John Carter is Gambit? What the...!?

I mentioned that the John Carter of Mars film was starting filming soon and now it looks as if the main roles have been cast. To be honest I am a little surprised.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins will star in the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) is directing for Disney.

"Carter" centers on a civil war who veteran finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where his involvement with warring races of the dying planet force him to rediscover his humanity.

Kitsch (Gambit) will play the title character, Carter, while Collins will play Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars. Collins worked with Kitsch in Wolverine, playing Hugh Jackman's character's love interest Kayla Silverfox. She also co-stars in the HBO vampire drama "True Blood."

Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris, who produced "WALL-E," and Colin Wilson are producing "Carter," which is eyeing a start in early 2010.

The role of Carter was considered one of "the" gets for a young actor, and Disney has spent months meeting and testing a wide swath of names from Jon Hamm to Josh Duhamel during its search.

This casting seems a little off. I always pictured Carter as being physically older.

How do you feel about the casting choice?

Deadpool movie is good to go

Fantastic news about fans of the Merc with a Mouth - that includes me (the image above is via Geek Tyrant).

Twentieth Century Fox has begun development on Deadpool, an "X-Men" spinoff that will be crafted as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The character is one of the most popular in Marvel Comics' X-Men universe. Deadpool is Wade Wilson, a mercenary who, dying of cancer, submits himself to the Weapon X genetic alteration experiment and emerges as an indestructible semi-sane anti-hero.

Reynolds seemed destined to play the character. In one reference in the Marvel Comics, Deadpool is described as a mix between "a Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds."

In one of the "Easter egg" endings of "Wolverine," Deadpool is seen rising from the rubble and whispering "Shhh" to audiences. The Deadpool we saw in the film is not quite like the one we saw at the end of the Wolvie film.

The film will be produced by Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel.

According to a source close to Fox, the Deadpool spin-off film “a complete exploration of this unique character."

Fox is also in the formative stages of a "Wolverine" sequel that will encompass the samurai storyline that was hinted at as Wolverine sat in a bar in Japan as the film concluded.

Separately, Fox is developing Magneto, a film about the X-Men villain with a script by Shelton Turner, and X-Men: First Class, which Josh Schwartz is penning.

Great news about the Deadpool film (Check out my review of the Wolverine movie). I really hope they keep it close to the comic book character. I want to see him break the fourth wall and know he is just a comic book movie character. What do you want to see in a Deadpool film?

Charles Barkley talks Wolverine during NBA Playoffs

During last nights NBA Playoffs the network broadcasting the game switched over to a discussion between commentators Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley. However, they were not talking about the game. Nope, they were talking about who was better, Wolverine or Gambit. There could be only one outcome...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Early review. Lots of spoilers.

We Are Movie Geeks have this early review of the Wolverine film. It has loads of spoilers so it is in invisotext. Highlight it with your mouse if you want to know what happens in the film. It pretty much has the whole plot here.
OK, so I’m not a movie reviewer, so forgive me if this is not as concise as a professional review might be. Having said that, I also don’t know how much of the plot and “ohhhh, holy shit!!!” moments you want to know, possibly spoiling it. But feel free to edit and take out anything you don’t want to have spoiled.

The movie itself looks amazing. Lots of cool sets and special effects, it’s edited very well, the pacing is perfect and the running time is right on. It actually leaves you wanting more, and really, isn’t that the “nirvana” that most action movies hope to arrive at for the audience?

The back story of Logan (aka Wolverine) is set up pretty good. It’s not too much and it explains Logan’s motivation from childhood. As a young boy, something terrible happens, his “mutant” power is revealed, and he and his brother must flee.

Fast forward to 1970-something Viet Nam. Logan and his brother Victor (aka Sabretooth) are soldiers and Victor has become an irrational bully who has no problem killing anyone that gets in his way. This leads to both of them being locked up in the brig for a very long time. Enter a higher up military officer (Stryker) who offers to get them out of there if they agree to join his special ops team. This elite team is made up of other mutants, all with various different, really cool “powers.” Mission after mission goes by, with Victor really taking a liking to the violence and developing an appetite for killing. Logan, on the other hand, draws the line at being ordered to kill innocent people and decides to walk away. Off he goes to live a quiet life in the Canadian wilderness with his girlfriend/wife/whoever

Cut to various former members of the special ops team being killed. No reason is apparent. The former leader of the group (Stryker) finds Logan in his now lumberjack career and tells him about this. Logan says thanks for the warning but I can take care of myself. As he returns to his work, he senses something is not right and then notices bloody claw marks on a tree. He runs to find his girlfriend/wife/whoever lying dead with gashes across her throat. Victor has killed her. Now its personal and Logan flies into a rage. He finds Victor and a battle ensues. But they basically have the same “powers” so it’s impossible for one to beat the other. Victor flees and Logan agrees to let Stryker help him become more powerful, and therefore able to go kill Victor. Cut to the “lab” scene from the trailer, new steel blades ready to do some serious damage. I don’t want to give it away, but one of my favorite parts of the movie is when we find out where the name “Wolverine” comes from… oooh I just got goosebumps thinking about it… haha. HUGE SPOILER: “the crazy mad scientist, Stryker, is kidnapping them all (mutants) and keeping them prisoners because he is takin their DNA to make a Super Mutant…one guy with ALL the powers…IT’S RYAN REYNOLD’S CHARACTER, Wade Wilson / Deadpool….its so creepy when you see him at the end!!”

This is where I will just say that the movie gets more awesome than it already is. The fight sequences are great, the story takes twists and turns, and the “holy shit!” moments make you want to cheer. I will see this movie again on opening weekend with a full audience of fans. It is THAT kind of movie. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

And one more thing…there are things after the credits..so stick around, for those of you who jump up right at the fade out.
UPDATE:

I got another email from my source and he wants to add more stuff to this so that everyone knows he really has seen the movie..this DOES INCLUDE SPOILERS!

“for anyone doubting my review:(highlight the text below to read:)
Deadpool/Wade is part of the elite team that they, Logan and Victor, joined and he’s kind of the comic relief. When they’re traveling on missions together, he never shuts up and everyone is always telling him to SHUT UP…a real know-it-all. He gets into it with Wolverine and Sabretooth and they almost come to blows and he takes out his weapon ,a big silver sword, saber. Logan, who’s not yet called Woverine, diffuses the situation and calms everyone down-Victor and Wade. (This is so we establish what Wade’s weapon is for later on in the movie). Beak, (Dominic Monaghan) who uses electricity, is the first one TO DIE. Victor kills him
At the end of the movie, when Wolverine finds out that Stryker and the scientists have been taking out the DNA from the mutants, who they all now have in cages, he goes to free them all. The other member of the team, “Wraith” (played by Will.I.Am) keeps telling him the mutants are being held captive in the lab which is on the island - but Wraith doesn’t know where this Island is…The only mutant to know is the one person who’s ever escaped - which is Gambit. Gambit then agrees to take Wolverine there and as they’re flying in Gambit’s plane….the wide shot reveals!!!!!!!!!!!!

ITS THE FAMED THREE-MILE ISLAND….THE NUCLEAR REACTORS AND ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolverine is also now indestructable because of all the modifications that Stryker made on him back when Stryker convinced Wolverine to go after Sabretooth - all because S.T. killed Logan’s girlfriend.
When Wolverine shows up and starts kickin ass…the SuperMutant is not ready yet, but Stryker has no choice, he has to release him….and that’s when you figure out its Ryan Reynold’s character…Wade/Deadpool/SuperMutant. ITS ALL CRAZY…He has no hair, bald, his eyes are red and sunken in so he can shoot the fire outta his eyes….HE HAS EVERY MUTANT POWER…..AND….HIS MOUTH IS SEWN SHUT!!! Wolverine says, “Well Wade, looks like somebody finally shut you up” This is the reference back to the beginning when all the other mutants would tell Wade to shut up.
SO when Wolverine goes after him, SuperMutant/Deadpool/Wade’s trusty sword automatically comes outta his fist much like Wolverine’s blade. Now its a fight…..Deadpool has ALL the powers in this epic battle…he can disappear like The Wraith, he can shoot fire outta his eyes - pretty much indestructable. Wolverine is basically getting his ass kicked.
SO then, they’ve gone from inside the lab …and moved the fight to on top of the reactor.Deadpool is destroying everything…reactors, the everything is going down cuz he’s shooting everything with his eyes. Then, Deadpool punches him so hard Wolverine goes over the side of the reactor and in a SPLIT second, a hand reaches down to save him….AND ITS SABRETOOTH….TO SAVE THE DAY……AND YELLS, “NOBODY KILLS YOU BUT ME, BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
(Sabretooth has been there the whole time, but wasn’t fighting - he was just rounding up all the mutants for Stryker). After he pulls him up to the roof, Sabretooth says to Wolverine “Back-to-back” and they position themselves back to back so they can have eyes on both sides. Since they’re both attacking Deadpool, Wolverine, with one swipe, cuts Deadpool’s head clean off. Sabretooth then turns and says, “You know this doesn’t mean we’re still not enemies” and takes off…
Then, Wolverine, has to go after Stryker and free the other mutants. But unbeknownst to Wolverine, Stryker has a magic bullet and as he’s loading the gun with it, the other scientists in the lab say, “you can’t kill Wolverine with that”. Stryker then says “Yeah I know, but if I shoot him in the head, it will erase his memory.” (Remember, Wolverine never knew where he came from).
So as Wolverine is helping to free the mutants, Stryker goes up to him and shoots him in the head….Wolverine drops to the floor as if dead. Stryker then takes off. Cut back to WOlverine fluttering his eyes open…HE”S NOT DEAD…… The military, the shitstorm is coming after what they saw what was happening at Three-Mile-Island. Gambit runs over to tell Wolverine “WE GOTTA GO!!!” and Wolverine looks up and says, “Who are you?!?!?! Wher the hell am I?!?!??!” Gambit says “I’m a friend..you gotta trust me….We have to get outta here”
CUT TO:
A Dark forest…the escaped mutants are running for their lives…..and they all stop and you see the back of abald head…and you hear Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) voice only, saying “You’re all safe…come with me”
FADE TO BLACK!!!”

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Final Trailer and Gambit finally has the correct eye colour!

Some interesting things shown here. More Logan, more Gambit (with the right eye colour), Sabretooth (liev Schreiber) chasing down a young Cyclops and the young mutants in the cells are wearing uniforms that remind me of the Hellions from the comic. It also shows Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) going sword crazy and what could be Deadpool again near the end with a kind of Cyclops eye beam effect going on - the character in question is bald and has some weird kind of scarring or marking that the Deadpool toy showed a while back. Not sure though as Deadpool never had the eye beam malarky and POV (Pool O Vision) from the comic is just his hallucination given name.

Could it me Weapon XI that has been mentioned? I don't know. What do you make of it?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Screen shots from the trailer - Deadpool, The Blob and Storm

You've seen the trailer but couldn't quite see who was who and what was what. Well fear no more.
Empire Magazine have a shot for shot breakdown of the recent X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer. They have 42 pics in all and here are just a few of them.
Above and below: It's Gambit, aka, Remy LeBeau, played by Taylor Kitsch. A firm fan favourite, Cajun card sharp and thief Gambit can charge objects with kinetic energy so that the energy is released explosively on contact. Interestingly here, throwing a card within six feet of Wolverine pushes him back and through a wall, so presumably we're talking about a sort of field of kinetic force around the object. Note the vaguely '70s look, by the by: this is supposed to be set 20 (or so) years before the X-movies, which are set only in the "near future".
There also appear to be some shots of other mutants as kids - Cyclops, Banshee, Emma Frost to name a few.Above: This looks to us like a baby Storm, aka Ororo Munroe, the daughter of a Kenyan princess and an African-American photographer, orphaned in an earthquake in Egypt and left to survive through pick-pocketing. This doesn't look like she's at Stryker's facility, so she may be a random encounter out in the world (it is a small world, after all).

Above: This is Frederick J. Dukes, aka The Blob. He's not a looker, but he has a near-indestructible layer of fat that can survive bullet and even missile impacts, and is virtually immovable as long as he's in contact with the ground.

Above: This'd be Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds, the clear fan favourite for the role), a skilled fighter who's excellent with blades, guns, assassination techniques and unarmed combat. He has a Wolverine-alike healing factor (although it's not entirely clear that he has that at the time this story starts, since in the comics it's derived from Wolverine's own ability) and in the comics ends up scarred and with a mask. He's a sarky bastard much beloved by the fanboys, and we do know that he'll end up fighting Logan late in the movie.
Check out the rest of the photos over on Empire - lots of Sabretooth, young Wolvie, Agent Zero, John Wraith, Silver Fox and many more. Are you excited about seeing this film or will it be a honking big mutant massacre of a movie?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer - Bootleg copy

Watch it while you can (even has a couple of people walk in front of the sneaky camera). I spotted Deadpool, Sabretooth, The Blob, Gambit and what could be Emma Frost.

Here's another copy of it in case the above goes

Give me your thoughts on that - cheesetastic or amazing?

Taylor Kitsch as Gambit in the new Wolverine Film

Holy Camp as Christmas? Remy LeBeau, Gambit, the super X-Men thief, the weird black eyed Cajun who all the women fall for is going to look like this in the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The actors name is Taylor Kitsch and his surname does seem to suit his look in the image!

Remy LeBeau aka Gambit is a Louisiana born X-Men mutant that has the ability to manipulate kinetic energy. He is known for his love and manipulation of playing cards and is incredibly skilled in card throwing and hand-to-hand combat. Gambit is the X-Men's self-described ladies man and has held a relationship with Rogue over the years.

What do you think of Taylor as Gambit? Does this bode well for the Wolverine film?

Wolverine - Trailer Description

This from Slash Film

"In an entirely unprecedented move, Hugh Jackman burst onto the scene at Comic Con after having flown straight from Australia, with filming on Wolverine literally finishing up just this past week. He announced that he just had to reveal to the real fans (without whom he claims he “wouldn’t have a career”) what the movie would be like, offering up the first ever seen trailer/footage.

Naturally, this caused an onslaught of applause from audience members.

The trailer kicks off with Wolverine and Sabertooth in a prison cell. They get taken outside, strapped to posts, and shot to hell by a firing squad. “What did that feel like?” a man asks. Wolverine responds: “It tickled.”

Cut to a shot of Wolverine strutting cheesily to the camera as a truck explodes behind him. Marvel logo fades onscreen.

Then Major William Stryker announces himself to both Sabertooth and Wolverine, discussing the prospect of putting a special team together. Interspersed between this are shots of them running through the woods with full-fledged animal ferocity, being surrounded by a group of soldiers in a circle while amping up to kick some ass, and then the clincher, a shot of Deadpool posing for the camera with his two samurai swords.

Wolverine tells Sabertooth that this wasn’t the program he signed up for. We see him being hooked into place inside the adamantium-injecting machine and thrashing about in the water. He bursts out of it in a blaze of anger and roars at the camera, his claws bursting out of his hands while he does it. Bodies drop as Wolverine slashes in every direction.

A handful of cards are tossed toward the screen, and the camera pans to reveal none other than Gambit holding his electrically-enhanced staff.

More quick shots: a child Wolverine (?) screams with his claws burst out of his hands, Sabertooth lunges across the ground like an animal and attacks Wolverine in what looks like a small snippet of a much larger battle, Wolverine gets clobbered in a boxing ring by the massive Blob, Wolverine goes one-on-one with Gambit, and a mysterious girl begins to have electricity sparkle all throughout her body.

Before you can even begin to recognize all the quick shots of your favorite comic book characters, a final set of clips shows off a very cool-looking set piece with Wolverine facing off on his motorcycle against a truck, and eventually climaxes with him launching thirty feet in the air onto a helicopter.

The title shoots on screen: X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Finishing off the footage, Wolverine looks at Saberooth and quips, “I’m gonna cut your goddamn head off; see if that works.”

Out of the clips shown, there appears to be a lot going for and against this movie. Towards the beginning of the footage, the cheese factor was through the roof, feeling more on par with Ratner’s X-Men than Singer’s. Later on though, the mere presence of characters like Gambit and Deadpool immediately picked up the excitement factor several notches. What we got to see from the action sequences only furthered this excitement, confirming that even if the film doesn’t offer much in terms of emotional/dramatic tension or strong storytelling, it will at least amount to a whole lot of action-packed fun."
