Romero's new zombie film gets a proper title

Been a while since anything new was heard about George Romero's ...of the Dead film. Now we have a new title - Survival of the Dead - and a slightly updated synopsis.

In a world where the dead rise to menace the living, rogue soldier Crocket (Alan Van Sprang) leads a band of military dropouts to refuge from the endless chaos. As they search for a place "where the shit won’t get you," they meet banished patriarch Patrick O’Flynn (played with zeal by Kenneth Welsh), who promises a new Eden on the fishing and ranching outpost Plum Island. The men arrive, only to find themselves caught in an age-old battle between O’Flynn’s family and rival clan the Muldoons. It turns out that Patrick was expelled from the isle for believing that the only good zombie is a dead zombie, while the Muldoons think it’s wrong to dispatch afflicted loved ones, attempting to look after their undead kinfolk until a cure is found. But their bid for stability on the homestead has turned perverse: the undead are chained inside their homes, pretending to live normal lives – and the consequences are bloody. A desperate struggle for survival will determine whether the living and the dead can coexist.

I do hope that this is better than Diary of the Dead. Romero's touch isn't as good as it once was. Fingers crossed he gets back on track with his new one.

News on Romero's ...of the Dead film. Cowboys v Zombies anyone?

Quiet Earth found the flyers for George A Romero's new zombie film. Looks like it is simply being called ...of the Dead for the moment which may or may not be quite cool.

Fangoria is reporting that this is going to be a "western" zombie flick, and apparently Romero is taking cues from The Big Country where Stetson-wearing cowboys and grizzled farmhands shoot Winchester rifles—aiming, of course, for the head. Also, reportedly only one character from Diary has been tied into this new story. This would be Alan Van Sprang, who reprises his brief role as Nicholas “Nicotine” Crocket, a renegade member of the National Guard, but in this new film he plays a reluctant quas-hero who smokes alot and rallies the people to stop the zombies.

"Romero is fashioning a kind of mini-epic of modern-day zombie mayhem, liberally ladled with large doses of gritty Wild West style and attitude. Set in an island off the east coast of North America, Romero’s script details the conflicts between two warring rural families (à la the Hatfields and the McCoys), engaged in an escalating battle, with the ever-multiplying hordes of flesheaters akin to the kids caught in the middle. “The juxtaposition of the cowboys and the zombies is interesting,” executive producer and longtime Romero collaborator Peter Grunwald tells Fango. “This is a Western set in this made-up George Romero world.”

The plot for Romero's Island full of Zombies movie

We mentioned it a few days ago and now we hear that George Romero’s new zombie movie is currently shooting in Canada. Variety has some news on the plot of the movie.

“Plot involves inhabitants of an isolated island off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the dead to eat their kin. The leaders of the island feud over whether or not to kill their reanimated relatives or preserve them in hopes of finding a cure.”

They also list the people starring in the movie - Alan Van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh, Kathleen Munroe, Devon Bostick, Richard Fitzpatrick, Stefano Colacitti and Athena Karkanis. No big stars there.

Do you think it will end up being called Island of the Dead? What do you think of the plot synopsis? Kind of like the farmer in The Walking Dead comic who keeps his undead relatives in the barn in the misguided hope he can cure them. There will no doubt be a scene in the movie where someone sees their zombie relative and says, "They know me. It's okay," before getting their throat ripped out by dear old Zombie Dad!!
