George A. Romero making a new Romantic Comedy....As if. Zombie Island lives!

The father of the Zombie Movies, George A. Romero, is apparantly hard at work on his next film. This time he will be using mostly...Zombies!

The currently untitled film is in pre-production up in Toronto and should start shooting soon. Apparently this is not a sequel to Diary of the Dead, which was a bit disappointing. Bloody Disgusting state that it is a "quasi-sequel" that will take place on an island. Romero is now on his fifth zombie film and the early details on this sound like it might be at least better than Diary of the Dead.

Romero revealed the following to SchlockAroundTheClock:

“It’ll be about three weeks in [past the outbreak] and it doesn’t start with the people in the mansion [at the end of Diary]. It starts with the blonde who drove away and the national guardsmen who robbed the people. So those are the only characters that return. What it’s about is tribalism. How the internet creates a Hatfields and McCoys situation. It’s on an island, where people have been lured by someone on the net as a safe haven, but really what these guys are trying to do is hold them up at the boat docks.”

Movieset spoke with Nicolas Chartier, the president of Voltage Pictures, who joked that while the film is yet to be officially titled, it is being referred internally as “Something of the Dead."

“We’re shooting underwater zombies,” Chartier revealed. “They’re swimming, grabbing people’s legs, pulling them down. It’s a lot of fun.”

I read somewhere a while ago of a video game that was going to be set on a tropical island resort where zombies attacked. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? What was it called? What do you think of Romero's latest news then? Did you enjoy Diary of the Dead?

  1. I think the game was called "Dead Island" but havent heard much about it other then maybe a paragraph and a little pic in one of the gamer mags months ago. I am and have always been a Romero fan and fan of the genre in general and I absolutely hated Land and Diary both. Land was... well just kind of stupid and the whole internet "we just have to get this story out" narration of Diary was also (in my opinion) just stupid. As cliché as everyone thinks it is I just want to see a survival story involving zombies nothing more nothing less just people trying to stay alive in a zombie apocalypse. I love the idea of "The Dead Set" because the Big Brother thing. You have these people who were picked for the show because they probably dont get along and while they are in the house the world is taken over by the undead. I havent seen [rec] yet and refuse to see the US remake until I see the original, Anyone know when the US can expect a release of the original?

  2. Not sure on the release of [rec]. When I find out I'll let you know. Dead Island sounds about right for the game.
Land I enjoyed but felt it could have been so much better. The idea for Diary was also pretty good but was a wasted opportunity.
I think the Dead Set is one of those films that has developed from a conversation down the pub. I feel it will end up being dreadful unfortunately.
Colin (trailer on the site) has a good twist on the Zombie movie, but I am really waiting for the movie adaption of World War Z. Thought that was a great book and if it is done right it should be a truly amazing film.

  4. Oh yes the World War Z movie, looking very forward to that. Im afraid you may be right about "Dead Set" it will prolly turn out horrible but Im trying to keep my hopes up :) Colin doesnt look too bad and seems really original however too much originality sometimes scares me as is the case with Otto. If you havent heard of this one few trailers and even a clip over on Twitch, I warn however it looks a bit wacko. I just dont know... gay zombie love story was just something I never really planned for nor expected.
