District 9 - Interviews with Neill Blomkamp, Peter Jackson and Sharlto Copley

The first screening of District 9 was at the San Diego Comic Con (honestly, you would think that there have been no other sources of film news over the past few days!)

After the screening the Neill Blomkamp (director), Sharlto Copley (star) and Peter Jackson (producer) chatted about the film.

The film is on general release from 14th August.

King Kong Prequel in the works

Spirit Pictures is looking to breathe new life into King Kong and a project initially developed by effects legend Ray Harryhausen according to Variety.

Producers at the shingle have picked up the rights to the book "Kong: King of Skull Island," a prequel to the well-known tale of the big ape.

Penned by Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland, book focuses on the backstory of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there. It introduces other giant gorillas and dinosaurs only hinted at in the previous films.

The book was published at the same time Peter Jackson was producing his remake of "King Kong."

Rights to make the movie were brokered with the Merian C. Cooper family, who own the Kong property. Cooper co-directed the original "Kong," released in 1933.

"We're very concerned with honoring Merian C. Cooper's legacy in Hollywood. We want to make sure that whatever we deliver will honor his memory," said Spirit's Steve Iles, who worked on videogames for the "Star Wars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchises through his Pocket Studios game company.

The plan is to produce the film using motion-capture technology such as Robert Zemeckis used to make "The Polar Express," "Beowulf" and the upcoming "A Christmas Carol." Spirit's own facility would produce the CG work.

World War Z may be looking for a new director

First there were delays then there was the news that J Michael Straczynski's script was being rewritten by script hot shot Matthew Michael Carnahan.

Now a rumour that came from the San Diego Comic Con that Paramount Pictures is currently looking for a new director.

Currently attached is Marc Forster who directed Quantum of Solace. To me Quantum was a huge disappointment after the excellent Casino Royale. The action scenes in Quantum just didn't work. Therefore, the news that Forster may not be doing World War Z is actually pretty cool to me. I just really want to see Max Brooks excellent book on the big screen - The Battle of Yonkers, lobos, the astronauts on the space station watching the swarms of the undead, underwater zombies and more.

This is a rumour at the moment, but who would be a good director for this adaption? Zack Snyder, Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, Lloyd Kaufman? Who could it be?

District 9 - New photo of a big flamethrower / gun thing

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.

The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

The Hobbit - Who will be Bilbo? Dr Who, Harry Potter or Mr Tumnus?

Rumour has it that the name of the lead star in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit will be announced next week at Comic-Con International.

Names recently mentioned in the running are David Tennant (Dr Who), Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and James McAvoy (Wanted, The Last King of Scotland). Sadly Ian Holm who played Bilbo in The Lord of The Rings is not in the running.

I don't really see any of the trio being Bilbo, they're all a little skinny and heading down the Elijah Wood as Frodo look.

However, if I had to pick I would like to see Tennant. To go from the Doctor to The Hobbit would be amazing.

This also seems like it could be the most likely if you look at what is happening at this years Comic Con.

David Tennant is making his very first trip to the San Diego expo to promote Doctor Who, a television series that he will soon be leaving behind. Peter Jackson, the producer of the two-film "Hobbit" series due out in 2011 is also meant to be appearing at the Comic Con. Coincedence?

District 9 - Amazing new trailer

Here is the new trailer for Neill Blomkamp's District 9. This is the film with aliens coming to Earth and being put in camps in South Africa. Peter Jackson has produced it.

Quite frankly it looks stunning. Very documentary in style, but the effects look incredible - you see more of the aliens, more spacecraft, mech armour, baby aliens (check out the PSA to see how the aliens reproduce) and more. The trailer also gives you a better look at the tale. What are the humans at MNU doing with the aliens? What is happening to the MNU guy when he gets sprayed by some alien chemical?

How good does it look? It is due out on 15th August.

District 9 - New Poster

While we wait for the new trailer for Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi film which is supposedly showing this Friday before Bruno, here is the latest poster.

I'm not sure if Bruno is the best film for it to be showing with, but it should reach a lot of people.

It is produced by Peter Jackson and is looking very good indeed.

You've got to wait until the 14th August before the film is released.

In the meantime here is the first trailer again.

District 9 - For Humans only

It looks like the ad campaign for Neill Blomkamp's excellent looking aliens among us film, District 9, is getting the big push.
Produced by Peter Jackson these new posters and ads are beginning to crop up in various places. I wonder if anyone who knows nothing of the film will buy into what they are saying?
Have you seen any more posters for the film?

Avatar - Concept art from James Cameron's Sci-Fi wonder

The good folks over at Marketsaw were given permission by Fox to publish these lovely pieces of concept art from James Cameron's highly anticipated film, Avatar.

The images are from a book called The Art of Avatar which has a forward by Peter Jackson.

/Film describe the above picture as "This one appears to show action from a set piece rather near the end of proceedings. Fleeing in the foreground is another one of the futuristic flying machines (most likely the Dragon Gunship, I think) and behind it is one of the native beasts of Pandora. This one, I think, is a Bansheeray."

The picture below shows more of the mech suit that had been previously posted. That could be Sam Worthington's character in the suit.
This artwork is lovely and to think that we will be seeing it all in 3D is mind blowing. It does look like Cameron may really be changing the face of cinema as we know it.

What do you think of the concept art? Excited?
