Bazooka Joe....Oh no!

Be very, very quiet.....do you hear it....shh.....there it was again.....What sound?

Why the sound of the bottom of a barrel being scraped by the Studios.

Mark Hammer has signed on to pen Bazooka Joe, a feature film adaptation of the bubble gum comic strip for Tornante Co. says The Hollywood Reporter.

That's right. The small comic strip that was wrapped around a piece of gum is going to be a film.

Joe, who wears an eye patch for reasons never explained, has child-friendly misadventures, sometime joined by various friends like Pesty, Mort, Toughie, Hungry Herman, love interest Jane and a dog named Walkie Talkie.

Oooh I wonder if it will have the reason why Joe wears an eyepatch? No doubt it will get turned into some kid friendly action film where the day is saved by chewing some gum and sticking it on the Rocketeer's rocket pack.

Mind you it would be cool if it turned out Joe was a young Snake Plissken!

Hammer, who this weekend is attending the graduation ceremony at Orange
County’s Chapman University, where he studied film, wrote a spec titled “Sonny
Takes to Peru,” which made the studio rounds but ultimately did not
sell.

That spec, however, turned into a strong writing sample that got
him into meetings as well as representation at management outfit the Safran Co.
Execs at Tornante, seeking to fill their open writing assignment, liked the spec
and brought in Hammer, who gave them his winning take.

Read that again. He wrote a script that was good enough to get him into the studio system, but as it was original it got binned and he is lucky enough to write the adventures of a kid with an eyepatch! Sonny Takes Peru is a cool name.

For God's sake! There are loads of excellent scripts out there sitting gathering dust as the studios don't think the audience can take an original idea.

Somebody get me the President on the phone......it's ringing.......Hello....Barack? Yeah, it's Phil. Just wondering...oh we're all fine....how are you?.... Nice, you liked Star Trek?.....Yep so did I....you heard about Bazooka Joe being a film.....you have?.....Can you sort it out? ..... No.....Damn....wait are you chewing gum?....You are!....What?...you're sending some people over?....Uh, uh... negative, negative. We had a reactor leak here now. Give us a few minutes to lock it down. Large leak, very dangerous....

Spike Lee talks about Obama and Sundance

Jill Martin had a minute to speak with Spike Lee, at last night's Knicks vs. Rockets game.

Not only does he speak about his party he hosted for the inauguration party for President Barack Obama, but also his new movie, Passing Strange, that he promoted at Sundance. Apparantly it was his first time at the Sundance Film Festival.

Thanks to Adriana for passing me the link.

Obama vs Vader - Who will win?

I spotted this photo over on Boing Boing and thought it was cool. Then there is the full set of photos for the Obama action figure, including one where he is all ready for ninja action with a couple of Katanas.

Zombie swarm or Presidential Inauguration

Some amazing satellite images from GeoEye show just how many people attended Barack Obama's inauguration yesterday.

Is it just me though or would that be what a zombie apocalypse would look like from space? If you've read World War Z you'll know the chapter I'm getting at.

Great photos and cheers to Del for pointing them out.

Will Smith to play Barack Obama

Movieweb spoke to Will Smith and Rosario Dawson about their work on Seven Pounds. However, during the conversation Dawson let slip that Smith may be playing Obama at some point.

Smith said that he was definitely considering playing the president elect sometime in the future, and then remarked that his ears made him a lock for the role. It's a joke he has shared many times. He explained that a Barack Obama biopic excited him because the film, "Already has one heck of an ending!" For anyone that is expecting to see this within the next couple of years might have to hold their breath, though. If Mr. Smith has it his way, he'd want to wait eight years before producing and starring in a film about America's first black president. He also commented that he'd want to wait until at least six months after Obama was out of office before releasing it, which he felt should have been done with Oliver Stone's W.

Will Smith as Obama? Good thing or bad thing?

Obama-Man - He came from Krypton to save us apparantly

CBR have news on this one - Favored U.S. Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama continued his historical campaign last night at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in New York City, where he once again courted the coveted “geek vote” by including in his speech the revelation that he was born on Krypton and sent by his father, Jor-El, to “save the planet Earth,” a clear reference to Superman.

The Superman bit is near 5:20
The Democratic Senator from Illinois also referenced geek paragon Mad Magazine, remarking, “It’s been said that I share the politics of Alfred E. Smith and the ears of Alfred E. Neuman.” Additionally, Obama has been endorsed by indie comics mainstay The Savage Dragon by Erik Larsen as well as Comics Industry for...Obama!, an organized group of comics professionals. Further, the Senator was reported to have identified "Star Trek" actor Leonard "Mr. Spock" Nimoy at a campaign event and acknowledged him with the Vulcan gesture of respect.

What do you think of that?

Barack Says Chill - please excuse the swearing but it made me chuckle

I know it is not movie related (well all the speeches are scripted and they no doubt have stage directions) but this made me laugh. Apologies for the swearing on it.
