Captain Nemo's adventures face another rewrite

The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake is heading through stormy waters at the moment. After the middling response to Terminator Salvation this new McG may not go as smoothly as planned. It has already had a rewrite - Justin Marks (Masters of the Universe, Super Max) was hired in February to rewrite Bill Marsilli’s (Deja Vu) but looks like another one is in the works. The original script sounded terrible.

“A fugitive whaler teams up with a naturalist, a mysterious woman and a captain of a futuristic submarine, to search for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind.”

Randall Wallace (Braveheart, Pearl Harbor, We Were Soldiers, and The Rookie) has been hired to rewrite Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo.

This is meant to be an origin story for the mysterious Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus. McG wants Will Smith as Nemo.

Nothing I have heard about this project fills me with any hope for what should be an amazing adaption of a wonderful piece of work.

By the Power of Grayskull - He-Man gets another rewrite

Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures have signed on Evan Daugherty to write the latest draft of Grayskull, the studio's big-screen version of Mattel's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon and toy line.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) is attached to direct the adaptation of the show, which followed a blond warrior named Prince Adam who, when uttering the magic words, "By the power of Grayskull -- I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who tried week after week to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbued He-Man with his powers.

Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.

That sounds as if Prince Adam could well be from Earth and ends up in Eternia which is basically a reversal of the previous film that starred Dolph Lundgren.

Tom Hanks is space bound as Major Matt Mason

Universal is developing Major Matt Mason, a live-action feature based on the vintage Mattel action figure as a starring vehicle for Tom Hanks. Graham Yost is writing the script.

According to Variety, the toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s.

When Mattel execs Tim Kilpin and Barry Waldo came to Playtone for a meeting, they brought an arsenal of the Matt Mason figures. Hanks came armed with his own.

No production date has been set.

Yost's script credits include "Speed." He and Hanks explored moon matter when Hanks was an executive producer of the HBO mini "From the Earth to the Moon," with Yost serving as supervising producer and writer of two episodes. Yost has also been a writer or producer for Hanks and Goetzman on the Playtone-produced HBO minis "Band of Brothers," "John Adams" and "The Pacific."

Mattel is teamed with Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver on "He-Man and Masters of the Universe," which will be directed by "Kung Fu Panda" co-director John Stevenson, and "Hot Wheels," which moved from Sony.

Universal adds the film project to several toy-based movie projects the studio has percolating with Hasbro, with a "Stretch Armstrong" film being written by Steve Oedekerk, "Monopoly" with Ridley Scott, "Candyland" with "Tropic Thunder" scribe Etan Cohen and director Kevin Lima, and the Platinum Dunes-produced "Ouija."

By the power of Grayskull, He-Man may be getting one step closer to the big screen

Collider mention that Variety is now reporting that the next "He-Man" feature is closer to becoming a reality as Joel Silver has signed "Kung Fu Panda" co-director John Stevenson to helm the project. Warner Brothers, who have held the "He Man" film rights since 2007, will distribute the movie with Silver Pictures listed as a producer and Mattel's Barry Waldo as executive producer.

The self-proclaimed screenwriter of “all things geeky,” Justin Marks stopped by the CBR Boat Show at Comic-Con International in San Diego to talk about his numerous film projects. In this exclusive on-camera interview, Marks discusses with CBR Executive Producer Jonah Weiland the status of “Hack/Slash,” the forthcoming live-action adaptation of Tim Seeley’s hit Devil’s Due horror-comedy series about Cassie Hack, a hero Marks describes as a “motherfucking ass-kicking bitch” with “the heart and soul of a teenage girl.”

Marks, who’s also involved with big-screen versions of Voltron, He-Man and Street Fighter (“my film resume looks like a yard sale in 1991”) also updates fans on “Green Arrow: Escape From Super Max,” which he’s working on with “Batman Begins” co-writer David S. Goyer.

Kevin Smith is developing a $45-$50 million futuristic outer space comedy. “The moment someone steps out of the spaceship, it’s going to cost a little more,” Smith told The Hollywood Reporter. The story will revolve around a father-son relationship, and will reference other science fiction films.
