Star Wars Live-Action TV Series Casting Underway

A live-action TV series set in the “Star Wars” cosmos has been an elusive, tantalizing prospect for years. News of the potential production first surfaced in 2005 while George Lucas was promoting “Revenge of the Sith.” Work on the “Clones Wars” animated feature film and Cartoon Network series, though, took creative precedence. In late 2007, Lucas revealed that he and his team were about to begin writing scripts for the live-action show. Now MTV News has learned that casting for the series is currently underway. What characters would you like to see in the TV show? Who would you cast in it? What planets, aliens and space craft do you want to see and what bits of the Star Wars myth would you like to watch unfold on the small screen?During the junket for the Nicolas Cage thriller “Knowing,” star Rose Byrne let slip that Team Lucas is casting a wide net for actors to join the show. “A lot of my friends have been auditioning for it,” she said.
According to Lucas, the show will focus on minor characters from the saga and be set in the time period between “Revenge of the Sith” (Episode III) and the original “Star Wars” (Episode IV). The action will follow the Rebel Alliance as it slowly gains strength against the Empire. There will be Stormtroopers, but no Jedi or Darth Vader will appear on screen. As he did with the “Clone Wars” series, Lucas will write and shoot an entire year’s worth of episodes before looking for a cable channel on which to air the series.
Thus, with casting just now moving forward, it looks to be quite some time before fans will be able to catch some live-action “Star Wars” on the small screen.
Bryne couldn’t have been more pleased about her time working with Lucas on 2002’s “Attack of the Clones.” “My experience was wonderful,” she said. “George is a great guy. I was just there for a week, standing behind Natalie [Portman] looking very demure and supportive. 95% of the fan mail I get is from ‘Star Wars’ and I’ve never seen them.”
As much as she enjoyed the “Star Wars” experience, Byrne, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work on FX’s “Damages,” will not be auditioning for the live-action series. “I’m on a show,” she said. “I don’t know if I look that good in space.”

The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag - Alex Proyas is still talking about it

For whatever reason it has cropped up again even though the situation is pretty much the same (Proyas is talking about it but it won't be made just yet) but it does go into some of the inspiraction behind Proyas' decision to make the brilliant Dark City. Hoag does seem to be a slightly different kettle of fish though.
Alex Proyas spoke to SCI FI Wire about writing his own film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1942 SF novella, The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag.
"It's one of these stories that's come from my childhood, in that I read it when I was quite young," Proyas (I, Robot) said in a recent interview while promoting the March 20 release of Knowing. "That was a fairly formative story for me. It really did inspire Dark City in some ways. It's one of those pieces that you read when you're young, and I'd not really read it for maybe 20 years. Going back to it, I was actually quite surprised at how much stuff had filtered into my other work from the story."
The story centers on Jonathan Hoag, a man who one night realizes that he doesn't know what he actually does during the day and is confounded by the reddish residue he sees under his fingernails each night. Hoag hires a husband-and-wife private investigator team, Ted and Cynthia Randall, to follow him, and what the Randalls discover is horrifying—and involves mirrors, dark dreams, a missing 13th floor and some folks who call themselves Sons of the Bird.
"There's just something incredibly creepy about it," Proyas said. "Look, I think the whole concept in the story is this parallel universe that exists on the other side of a mirror. I think that's really quite fascinating. I know there have been quite a few stories done about that and a lot of films done with that concept, but it's something that I'm really excited to explore, just this universe that exists in the looking glass."
Jonathan Hoag is one of three projects that could turn out to be Proyas' follow-up to Knowing (Nicholas Cage). The other two are Dracula: Year Zero, based on an original screenplay, and The Tripods, a possible trilogy adapted from John Christopher's SF youth novels. Proyas doubts that Jonathan Hoag will get done first.
"I'm at the early stages of doing the screenplay, so who knows what direction it's going to take?" he said. "But it is something I'm excited about. I am actually doing the screenplay myself at this stage. Usually I start the ball rolling and often bring in collaborators. So I'd be surprised if it was just me right through to the end. But you never know. It really depends on how the draft goes."
Now I've not read the book in question, but it does sound like my cup of tea. Have any of you read it? Apart from the main characters opening amnesia, how similar it is to Dark City? Any more Dark City fans out there?

Knowing - International Trailer for Nic Cage's latest
Fast forward 50 years to the present: A new generation of students examines the contents of the time capsule and the girl’s cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Myles. But it is Caleb’s father, professor Ted Myles (Nicolas Cage), who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As Ted further unravels the document’s secrets, he realizes it foretells three additional events—the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son. When Ted’s attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.
This gripping supernatural thriller charts one man’s faltering steps towards belief in the ultimate order of the universe even as he finds himself surrounded by mounting chaos. With the reluctant help of Diana Whelan (Rose Byrne) and Abby, the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased author of the cryptic prophecies, Ted’s increasingly desperate efforts take him on a heart-pounding race against time until he finds himself facing the ultimate disaster—and the ultimate sacrifice.

Knowing - Clip of Nicholas Cage looking anxious in new film
In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one mysterious girl fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead.
Fifty years later, a new generation of students examines the capsule's contents and the girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Koestler. But it is Caleb's father, professor John Koestler (Nicolas Cage), who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As John further unravels the document's chilling secrets, he realizes the document foretells three additional events-the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve John and his son. When John's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place.
With the reluctant help of Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne) and Abby Wayland, the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased author of the prophecies, John's increasingly desperate efforts take him on a heart-pounding race against time until he finds himself facing the ultimate disaster-and the ultimate sacrifice.pix97670

Nicholas Cage to be Sorcerer to Jay Baruchel's Sorcerer's Apprentice. Could it be Magic? Computer says no!

Can you see where this is going? Just imagine Cage as the Sorcerer. He'll be doing all his Elvis style hand and arm waving as he casts a spell, he'll be as giddy as a school girl picking out just the right wig to wear as the powerful magic user (will it be long or short for this one - I think long) and he will unleash all the ticks and grimaces he can muster Mister. It's also not clear if Cage is going to be playing a modern day sorcerer or an old school medieval one who travels through time to modern day New York. If he is medieval then you can imagine the hilarious consequences his all powerful Sorcery will cause.
Jay Baruchel (Fanboys, Tropic Thunder) is in talks to play the lead role in Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. He was cool in Tropic Thunder and looked as if he was going to break out into the big leagues. However, being involved in this one may not be the best decision.
Mind you it may actually not be that bad. As long as they get a good script it just might work. Let's see what I can dig up...who is writing it...oh!
The film was scripted by Superman IV: The Quest for Peace screenwriters Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, with a rewrite by Bedtime Stories scribe Matt Lopez.
It does not bode well.
Variety have more on the story. How will Cage chew up the scenes in this one? Could it be good?
Knowing - Poster for Nicholas Cage Apocalypse movie

A teacher (Cage) opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold.
Knowing is directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City, Garage Days, and I, Robot)
What do you think of the poster? Do you think this will be a decent Nick Cage movie or will it continue is ever deepening trend of bad films?

UPDATED: Knowing - Nicholas Cage and the evil of Numbers
A teacher (Cage) opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son'sI'm still working on my theory that the length of Cage's hair correlates with how bad the movie is going to be, but still a few kinks in it. For this movie he has short hair again which could be good or bad. Still the trailer is pretty good and there is a bit at the 30 second mark which made me go "What the...." It's directed by Alex Proyas who did The Crow, Dark City and I, Robot. Interestingly IMDB shows him as being the director for the Silver Surfer movie and writer for a movie version of John Christopher's The Tripods (I remember the really slow TV series as a kid). Knowing is out in March, 2009.
