp, no casting for the lead character has been announced (although Matthew McConaughey had been rumoured). "Wait until they got a director and Disney says to go make the movie." This means previous rumours that Prince of Persia director Mike Newell was in talks to direct the movie are untrue. "We don't have a director yet. He's too busy on 'Prince of Persia' right now," Bruckheimer confirmed.

Matthew McConaughey as The Lone Ranger

Yesterday I mentioned that Mike Newell could be directing the big screen Lone Ranger. A while back it turned out Johnny Depp would be playing Tonto, but there was no word as to who would be playing that masked man.

Now Jeffrey Wells over on Hollywood Elsewhere had this interesting piece of news.

A guy who tends to hear reliable things read this morning's Lone Ranger item and said that "per studio desire, the leading candidate for The Lone Ranger is Matthew McConaughey. The initial choice was Christian Bale, but there's worry about his spearheading too many franchises so they're waiting to see how McG's Terminator film does. He's carrying a certain prick status at the moment due to his still reverberating rant."

I hadn't even thought of McConaughey in the role as I associate him with either romantic comedies or surfer typer naked bongo shenanigans. He is actual a pretty good actor when given a decent role. Still not sure if he is the best choice to sit in Silver's saddle.

- Keanu Reeves is in talks to star in undercover drama Cartagena for 2929 Productions says Production Weekly. The film centers on an undercover agent in Colombia who gets caught in a complex plot and must elude drug dealers and international agents if he hopes to survive.

- Barry Levinson ("Wag the Dog," "Liberty Heights") will adapt and direct an independently-financed film version of his own coming of age novel Sixty Six says The Hollywood Reporter. Set in 1966 Baltimore on the eve of significant historical events such as the counterculture movement and the war in Vietnam, 'Six' follows a staffer at a local television station and also features a diner as the center of social activity.

- Director Marcus Nispel ("Friday the 13th") is in talks to helm The Last Voyage of Demeter for Phoenix Pictures says Variety. Based on a chapter in Bram Stoker's Dracula, the story describes the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain's log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear.

- Mike Newell ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") is in talks to direct The Lone Ranger for Disney Pictures and Bruckheimer Films reports Production Weekly.

- Jim Carrey is the leading candidate to star in the offbeat dramedy The Beaver for Anonymous Content says Risky Biz Blog. Kyle Killen's Black List-lauded script centers on the relationship between a man and a beaver puppet he wears on his arm, which he talks to and treats as a companion

- David Slade ("30 Days of Night," "Hard Candy") is attached to direct the horror/psychological thriller Cold Skin for Kanzaman says Variety. Based on Albert Sanchez Pinol’s bestselling Spanish novel of the same title, the story follows a European hired to spend a year logging wind conditions on a tiny Antarctic island. The bookish young man soon discovers that he has a brutish neighbor named Gruner and the pair soon team to slaughter the humanoid killer amphibians that overrun the island each night. Gruner keeps a humanoid female looking one as a pet and after fornicating with it repeatedly, the young man tries to befriend the creatures. Things soon turn into a dark orgy of murder and beastiality that when his replacement arrives, the young man has become as feral as Gruner was before him.

Transformers 3 will roll out in 2011.

Paramount has announced an official 1st July, 2011 release date for Michael Bay's Transformers 3. However, the studio is not confirming that Bay will be back.

2011 will also have lots of other cool films. Spider-Man 4 is due for 6th May, Thor is due 20th May, Kung Fu Panda 2 is scheduled for 3rd June, Cars 2 is scheduled for 24th June, the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II is due in July, and Marvel's The First Avenger: Captain America is scheduled for July 22nd.

We might also see Disney add Pirates of the Caribbean 4, or The Lone Ranger.

Depp is going all Western - The Lone Ranger shooting soon and Caliber comic book continues

The Midland Reporter-Telegram out of Midland Texas reported on 2-8-09 that the Texas State Railroad's new owner, the American Heritage Railway, said part of the Johnny Depp movie The Lone Ranger will be filmed on the railway in the coming months.

It's still not clear who will be playing the Lone Ranger opposite Depp's Tonto.

It was also recently announced at the New York Comic Con that Sam Sarkar’s Caliber, which along with Hercules was one of Radical Publishing’s debut books, will continue. Sarkar described the series as “King Arthur as a Western.” There is also a movie in the works, with Johnny Depp’s company producing and John Woo slated to direct.

Who was the masked man? Well it could be George Clooney as the Lone Ranger.

On Wednesday, Disney announced that Johnny Depp had been cast in Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming reboot of The Lone Ranger. This was revealed at a massive presentation that Disney held all day in Hollywood, and the finale that featured a live marching band was for The Lone Ranger so it sounds like it is being treated as kind of a big deal. But who is going to be playing the masked ranger? Merrick on AICN has a source who claims that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role.

George Clooney as the Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp as Tonto. That's going to be a big movie. Still no news on who will direct it. Johnny Depp was brilliant in Dead Man and I can't think of any other Western he has been in.

UPDATED: Johnny Depp - Disney's Favourite. The Lone Ranger, Alice In Wonderland, Pirates 4

I just spent the last six and a half hours in the Kodak Theater in Hollywood watching Disney’s big keynote event. So the next few stories will be about the big announcements that came out of the presentation.

Johnny Depp has been cast in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer produced adaptation of the classic old-time radio and early television show The Lone Ranger created by George W. Trendle. The series followed a masked Texas Ranger in the Old West who rights injustices with the aid of his native American assistant, Tonto. He gallops along on his white horse Silver. The character’s signature quote is “Hi-yo, Silver, away!” Depp will play Tonto. Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have been writing the script. No start or release dates have been announced.

Depp must have signed a multi-picture deal with the studio, because it was also announced that the actor would play The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s 3D part live-action, part computer animated adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Principal photography is set to begin in November, with a March 5th 2010 release date previously announced. Concept art from the film was shown, showing the classic Alice in Wonderland scenes done in Tim Burton style, complete with curved and slanted corners. Everything is really stylized. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb have huge heads, and are shaped like upward missiles. None of the characters look like a dramatic departure from the traditional designs.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Richard W. “Dick” Cook announced “How about another pirates movie!?” signaling that Depp was now signed for Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

UPDATE: According to IESB and Variety, Depp will be playing Tonto, not The Lone Ranger. Depp is part Cherokee.
