Red Tails - George Lucas doing something not involving the Force

George Lucas has been developing Red Tails since 1989, and was originally going to direct the movie himself. It was what he put aside to make the Star Wars prequels. I'm sure many of you out there wish he had stuck to doing Red Tails. It may have given him the gumption and time to either bin the whole prequel thing or actually make them more worthwhile.

It has now been officially announced that Anthony Hemingway (The Wire, CSI: NY, ER) has signed on to direct it.

Scripted by John Ridley, Red Tails revolves around the first African Americans to become US military pilots in WWII who overcame institutional racism in the military to form the Tuskegee Airmen, the fliers who become the first African-American fighter pilots in US military history during WWII. They went on to become heavily in-demand, and were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

LucasFilm is financing the project for a reported $30-$35 million. Production will begin early next year in Prague, Italy, Croatia and England.

There was also a 1995 TV movie called The Tuskegee Airmen that starred Laurence Fishbourne. Anyone seen it? Was it any good?
